Musnad of Abdullah ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him)
Hadith 4026
(حديث مرفوع) حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو كَامِلٍ ، حَدَّثَنَا شَرِيكٌ ، عَنِ الرُّكَيْنِ ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ رَفَعَهُ لَنَا فِي أَوَّلِ مَرَّةٍ ، ثُمَّ أَمْسَكَ عَنْهُ ، يَعْنِي شَرِيكٌ ، قَالَ : " الرِّبَا ، وَإِنْ كَثُرَ ، فَإِنَّ عَاقِبَتَهُ إِلَى قُلٍّ " .
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "No matter how much usury increases, its end is always towards decrease."
Hadith 4027
(حديث مرفوع) حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو كَامِلٍ ، وَيَزِيدُ ، أَخْبَرَنَا الْمَسْعُودِيُّ ، عَنِ الْحَسَنِ بْنِ سَعْدٍ ، عَنْ عَبْدَةَ النَّهْدِيِّ ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ مَسْعُودٍ ، قَالَ : قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " إِنَّ اللَّهَ لَمْ يُحَرِّمْ حُرْمَةً ، إِلَّا وَقَدْ عَلِمَ أَنَّهُ سَيَطَّلِعُهَا مِنْكُمْ مُطَّلِعٌ ، أَلَا وَإِنِّي مُمْسِكٌ بِحُجَزِكُمْ أَنْ تَهَافَتُوا فِي النَّارِ كَتَهَافُتِ الْفَرَاشِ وَالذُّبَابِ " ، قَالَ يَزِيدُ : " الْفَرَاشِ أَوْ الذُّبَابِ " .
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Allah knows that whatever He has declared unlawful, there will be those among you who will look at it with curiosity. Beware! I am holding you back by your waist to save you from falling into the fire of Hell, and you are falling into it like moths or flies."
Hadith 4028
حَدَّثَنَا رَوْحٌ ، حَدَّثَنَا الْمَسْعُودِيُّ ، قَالَ : أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو الْمُغِيرَةِ ، عَنِ الْحَسَنِ بْنِ سَعْدٍ ، عَنْ عَبْدَةَ النَّهْدِيِّ ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ مَسْعُودٍ ، فَذَكَرَ الْحَدِيثَ ، وَقَالَ : الْفَرَاشِ وَالذُّبَابِ " .
The previous hadith is also narrated through this second chain of transmission.
Hadith 4029
(حديث مرفوع) حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو كَامِلٍ ، حَدَّثَنَا حَمَّادٌ ، عَنْ عَاصِمِ بْنِ بَهْدَلَةَ ، عَنْ زِرِّ بْنِ حُبَيْشٍ ، عَنِ ابْنِ مَسْعُودٍ ؛ أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، كَانَ زَمِيلَهُ يَوْمَ بَدْرٍ عَلِيٌّ ، وَأَبُو لُبَابَةَ ، فَإِذَا حَانَتْ عُقْبَةُ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، قَالَا : ارْكَبْ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ، حَتَّى نَمْشِيَ عَنْكَ ، فَيَقُولُ : " مَا أَنْتُمَا بِأَقْوَى مِنِّي ، وَلَا أَنَا بِأَغْنَى عَنِ الْأَجْرِ مِنْكُمَا " .
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) that on the day of the Battle of Badr, we were three men riding on one camel each. In this way, Sayyiduna Abu Lubabah (may Allah be pleased with him) and Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) were companions of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). When it was the Prophet’s (peace and blessings be upon him) turn to walk on foot, both of them said, "We will walk in your place (you remain riding)." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "You two are not stronger than me, nor am I in less need of reward than you."
