It is narrated from Sayyiduna Jabir bin Abdullah al-Ansari (may Allah be pleased with him) that Sayyiduna Uthman bin Affan (may Allah be pleased with him) sent me with fifty horsemen to Dhu Khushub, and our commander was Sayyiduna Muhammad bin Maslamah al-Ansari (may Allah be pleased with him). The narrator said: A man came with a copy of the Qur'an hanging from his neck and a sword in his hand, while tears were flowing from his eyes, and he said: "This (Qur'an) commands us to fight with this (sword) for the commands that are in this (Qur'an)!" Sayyiduna Muhammad bin Maslamah (may Allah be pleased with him) said to him: "Sit down! We fought with this (sword) to establish the commands in this (Qur'an) before you were even born." He kept on counselling him until the man went back.
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of the two Shaykhs, but they did not record it.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: Its chain is sahih. Technical note / Defect ('illah): Ibn Abi 'Umar is Muhammad bin Yahya bin Abi 'Umar al-'Adani, and Sufyan is Ibn 'Uyaynah. Reference / Source: Sa'id bin Mansur recorded it in his "Sunan" (2935), and Ibn 'Asakir in "Tarikh Dimashq" (39/ 322) by way of Isma'il bin Musa al-Fazari, both of them (Sa'id bin Mansur and Isma'il bin Musa) from Sufyan bin 'Uyaynah, with this chain. Reference / Source: Ibn Sa'd recorded it at greater length than here in his "al-Tabaqat" (3/ 61), and by his way Ibn 'Asakir (39/ 322), from Muhammad bin 'Umar al-Waqidi, from Ibn Jurayj and Dawud bin 'Abd al-Rahman al-'Attar, from 'Amr bin Dinar, with it. Note / Clarification: It contains the explanation that this happened when the Egyptians came from Egypt seeking 'Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him), to reproach him over certain matters. 108. Note / Clarification: "Dhu Khushub" (with dammah on its first and second letters): a valley or place one stage from Madinah on the road to Syria. Its location is perhaps about 35 kilometres away, on the eastern bank of Wadi al-Hamd. See "al-Ma'alim al-Athirah" by Muhammad Muhammad Shurrab (p. 108).
