Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 4682

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) that Sayyiduna Umar bin al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "Ali bin Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him) has been given three qualities such that, if even one of them had been given to me, it would have been dearer to me than a wealth of red camels." It was said: O Commander of the Believers! What are they? He said: "First, his marriage to Sayyidah Fatimah, the daughter of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him); second, his residing in the mosque with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), such that everything that was lawful for him (peace and blessings be upon him) there was lawful for him; and third, his receiving the banner on the day of Khaybar."
This hadith has a sahih (authentic) chain of narration, but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it.

Grading: (2) This hadith is "sahih", Allah willing.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): However, as a "connected" (mawsul) chain it is "da'if". The reason is Abdullah bin Ja'far al-Madini, who is weak in hadith; he was declared weak by his own son Ali (the well-known imam, who narrates this report from him here). In this chain Ya'qub bin Abd al-Rahman al-Zuhri (who is thiqah) contradicted him: he narrated it from Suhayl bin Abi Salih, from his father, that Umar bin al-Khattab said …, so he mentioned it as "mursal", without mention of Abu Hurayrah. Its narrators are thiqah, so what is "preserved" (mahfuz) is that it is mursal.
Reference / Source: Ibn al-Jazari narrated it in "Manaqib al-Asad al-Ghalib" (26) through the route of Abu Bakr al-Bayhaqi, from Abu Abdullah al-Hakim, with his chain.
Reference / Source: Al-Tahawi narrated it in "Sharh Mushkil al-Athar" (3551) through the route of Rawh bin Aslam, and Abu Ya'la al-Mawsili in "al-Musnad al-Kabir" (as in al-Haythami's "al-Maqsad al-Ali" 1329) - and through his route Ibn Asakir in "Tarikh Dimashq" (42/120) - through the route of Ubaydullah bin Umar al-Qawariri. Both of them (Rawh and Ubaydullah) brought it from Abdullah bin Ja'far al-Madini with this same chain.
Reference / Source: Al-Tahawi (3552), and Abu Bakr al-Qati'i in his additions to Ahmad's "Fada'il al-Sahabah" (1123), narrated it through the route of Ya'qub bin Abd al-Rahman al-Zuhri al-Iskandarani, from Suhayl bin Abi Salih, from his father, that Umar bin al-Khattab said …; he mentioned it as "mursal", without mentioning Abu Hurayrah in the chain.
Grading: Its narrators are "thiqah".
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: Something similar is also narrated as a statement of Abdullah bin Umar bin al-Khattab, in Ahmad (volume 8, hadith 4797) and others, through the route of Umar bin Usayd.
Grading: Its chain is "hasan" for supporting reports and corroborating chains.