Hadith 4030
(حديث مرفوع) حَدَّثَنَا ابْنُ فُضَيْلٍ ، حَدَّثَنَا هَارُونُ بْنُ عَنْتَرَة ، عَنْ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ الْأَسْوَدِ ، قَالَ : اسْتَأْذَنَ عَلْقَمَةُ ، وَالْأَسْوَدُ عَلَى عبد الله قَالَ : إِنَّهُ سَيَلِيكُمْ أُمَرَاءُ يَشْتَغِلُونَ عَنْ وَقْتِ الصَّلَاةِ ، فَصَلُّوهَا لِوَقْتِهَا ، ثُمَّ قَامَ " فَصَلَّى بَيْنِي وَبَيْنَهُ " ، ثُمّ قَالَ : هَكَذَا رَأَيْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ " .
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) that soon the reins of government will fall into the hands of some people who will delay the prayer from its appointed time, but you should perform the prayer at its proper time. Then he stood up and began to pray in between, and said: I have seen the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) doing likewise.
Hadith 4031
(حديث مرفوع) حَدَّثَنَا ابْنُ نُمَيْرٍ ، حَدَّثَنَا الْأَعْمَشُ ، عَنْ إِبْرَاهِيمَ ، عَنْ عَلْقَمَةَ ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ، قَالَ : لَمَّا نَزَلَتْ هَذِهِ الْآيَةُ : الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا وَلَمْ يَلْبِسُوا إِيمَانَهُمْ بِظُلْمٍ سورة الأنعام آية 82 ، قَالُوا : يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ، فَأَيُّنَا لَا يَظْلِمُ نَفْسَهُ ؟ قَالَ : لَيْسَ ذَاكَ ، " هُوَ الشِّرْكَ ، أَلَمْ تَسْمَعُوا مَا قَالَ لُقْمَانُ لِابْنِهِ : لا تُشْرِكْ بِاللَّهِ إِنَّ الشِّرْكَ لَظُلْمٌ عَظِيمٌ سورة لقمان آية 13 " .
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) that when this blessed verse was revealed: «﴿الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا وَلَمْ يَلْبِسُوا إِيمَانَهُمْ بِظُلْمٍ . . . . .﴾» [الأنعام : 82] "Those who believe and do not mix their belief with injustice..." this was very hard on the people and they said: O Messenger of Allah! Who among us has not wronged himself? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "It does not mean what you think it means. Have you not heard what the righteous servant (Luqman, peace be upon him) said to his son: 'My dear son! Do not associate anyone with Allah, for indeed associating partners with Allah is a great injustice.' In this verse, what is meant is only shirk (associating partners with Allah)."
Hadith 4032
(حديث مرفوع) حَدَّثَنَا ابْنُ نُمَيْرٍ ، عَنِ الْأَعْمَشِ ، عَنْ إِبْرَاهِيمَ ، عَنْ عَلْقَمَةَ ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ، قَالَ : صَلَّى بِنَا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، فَإِمَّا زَادَ وَإِمَّا نَقَصَ قَالَ إِبْرَاهِيمُ : وَإِمَّا جَاءَ نِسْيَانُ ذَلِكَ مِنْ قِبَلِي ، فَقُلْنَا : يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ، أَحَدَثَ فِي الصَّلَاةِ شَيْءٌ ؟ قَالَ : " وَمَا ذَاكَ ؟ " قُلْنَا : صَلَّيْتَ قَبْلُ كَذَا وَكَذَا ، قَالَ : " إِنَّمَا أَنَا بَشَرٌ ، أَنْسَى كَمَا تَنْسَوْنَ ، فَإِذَا نَسِيَ أَحَدُكُمْ فَلْيَسْجُدْ سَجْدَتَيْنِ " ، ثُمَّ تَحَوَّلَ فَسَجَدَ سَجْدَتَيْنِ .
Sayyiduna Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that once the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) led a prayer. I do not remember whether there was some deficiency or excess in it. In any case, when he finished with salam, someone asked: "O Messenger of Allah! Has a new command regarding the prayer been revealed?" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "No, what happened?" The companions (may Allah be pleased with them) said: "You led the prayer in such and such a manner." Upon hearing this, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) folded his legs and performed two prostrations of forgetfulness (sahw). Then, when he finished with salam, he said: "I am also a human being; just as you forget, I too can forget. So, if any of you ever has doubt in his prayer, he should carefully consider and act upon what he thinks is correct, and after finishing with salam, perform two prostrations of forgetfulness."
