Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): This (portion) is "mawsul" (connected) with the chain before it.
Grading: Its chain is "qawi" (strong) because of (the narrator) 'Abdullah bin 'Uthman bin Khuthaym.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): It has also been narrated "marfu'" (as a saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)) by way of Hammad bin Salamah, from 'Ata' bin al-Sa'ib, from Sa'id bin Jubayr, from Ibn 'Abbas. Hammad bin Salamah is among those who heard from 'Ata' bin al-Sa'ib both before his "ikhtilat" (confusion of memory) and after it as well. However, the opposite of it has also been narrated from Ibn 'Abbas through several routes, as we presented under no. (4078).
Reference / Source: Al-Tha'labi narrated it in his "Tafsir" 8/ 150 by way of Yusuf bin 'Abdullah bin Mahan, who narrates it from Musa bin Isma'il alone, with this chain.
Reference / Source: Al-Tabari narrated it in his "Tafsir" 6/ 196 and in his "Tarikh" 1/ 139 by way of Ibn Jurayj, from 'Abdullah bin 'Uthman bin Khuthaym, likewise.
Note / Clarification: This narration will come later under no. (4092) by way of Dawud al-'Attar, who narrates it from 'Abdullah bin 'Uthman bin Khuthaym.
Reference / Source: Imam Ahmad narrated it in 5/ (2794) from Yunus bin Muhammad al-Mu'addib, from Hammad bin Salamah, from 'Ata' bin al-Sa'ib, from Sa'id bin Jubayr, from Ibn 'Abbas, "marfu'".
Details of the narration: It contains the story of Ibrahim (peace be upon him) pelting Satan with pebbles: whenever Satan appeared before him at each of the three "Jamarat", he would pelt him with seven pebbles.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): In this narration, Yunus bin Muhammad was contradicted by (the narrator) Surayj bin al-Nu'man, who narrated it from Hammad bin Salamah, from 'Ata', from Sa'id bin Jubayr, from Ibn 'Abbas, "mawquf" (as the Companion's own statement). This is in al-Tabarani (12292) and in al-Diya' al-Maqdisi's "al-Mukhtarah" 10/ (298).
Preferred view: This (mawquf narration) is "ashbah" (more likely correct) than Yunus's (marfu') narration. It is supported by this narration of Ibn Khuthaym (given above), and likewise by the narration of 'Ikrimah from Ibn 'Abbas that precedes it.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Hammad bin Salamah narrated the story of Ibrahim (peace be upon him) pelting the pebbles, in Ahmad 4/ (2707), from Abu 'Asim al-Ghanawi, from Abu al-Tufayl 'Amir bin Wathilah, from Ibn 'Abbas, "mawquf", mentioning "Isma'il" (peace be upon him) instead of Ishaq.
Conclusion / Ruling: This contains what weakens this narration of 'Ata' bin al-Sa'ib (the one mentioning Ishaq) overall. It appears that this (narration of 'Ata') is among what Hammad bin Salamah took from him (from 'Ata') in the state of his "taghayyur" (deterioration of memory). And Allah the Exalted knows best.
