It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: "Wherever the words 'O you who believe!' were revealed, they were revealed in Madinah (after the Hijrah), and wherever the words 'O mankind!' occur, they were revealed in Makkah (before the Hijrah)."

Hadith Takhrij «
Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: (3) There is no harm in its narrators (la ba'sa bihim).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): But the correct view is that it is narrated from Alqamah (Ibn Qays al-Nakha'i) as his own "statement" (mawquf on him), as al-Daraqutni said in "al-Ilal" (800), because the hafiz students of al-A'mash, narrating it from him, did not mention "Abd Allah bin Mas'ud" in it.
Reference / Source: Al-Bayhaqi narrated it in "Dala'il al-Nubuwwah" (4/144) from Abu Abd Allah al-Hakim, with this same chain.
Reference / Source: Abu Bakr bin Abi Khaythamah narrated it in "al-Tarikh al-Kabir" (third volume, 1353) from Yahya bin Ma'in, with this same chain.
Reference / Source: Al-Bazzar (1531) narrated it through the route of Qays bin al-Rabi' from al-A'mash.
Reference / Source: Ibn Abi Shaybah (10/522) narrated it from Waki' bin al-Jarrah; and Abu Nu'aym al-Asbahani in "Akhbar Asbahan" (1/204) and al-Wahidi in "Asbab al-Nuzul" (27) through the route of Shu'bah bin al-Hajjaj from Sufyan al-Thawri. Both of them narrate it from al-A'mash, from Ibrahim, from Alqamah, as his own "statement".
Technical note: Waki's hearing from al-A'mash is well known, and Shu'bah also narrated it directly from al-A'mash, as al-Daraqutni pointed out in "al-Ilal".
Note / Repetition and clarification: (Part of the previous text is repeated.) Also, Abu Ubayd narrated it in "Fada'il al-Qur'an" (p. 367) and Ibn al-Durays in "Fada'il al-Qur'an" (26) through the route of Abu Mu'awiyah Muhammad bin Khazim. Abu Ubayd said in his narration: "Someone who heard al-A'mash narrated to us"; and Ibn al-Durays said: "from his companions, from al-A'mash, from Ibrahim, from Alqamah, as his own statement".
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Abu Mu'awiyah narrated it from al-A'mash through the intermediary of others, even though his direct narration from al-A'mash is well known. Likewise, Yahya bin Abd al-Hamid al-Himmani narrated it from Abu Mu'awiyah from al-A'mash (without an intermediary) (see Tafsir Ibn al-Mundhir 1301). But the statement of those other than al-Himmani is more correct, since al-Himmani is not that strong.