Hadith 4033
(حديث موقوف) حَدَّثَنَا حَدَّثَنَا ابْنُ نُمَيْرٍ ، وَيَعْلَى ، عَنِ الْأَعْمَشِ ، عَنْ إِبْرَاهِيمَ ، عَنْ عَلْقَمَةَ ، قَالَ : أَتَى عَبْدُ اللَّهِ الشَّامَ ، فَقَالَ لَهُ نَاسٌ مِنْ أَهْلِ حِمْصَ : اقْرَأْ عَلَيْنَا ، فَقَرَأَ عَلَيْهِمْ سُورَةَ يُوسُفَ ، فَقَالَ رَجُلٌ مِنَ الْقَوْمِ : وَاللَّهِ مَا هَكَذَا أُنْزِلَتْ ! فَقَالَ عَبْدُ اللَّهِ وَيْحَكَ ! ! وَاللَّهِ لَقَدْ " قَرَأْتُهَا عَلَى رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ هَكَذَا " ، فَقَالَ : " أَحْسَنْتَ " ، فَبَيْنَا هُوَ يُرَاجِعُهُ ، إِذْ وَجَدَ مِنْهُ رِيحَ الْخَمْرِ ، فَقَالَ : أَتَشْرَبُ الرِّجْسَ ، وَتُكَذِّبُ بِالْقُرْآنِ ؟ وَاللَّهِ لَا تُزَاوِلُنِي حَتَّى أَجْلِدَكَ ، فَجَلَدَهُ الْحَدَّ " .
Alqamah narrates that once Sayyiduna Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) came in the evening and, at the request of some people of Homs, recited Surah Yusuf before them. A man said, "By Allah! This Surah was not revealed in this way." Sayyiduna Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) said, "Alas! By Allah, I recited this Surah in this very way before the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) praised me." Meanwhile, he went near that man and smelled alcohol from his mouth. He said, "You deny the truth and also drink alcohol? By Allah! I will not leave you without carrying out the prescribed punishment upon you." Thus, he carried out the punishment on him.
Hadith 4034
(حديث مرفوع) حَدَّثَنَا ابْنُ نُمَيْرٍ ، أَخْبَرَنَا الْأَعْمَشُ ، عَنْ إِبْرَاهِيمَ ، عَنْ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ يَزِيدَ ، قَالَ : قَالَ عَبْدُ اللَّهِ لَمَّا رَأَى عُثْمَانَ صَلَّى بِمِنًى أَرْبَعَ رَكَعَاتٍ : " صَلَّيْتُ خَلْفَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ رَكْعَتَيْنِ " ، وَخَلْفَ أَبِي بَكْرٍ رَكْعَتَيْنِ ، وخلف عُمَرَ رَكْعَتَيْنِ ، لَيْتَ حَظِّي مِنْ أَرْبَعٍ رَكْعَتَانِ مُتَقَبَّلَتَانِ .
Abdur Rahman bin Yazid says that when Sayyiduna Uthman Ghani (may Allah be pleased with him) performed four rak'ahs in the plain of Mina, Sayyiduna Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I have performed two rak'ahs in Mina with the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), as well as with Sayyiduna Abu Bakr and Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both). I wish that instead of these four rak'ahs, I would have a share in just two accepted rak'ahs.
