Al-Walid bin Abd al-Rahman al-Jurashi narrates from Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) that he passed by Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) while he was narrating from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): "Whoever follows a funeral will have one qirat, and if he also attends its burial he will have two qirats, and one qirat is greater than (the mountain of) Uhud." Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: "O Abu Hurayrah! Be careful what you narrate from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)." So Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) got up and, taking Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) with him, went to Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) and said to her: "O Mother of the Believers! I ask you by Allah: did you hear the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say: 'Whoever follows a funeral and prays the funeral prayer over it will have one qirat, and if he attends its burial he will have two qirats'?" She replied: "By Allah, yes (I heard it)." At this Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "Neither planting (orchards) nor trading in the markets kept us busy away from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) (and from acquiring hadith); rather, I was always seeking from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) a word that he (peace and blessings be upon him) would teach me or a morsel that he (peace and blessings be upon him) would feed me." Then Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: "O Abu Hurayrah! You were the one of us who kept closest company with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and who knew his hadith best."
This hadith has an authentic (sahih) chain of narration, but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it.

(1462). Grading: This hadith is sahih and its narrators are thiqah. Technical note / Defect ('illah): The narration of al-Walid bin 'Abd al-Rahman al-Jurashi from Ibn 'Umar and Abu Hurayrah is "mursal", since according to Ibn Hibban his hearing from any Companion is not established. Reference / Source: Imam Ahmad narrated it in the "Musnad" (8/ 4453) through the route of Hushaym with this same chain. Reference / Source: A similar narration was also reported by Imam Ahmad (14/ 9016) through the route of Hammad bin Salamah from Ya'la bin 'Ata'. Reference / Source: Imam al-Bukhari (1323) and Muslim (945) narrated it in abridged form through the route of Jarir bin Hazim from Nafi', that Ibn 'Umar was told that Abu Hurayrah was saying this (about the reward of the funeral). Reference / Source: Imam Muslim, Abu Dawud (3169) and Ibn Hibban narrated it through the route of 'Amir bin Sa'd, and Imam Ahmad and al-Tirmidhi through the route of Abu Salamah, from Abu Hurayrah and Ibn 'Umar with this same story. Reference / Source: Its final portion was narrated by Imam al-Tirmidhi (3836) through the route of Hushaym, in which Hushaym explicitly states that he heard it from Ya'la bin 'Ata'; al-Tirmidhi declared it "hasan". Reference / Source: The narration of Abu Hurayrah (without the story) is found with sahih chains in many places in the six books and the Musnad of Ahmad. 8/ (4453). Corroborating chains and supporting reports: In this chapter there are supporting reports from several other Companions, which we have mentioned in our verification of "Musnad Ahmad" (8/ 4453). Note / Clarification: "Qirat" means a great and known measure of reward with Allah. Note / Clarification: "Al-ukla" (with a damma) means a single morsel, and "al-akla" (with a fatha) means eating once until full.
