Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 4622

Yahya bin Ma'in said: "The name of Abu Talib was Abd Manaf."
Imam al-Hakim said: Ziyad has likewise transmitted it from Muhammad bin Ishaq, whereas there are mass-transmitted reports that Abu Talib's kunyah was in fact his name; and Allah knows best.

Note / Clarification: (2) This narration is in "Tarikh Ibn Ma'in" in the recension of Abbas al-Duri (83).

Note / Clarification: (3) In manuscripts (S) and (B) this was corrupted into "bin", and in manuscripts (Z) and (M) it was written "Ziyad Muhammad bin Ishaq" (with the word "an" (from) between Ziyad and Muhammad dropped). Ziyad is Ibn Abdullah al-Bakka'i, one of the narrators of the Sirah from Ibn Ishaq.

Note / Clarification: (4) The wording of al-Hakim in "Ulum al-Hadith" (page 184) is: "And thus Ahmad bin Hanbal mentioned it from al-Shafi'i, and most of the early scholars hold that his name is his kunyah. And Allah knows best."