Hadith 4035
(حديث مرفوع) حَدَّثَنَا ابْنُ نُمَيْرٍ ، أَخْبَرَنَا الْأَعْمَشُ ، عَنْ عُمَارَةَ بْنِ عُمَيْرٍ ، عَنْ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ يَزِيدَ ، قَالَ : قَالَ : دَخَلْنَا عَلَى عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ، وَعِنْدَهُ عَلْقَمَةُ ، وَالْأَسْوَدُ ، فَحَدَّثَ حَدِيثًا لَا أُرَاهُ حَدَّثَهُ إِلَّا مِنْ أَجْلِي ، كُنْتُ أَحْدَثَ الْقَوْمِ سِنًّا ، قَالَ : كُنَّا مَعَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ شَبَابٌ لَا نَجِدُ شَيْئًا ، فَقَالَ : " يَا مَعْشَرَ الشَّبَابِ ، مَنْ اسْتَطَاعَ مِنْكُمْ الْبَاءَةَ فَلْيَتَزَوَّجْ ، فَإِنَّهُ أَغَضُّ لِلْبَصَرِ ، وَأَحْصَنُ لِلْفَرْجِ ، وَمَنْ لَمْ يَسْتَطِعْ ، فَعَلَيْهِ بِالصَّوْمِ ، فَإِنَّهُ لَهُ وِجَاءٌ " .
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) that we young men were once with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and we had nothing with us. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to us: "O group of young men! Whoever among you has the ability to marry, he should get married, for marriage lowers the gaze and protects the private parts. And whoever is not able to marry should observe fasting, for fasting diminishes sexual desire."
Hadith 4036
(حديث قدسي) حَدَّثَنَا يَعْلَى ، حَدَّثَنَا عُمَرُ بْنُ ذَرٍّ ، عَنِ الْعَيْزَارِ ، مِنْ تِنْعَةَ أَنَّ ابْنَ مَسْعُودٍ ، قَالَ : سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَقُولُ : " إِذَا وُجِّهَتْ اللَّعْنَةُ ، تَوَجَّهَتْ إِلَى مَنْ وُجِّهَتْ إِلَيْهِ ، فَإِنْ وَجَدَتْ فِيهِ مَسْلَكًا ، وَوَجَدَتْ سَبِيلًا ، أحَلَّتْ بِهِ ، وَإِلَّا جَاءَتْ إِلَى رَبِّهَا ، فَقَالَتْ : يَا رَبِّ ، إِنَّ فُلَانًا وَجَّهَنِي إِلَى فُلَانٍ ، وَإِنِّي لَمْ أَجِدْ عَلَيْهِ سَبِيلًا ، وَلَمْ أَجِدْ فِيهِ مَسْلَكًا ، فَمَا تَأْمُرُنِي ؟ فَقَالَ : ارْجِعِي مِنْ حَيْثُ جِئْتِ " .
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Mas’ud (may Allah be pleased with him) that I heard the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) say: “When a curse is sent upon someone, the curse heads towards him. If it finds a way to reach him, it falls upon him. Otherwise, it presents itself before Allah and says: ‘O Lord! I was directed towards such-and-such person, but I did not find a way to reach him. What should I do now?’ It is then told: ‘Go back to where you came from.’”
Hadith 4037
(حديث مرفوع) حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو مُعَاوِيَةَ ، حَدَّثَنَا الْأَعْمَشُ ، عَنْ ذَرٍّ ، عَنْ وَائِلِ بْنِ مَهَانَةَ ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ، قَالَ : قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " يَا مَعْشَرَ النِّسَاءِ ، تَصَدَّقْنَ ، وَلَوْ مِنْ حُلِيِّكُنَّ ، فَإِنَّكُنَّ أَكْثَرُ أَهْلِ جَهَنَّمَ يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ " . قَالَ : فَقَامَتْ امْرَأَةٌ لَيْسَتْ مِنْ عِلْيَةِ النِّسَاءِ ، فَقَالَتْ : بِمَ نَحْنُ أَكْثَرُ أَهْلِ جَهَنَّمَ يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ ؟ قَالَ : فَقَالَ : " إِنَّكُنَّ تُكْثِرْنَ اللَّعْنَ ، وَتَكْفُرْنَ الْعَشِيرَ " .
