Mustadrak al-Hakim
كتاب معرفة الصحابة رضي الله تعالى عنهم
Book of Knowing the Companions (may Allah be pleased with them)
كَانَ ابْنُ عَبَّاسٍ يُسَمَّى الْبَحْرَ لِكَثْرَةِ عِلْمِهِ .
Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) was called "the Sea" because of the abundance of his knowledge

وأخبرنا أبو عبد الله، حدثنا إسماعيل بن إسحاق، حدثنا ابن نُمَير، حدثنا أبو أسامة، حدثنا الأعمَش، عن مجاهد قال: كان ابن عبّاس يُسمَّى البحرَ لكَثرْة علمه (2).
Mujahid states that Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) used to be called "al-Bahr" (the Ocean of knowledge) because of the abundance of his knowledge.

(2) إسناده صحيح. ابن نمير: هو محمد بن عبد الله بن نمير وأبو أسامة هو حماد بن أسامة.
Grading: Its chain is sahih.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): In the chain, "Ibn Numayr" refers to Muhammad bin 'Abd Allah bin Numayr, and "Abu Usamah" refers to Hammad bin Usamah.
وأخرجه عبد الله بن أحمد في "فضائل الصحابة" (1920) و (1927)، والطبري في مسند ابن عبّاس في "تهذيب الآثار" 1/ 176، وأبو نعيم في "الحلية" 1/ 316، والخطيب البغدادي في "الفقيه والمتفقه" (214) من طرق عن أبي أسامة، بهذا الإسناد.
Reference / Source: 'Abd Allah bin Ahmad narrated it in "Fada'il al-Sahabah" (1920, 1927), al-Tabari in "Tahdhib al-Athar" (1/ 176), Abu Nu'aym in "al-Hilyah" (1/ 316) and al-Khatib al-Baghdadi in "al-Faqih wa-l-Mutafaqqih" (214), through various routes from Abu Usamah, with this same chain.
