It is narrated from Thabit al-Bunani that Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) was ill, and Muhammad bin al-Hajjaj came with some of his companions to visit him. During the conversation there, Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) was mentioned, and Muhammad bin al-Hajjaj disparaged him. At this Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "Who is this? Sit me up." When he had been sat up, he said: "O Ibn al-Hajjaj! Do I see you speaking disparagingly of Ali bin Abi Talib? By the One who sent Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) with the truth, I used to serve the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) in his presence, and every day a young man from among the sons of the Ansar would attend to serve him (peace and blessings be upon him); that day was my turn. Umm Ayman, the freed slave-woman of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), brought a bird and placed it before him (peace and blessings be upon him). The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: 'O Umm Ayman! What is this bird?' She said that this was a bird she had obtained and prepared for him. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) supplicated: 'O Allah! Send to me the one among Your creation who is most beloved to You and to me, so that he may eat this bird with me.' Meanwhile there was a knock at the door, and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: 'O Anas! See who is at the door.' I prayed (within myself): O Allah! Make him a man from the Ansar. I went, and there was Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him). I said (to put him off) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was occupied with some task, and then I came back and stood in my place. Only a little while had passed when there was another knock, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: 'O Anas! See who is at the door.' Again I wished: O Allah! Make him a man from the Ansar. I went, and again it was Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him). I again said the same, that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was busy, and came back to my place. After a little while there was another knock, and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: 'O Anas! Go and bring him in. You are not the first person to have loved his own people. He is not from the Ansar.' So I went and brought him in, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: 'O Anas! Bring the bird close to him.'" The narrator says: I placed the bird before him (peace and blessings be upon him), and the two of them ate it together. Muhammad bin al-Hajjaj asked (in amazement): "O Anas! Did all this happen in your presence?" He replied: "Yes." So Muhammad bin al-Hajjaj said: "I make a firm covenant with Allah that from today I will never disparage Ali, nor will I hear anyone speak ill of him without answering him sternly."

Hadith Grading
Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Note / Clarification: In manuscripts (Z), (S) and (B) this word is corrupted into "al-Husayn", while it appears correctly in manuscript (M).

Note / Clarification: In the manuscripts this word is corrupted into "'Aliyah".

Grading: Its chain is "very weak".
Technical note / Defect ('illah): This is because of Ibrahim bin Thabit al-Qassar (some gave his father's name as "Bab" instead of Thabit). Al-Dhahabi said about him in "al-Mizan": "He is not reliable, and I do not know his condition well." And in "Talkhis al-Mustadrak" he called him "saqit" (discarded).
Reference / Source: Al-'Uqayli recorded it in "al-Du'afa'" (41) from Musa bin Ishaq al-Ansari, from Abd Allah bin 'Umar bin Aban, with this chain.
Important point: Then (al-'Uqayli) said: "This hadith has no basis as a hadith of Thabit. Mu'alla bin Abd al-Rahman corroborated this shaykh, narrating it from Hammad bin Salamah, from Thabit, from Anas; al-Sa'igh narrated it to us from al-Hasan bin Ali al-Hulwani, from him. But according to them (the hadith scholars) Mu'alla lies, and no trustworthy narrator brought it from Hammad bin Salamah, nor from a trustworthy narrator from Thabit."
General principle: Then he said: "The narrations in this chapter have 'lin' and weakness in them; I do not know anything established in it. And al-Bukhari said the same."