Sayyiduna Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O group of women! Give charity, even if it is from your jewelry, because you are the majority in Hell." A woman—who was not among the tall women—stood up and said: O Messenger of Allah! What is the reason for this? He said: "The reason is that you curse a lot and are very ungrateful and disobedient to your husbands."
Hadith 4038
(حديث مرفوع) حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو مُعَاوِيَةَ ، حَدَّثَنَا الْأَعْمَشُ ، عَنْ شَقِيقٍ ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ، قَالَ : قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ كلمةً ، وقُلتُ أُخرى قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " مَنْ مَاتَ لَا يُشْرِكُ بِاللَّهِ شَيْئًا ، دَخَلَ الْجَنَّةَ " . (حديث موقوف) (حديث موقوف) قَالَ : وَقُلْتُ : " مَنْ مَاتَ يُشْرِكُ بِاللَّهِ شَيْئًا ، دَخَلَ النَّارَ " .
Sayyiduna Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "Whoever dies in such a state that he does not associate anything with Allah, will enter Paradise." And I say that whoever dies in such a state that he associates anything with Allah, will enter Hell.
Hadith 4039
(حديث مرفوع) حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو مُعَاوِيَةَ ، حَدَّثَنَا الْأَعْمَشُ ، عَنْ شَقِيقٍ ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ، قَالَ : قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " إِذَا كُنْتُمْ ثَلَاثَةً ، فَلَا يَتَنَاجَى اثْنَانِ دُونَ صَاحِبِهِمَا ، فَإِنَّ ذَلِكَ يُحْزِنُهُ " .
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "When you are three people, then two of you should not whisper to each other excluding the third, because this will cause grief to the third."

Hadith 4041
(حديث مرفوع) حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو مُعَاوِيَةَ ، وَابْنُ نُمَيْرِ ، قَالَا : حَدَّثَنَا الْأَعْمَشُ ، عَنْ شَقِيقٍ ، قَالَ : كُنَّا جُلُوسًا عِنْدَ بَابِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ، نَنْتَظِرُهُ يَأْذَنُ لَنَا ، قَالَ : فَجَاءَ يَزِيدُ بْنُ مُعَاوِيَةَ النَّخَعِيُّ ، فَدَخَلَ عَلَيْهِ ، فَقُلْنَا لَهُ : أَعْلِمْهُ بِمَكَانِنَا ، فَدَخَلَ فَأَعْلَمَهُ ، فَلَمْ يَلْبَثْ أَنْ خَرَجَ إِلَيْنَا ، فَقَالَ : إِنِّي لَأَعْلَمُ مَكَانَكُمْ ، فَأَدَعُكُمْ عَلَى عَمْدٍ ، مَخَافَةَ أَنْ أُمِلَّكُمْ ، إِنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ كَانَ " يَتَخَوَّلُنَا بِالْمَوْعِظَةِ فِي الْأَيَّامِ ، مَخَافَةَ السَّآمَةِ عَلَيْنَا " .
Shaqiq says that one day we were waiting at the door of Abdullah for the arrival of Sayyiduna Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him). Meanwhile, Yazid bin Mu'awiyah Nakha'i came. When he was about to go inside, we said to him, "Please inform him about us." So he went inside and informed Sayyiduna Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him). He immediately came out and, standing among us, said, "I have been informed that you are waiting for me. The only reason I have not come to you is that I do not like to make you weary. And the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) would also leave some days empty in admonition and advice for the same reason, as he did not like us to become weary."
Hadith 4042
(حديث مرفوع) حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو مُعَاوِيَةَ ، حَدَّثَنَا الْأَعْمَشُ ، عَنْ شَقِيقٍ ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ، قَالَ : قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " أَنَا فَرَطُكُمْ عَلَى الْحَوْضِ ، وَلَأُنَازَعَنَّ أَقْوَامًا ، ثُمَّ لَأُغْلَبَنَّ عَلَيْهِمْ ، فَأَقُولُ : يَا رَبِّ أَصْحَابِي ، فَيُقَالُ : إِنَّكَ لَا تَدْرِي مَا أَحْدَثُوا بَعْدَكَ " .
