Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Note / Clarification: (1) The word "fa-takallama" (then he spoke) is taken from al-Dhahabi's "Talkhis al-Mustadrak", whereas in manuscripts (Z) and (B) it is corrupted into "fa-ghtamma" (then he grieved), and in manuscripts (S) and (M) the place was left blank.
Grading: (2) This report is sahih, but this chain is da'if.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Bashshar bin Musa al-Khaffaf is disputed and is closer to weakness. Abd al-Rahman bin Muhammad al-Hatibi (who is actually Abd al-Rahman bin Uthman bin Ibrahim bin Muhammad bin Hatib, here attributed to his great-grandfather) was declared weak by Abu Hatim al-Razi, and Ibn Hibban mentioned him in "al-Thiqat"; so the closer view is that he is weak. But the story of Muhammad bin Hatib asking Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) about his view on Uthman is narrated from Muhammad bin Hatib through other routes, and the rest of it has sahih supporting reports.
Reference / Source: Ibn Asakir (39/ 464) narrated the story of Muhammad bin Hatib via the route of Aswad bin Amir, from Abd al-Rahman bin Uthman al-Hatibi, with this same chain.
Reference / Source: It was narrated by Ahmad bin Hanbal in "Fada'il al-Sahabah" (770), al-Ajurri in "al-Shari'ah" (1448, 1826) and Ibn Asakir (39/ 465-466) via the route of Abu Awn Muhammad bin Ubaydullah al-Thaqafi; and by al-Husayn bin Isma'il al-Mahamili in his "Amali" (196) and Ibn Asakir (39/ 467) via the route of Abd al-Malik bin Sufyan al-Thaqafi, both of them from Muhammad bin Hatib. The chain of Abu Awn's narration is sahih.
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: It is supported by the report of Kulayb bin Shihab found in Ibn Abi Shaybah (15/ 248) and Ibn Asakir (39/ 466) via the route of Asim bin Kulayb from his father, and its chain is strong.
Details of the narration: It is narrated from Muhammad bin Hatib that Ali gave a different answer about Uthman, as Ibn Abi al-Dunya narrated in "al-Ishraf fi Manazil al-Ashraf" (293) and Ibn Asakir (39/ 467, 468) via the route of Yusuf bin Sa'd, the mawla of Uthman bin Maz'un, that Muhammad bin Hatib said to him: "Had you been present today, you would have witnessed something amazing. Ali, Ammar, Malik al-Ashtar and Sa'sa'ah bin Suhan gathered in this house (meaning the house of Nafi'). Ammar spoke and mentioned Uthman, and Ali's face began to change. Then Malik spoke in line with Ammar. Then Sa'sa'ah spoke and said: 'O Abu al-Yaqzan, not everything that people claim Uthman did, did he actually do.' Or someone said: 'He was the first who took office and then favoured himself, and the first from whom the Ummah split away.' Then Ali spoke and said: 'By Allah, we are upon the course that Uthman took; he has prior merits after which Allah will never punish him.'" Its chain is sahih.
Important point: There is nothing to prevent Ali from having said both statements on that day at that gathering: one in answer to Muhammad bin Hatib, and the other in answer to the persons mentioned.
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: A supporting report for the conversation of al-Hasan bin Ali with his father is the report of Qays bin Ubad found with Abdullah bin Ahmad (al-Sunnah: 1326, 1397), al-Khallal (748), al-Tabarani (203) and Ibn Asakir (42/ 458), and its chain is sahih.
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: It is also supported by the report of Sulayman bin Surad from al-Hasan bin Ali bin Abi Talib, found through sahih chains from Sulayman bin Surad in Ibn Abi Shaybah (15/ 285, 288), al-Baladhuri in "Ansab al-Ashraf" (3/ 63), Ibn Abi al-Dunya in "al-Mutamannin" (97, 155), al-Harith bin Abi Usamah in his "Musnad" (Bughyat al-Bahith of al-Haythami: 757), al-Daraqutni in "al-Mu'talif wa-l-Mukhtalif" (2/ 861) and al-Khatib al-Baghdadi in "Mudih Awham al-Jam' wa-l-Tafriq" (1/ 103-104). See also what will come at numbers (5696) and (5697).
Note / Clarification: The story of the killing of Muhammad bin Talhah bin Ubaydullah on the day of the Camel is well known; Abu Jamilah Maysarah bin Ya'qub al-Tuhawi (Ali's standard-bearer on the day of the Camel) mentioned it (al-Bukhari: al-Tarikh al-Awsat 295), and the chain is sahih.
Note / Clarification: This story will come again with the author (al-Hakim) at number (5708) via the route of al-Hasan bin Ya'qub al-Adl from Yahya bin Abi Talib.
