Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 5020M

It is narrated from Imam al-Sha'bi; he said: Whenever the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) sent out a sariyyah (military expedition) and Zayd bin Harithah (may Allah be pleased with him) was among them, he (peace and blessings be upon him) would appoint him, and none other, as their commander.

Hadith Grading
Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: (2) This report is "sahih", and the narrators of this chain are "thiqah".
Technical note / Defect ('illah): However, there is disagreement on Sufyan (Ibn 'Uyaynah) over whether it is mawsul or mursal. Ibn Abi 'Umar (Muhammad bin Yahya), with the author, and Ahmad bin Hanbal in "Fada'il al-Sahabah": (1534) narrated it from Sufyan bin 'Uyaynah > Ibn Abi Khalid > al-Sha'bi as "mursal".
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Al-Humaydi, however, went against them and narrated it in his "Musnad": (269) from Sufyan bin 'Uyaynah > Isma'il bin Abi Khalid > al-Sha'bi > 'A'ishah (may Allah be pleased with her). Thus he made it "mawsul" by mentioning 'A'ishah. But al-Sha'bi's ('Amir bin Sharahil) narration from 'A'ishah is "mursal", as several scholars have explicitly stated. Abu Hatim said that al-Sha'bi heard the hadiths of 'A'ishah through Masruq bin al-Ajda'.
Important point / Research: The confirmation of this has become apparent in this report, as will come with the author under number (5028); there Hamid bin Yahya al-Balkhi (who is a hafiz and thiqah) narrated it from Sufyan bin 'Uyaynah > Isma'il bin Abi Khalid > al-Sha'bi > Masruq > 'A'ishah. Thus the chain became connected. Ibn Hibban said about Hamid bin Yahya that he spent his life in the company of Ibn 'Uyaynah and was the most knowledgeable person of his time regarding his hadith.
