Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 4424

It is narrated from Zayd bin Yuthay' that he said: We asked Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him): "With what were you sent during that Hajj?" He said: "I was sent with four things: that none shall enter Paradise except a believer; that no one shall circumambulate the House (the Ka'bah) naked; that after this year a believer and a disbeliever shall not gather together in the Sacred Mosque; and that whoever has a covenant with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), it remains valid until its term, and whoever has no covenant, he has a respite of four months."
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim), but they did not record it.

Explanation & Benefits

Grading: This is a "sahih hadith", and this chain is "hasan", if Allah wills.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Abu Ishaq al-Sabi'i is alone in narrating from the narrator Zayd bin Yuthay' (who is also called Yazid bin Uthay'), but al-Tirmidhi called his hadith hasan and Ibn Hibban called it sahih. Ibn Hibban, al-Ijli, Ibn Khalfun and al-Hafiz Ibn Hajar declared him trustworthy, although there is some leniency in this declaration; but there is corroboration for the meaning of Zayd's hadith, and he is not alone in it.
Note / Clarification: "Sufyan" in the chain is Sufyan bin Uyaynah, and "Abu Ishaq al-Hamdani" is Amr bin Abd Allah al-Sabi'i.
Reference / Source: Ahmad narrated it at 2/ (594) and al-Tirmidhi at (871), (872) and (3092) by way of Sufyan bin Uyaynah, with this same chain.
Grading: Al-Tirmidhi called it "a hasan sahih hadith".
Details of the narration: A similar narration will come later in the author's (al-Hakim's) collection at hadith number (7541) by way of Sufyan al-Thawri, from Abu Ishaq.
Reference / Source: Al-Nasa'i (8407) narrated it by way of Yunus bin Abi Ishaq al-Sabi'i, from his father (Abu Ishaq), but with these words: "The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) sent (Surah) Bara'ah to the people of Makkah with Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him), then sent Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) after him and said: Take the document and go with it to Makkah. Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I caught up with him and took the document, and Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) went back in a state of sadness and said: O Messenger of Allah! Has something been revealed about me? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: No, but I have been commanded that either I myself convey it or a man from my household".
Reference / Source: Ahmad narrated similar words at 1/ (4) by way of Isra'il, from Abu Ishaq, from Zayd bin Yuthay', from Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Isra'il counted it among the "Musnad of Abu Bakr", but al-Daraqutni said in "al-Ilal" (67) that the version of Sufyan bin Uyaynah (who made it part of the Musnad of Ali) is closer to being correct.
Important point: It appears that Zayd bin Yuthay' narrated both wordings (that of Ibn Uyaynah and that of Isra'il and Yunus), and both are "preserved" as part of the Musnad of Ali bin Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him). However, Isra'il mistakenly placed it in the "Musnad of Abu Bakr".
General principle: The fact is that Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) was sent both with Surah Bara'ah and to proclaim those particular words.
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: The proof that both of these (Bara'ah and the proclamation) are preserved is the hadith in al-Bukhari's "Sahih" (4655), in which Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) relates that Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) sent him on the Day of Sacrifice among those making the proclamation: "After this year no polytheist shall perform Hajj, and no one shall circumambulate (the House) naked". Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) sent Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) after them to proclaim Surah Bara'ah.
Reference / Source: A similar narration has already passed in the author's (al-Hakim's) collection at hadith (3314) from Muharrar bin Abi Hurayrah, from Abu Hurayrah, with a "hasan chain", in which Surah Bara'ah and all four of those statements are mentioned together, which proves that Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) proclaimed both of these matters.
Details of the narration: The hadith of Abd Allah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both), which passed in the author's collection before this, also points to this, because at the beginning of the words that Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) proclaimed, he explicitly mentioned some verses of Surah Bara'ah (al-Tawbah).
Important point: Indeed, a narration of Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) through another chain will soon come in the author's collection (number: 4702), mentioning the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) sending Ali with Surah Bara'ah, and also reporting his (peace and blessings be upon him) saying: "No one shall take it except a man who is from me and I am from him".
Grading: The chain of this narration is strong. Thus the Prophet's (peace and blessings be upon him) sending of Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) with Surah Bara'ah and those four statements is confirmed. And Allah knows best.
