Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 5124

Sayyidah Umm Khalid bint Khalid (may Allah be pleased with her) relates: My uncle Amr bin Sa'id came to us in Abyssinia two years after my father's arrival, and he remained there until he set sail in the ships with the Companions of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). They reached the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) at Khaybar in the year 7 AH. Amr then took part with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) in the Conquest of Makkah, Hunayn, Ta'if and Tabuk. Then, when the armies set out for Syria, he went out with them, and he was martyred at the Battle of Ajnadayn in Jumada al-Ula, 13 AH, during the caliphate of Sayyiduna Abu Bakr al-Siddiq (may Allah be pleased with him). The commander of the people on that day was Amr bin al-As (may Allah be pleased with him).

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Correction of the text: In manuscripts (Z) and (B) (the name) was distorted into "Sufyan"; we have recorded it correctly from manuscripts (S) and (M), and this agrees with Ibn Sa'd's "al-Tabaqat" (4/95), narrated from Muhammad bin 'Umar (al-Waqidi) with this same chain. In Ibn 'Asakir's "Tarikh Dimashq" (46/21) and in "Usd al-Ghabah" (3/727) it appears as "bi-yasir".

Linguistic note: In our manuscripts the word "Hunayn" appears in this way (as a diptote, without tanwin), that is, it is treated as feminine and read as a diptote in the sense of "the battle" (al-waqi'ah). It may also be according to the dialect of Rabi'ah and Ghanm, in which it is accusative in pronunciation but written without the alif of the accusative.

Correction of the text: Manuscripts (Z), ('A) and (B) have the word "al-Yahud" (the Jews); apparently this is a distortion of the word "al-junud" (the troops), since mentioning the Jews here makes no sense. It seems it was the same in manuscript (S) and was then corrected to "al-judud", and it was also the same in manuscript (M) and was then corrected to "al-junud", which is what suits the context. In Ibn Sa'd's "al-Tabaqat al-Kubra" the wording is: "When the Muslims set out".

Variation in the narration: There is disagreement about the time and place of the martyrdom of 'Amr bin Sa'id al-'As; some said he was martyred on the day of "Ajnadayn", some said at "Marj al-Suffar", and some said at "al-Yarmuk". For the details of this disagreement see "Tarikh Dimashq" (46/21-24), although the majority view is that he was killed on the day of Ajnadayn.
