Ali bin al-Husayn (Zayn al-Abidin) states, regarding the hadith about digging the grave, that he said: "It was Abu Talhah Zayd bin Sahl (may Allah be pleased with him) who used to dig the graves (in Madinah)."

Hadith Takhrij«
Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: This narration is "sahih", and the narrators of this chain are acceptable (la ba'sa bihim), but it is "mursal". Important point: 'Ali bin al-Husayn is "Zayn al-'Abidin 'Ali bin al-Husayn bin 'Ali bin Abi Talib". Note / Clarification: "The hadith of the digging" refers to the narration about digging the blessed grave of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). Reference / Source: It is in "Sirat Ibn Hisham" (2/ 622) via Ibn Ishaq, where he states explicitly that he heard it (sama'), and Ibn Ishaq also mentioned two further chains (al-Zuhri from 'Ali bin al-Husayn, and Husayn bin Abd Allah from 'Ikrimah from Ibn 'Abbas). Reference / Source: This narration is also in Imam Ahmad (1/ 39 and 4/ 2357) with this last chain reaching Ibn 'Abbas. Technical note / Defect ('illah): The narrator Husayn al-Hashimi in it is "weak". Reference / Source: Imam Ahmad (4/ 2661) and Ibn Majah (1628) narrated it via Jarir bin Hazim from Ibn Ishaq, from Ibn 'Abbas. Corroborating chains and supporting reports: A similar narration is also reported with the "mursal" chains of Abu Salamah and Yahya bin Abd al-Rahman bin Hatib in Ibn Sa'd's "Tabaqat" (2/ 257), and its narrators are acceptable (la ba'sa bihim). (2661). Reference / Source: For all its supporting reports, see "Musnad Ahmad" (no. 2661).
