Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 4561

Ma'dan bin Abi Talhah al-Ya'mari narrates from Sayyiduna Umar bin al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said on the pulpit: I saw in a dream as if a rooster pecked me three times, and I interpreted (it) as being some non-Arab. And indeed I have entrusted my matter (the choice of the caliphate) to these six people with whom the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was pleased at the time of his death: Uthman, Ali, Talhah, al-Zubayr, Abd al-Rahman bin Awf and Sa'd bin Abi Waqqas. So whichever of them is chosen (as Khalifah), he will be the Khalifah.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: Its chain is sahih.
Note / Clarification: Al-Humaydi is Abd Allah bin al-Zubayr al-Asadi, and Sufyan is Ibn Uyaynah. Ali bin al-Madini declared this hadith sahih, as Ibn Kathir reported from him in "Musnad al-Faruq" (729).
Reference / Source: Ahmad (1/89) recorded it via Hammam bin Yahya al-Awdhi, Ahmad (186) and Muslim (567) via Hisham al-Dastuwa'i, Ahmad (341) and Muslim (567) via Sa'id bin Abi Arubah, and Muslim (567) and Ibn Hibban (2091) via Shu'bah bin al-Hajjaj; all four from Qatadah, with this chain.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Except that Hisham, Ibn Abi Arubah and Shu'bah said in their narrations "I think it can only mean that my appointed time has come" instead of "So I said: A non-Arab". And Hammam added in his narration "a red rooster", and: "I related it to Asma' bint Umays, the wife of Abu Bakr, and she said: A man from the non-Arabs will kill you."
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: Hammam's narration is supported by the narration of Aslam, the freed slave of Umar, with Ibn Abi Shaybah (11/74) and al-Tahawi in "Sharh Mushkil al-Athar" (4956), with a sahih chain.
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: Whereas Muhammad bin Sirin agreed with the other narrators that it was Umar himself who interpreted the dream, with a sahih chain to him, with Umar bin Shabbah in "Tarikh al-Madinah" (3/888) and al-Baladhuri in "Ansab al-Ashraf" (10/412).
Important point: There is nothing to prevent that Umar bin al-Khattab (first) interpreted the dream to himself, and then, wishing to confirm it, related it to Asma' bint Umays, and her interpretation agreed with his.