Sayyiduna Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "I will wait for you at the Hawd (Pond) of Kawthar. At that time, there will be a dispute before me regarding some people and I will be overpowered. I will say: My Lord! (They are) my companions? It will be said: 'You do not know what innovations they introduced after you.'"

(حديث مرفوع) حَدَّثَنَا ابْنُ نُمَيْرٍ ، حَدَّثَنَا الْأَعْمَشُ ، عَنْ شَقِيقٍ ، قَالَ : سَمِعْتُ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ، قَالَ : قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ كَلِمَةً ، وَقُلْتُ أُخْرَى ، سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، يَقُولُ : " مَنْ مَاتَ وَهُوَ يُشْرِكُ بِاللَّهِ شَيْئًا ، دَخَلَ النَّارَ " . (حديث موقوف) (حديث موقوف) وَقُلْتُ أَنَا : " مَنْ مَاتَ وَهُوَ لَا يُشْرِكُ بِاللَّهِ شَيْئًا ، دَخَلَ الْجَنَّةَ " ، وَوَافَقَهُ أَبُو بَكْرٍ ، عَنْ عَاصِمٍ ، خِلَافَ أَبِي مُعَاوِيَةَ ، حَدَّثَنَاهُ أَسْوَدُ .
Sayyiduna Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) says that there are two statements: one I heard from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and the other I say from myself. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Whoever dies in a state while associating partners with Allah, will enter Hell." And I say: Whoever dies in a state while not associating anyone with Allah, will enter Paradise.
Hadith 4044
(حديث مرفوع) حَدَّثَنَا ابْنُ نُمَيْرٍ ، حَدَّثَنَا الْأَعْمَشُ ، عَنْ شَقِيقٍ ، قَالَ : قَالَ عَبْدُ اللَّهِ : قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " مَا أَحَدٌ أَغْيَرَ مِنَ اللَّهِ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ ، وَلِذَلِكَ حَرَّمَ الْفَوَاحِشَ ، وَمَا أَحَدٌ أَحَبَّ إِلَيْهِ الْمَدْحُ مِنَ اللَّهِ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ " .
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "No one is more possessive than Allah, and that is why He has forbidden indecent acts, both outward and inward. And no one loves to be praised more than Allah."
Hadith 4045
(حديث مرفوع) حَدَّثَنَا ابْنُ نُمَيْرٍ ، حَدَّثَنَا الْأَعْمَشُ ، عَنْ إِبْرَاهِيمَ ، عَنِ الْأَسْوَدِ ، قَالَ : دَخَلْتُ أَنَا وَعَلْقَمَةُ عَلَى عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ مَسْعُودٍ ، فَقَالَ : " إِذَا رَكَعَ أَحَدُكُمْ ، فَلْيُفْرِشْ ذِرَاعَيْهِ فَخِذَيْهِ ، فَكَأَنِّي أَنْظُرُ إِلَى اخْتِلَافِ أَصَابِعِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فِي الصَّلَاةِ " .
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) that when any one of you performs ruku', he should spread his arms over his thighs and join his two palms together. It is as if I can still see the Prophet's (peace and blessings be upon him) fingers spread apart. Saying this, he demonstrated by joining his two palms together in the position of ruku'. (This ruling has been abrogated.)
Hadith 4046
(حديث مرفوع) حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو مُعَاوِيَةَ ، وابن نمير ، قَالَا : حَدَّثَنَا الْأَعْمَشُ ، عَنْ عُمَارَةَ ، عَنْ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ يَزِيدَ ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ، قَالَ : مَا رَأَيْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ صَلَّى صَلَاةً قَطُّ إِلَّا لِمِيقَاتِهَا ، إِلَّا صَلَاتَيْنِ : صَلَاةَ الْمَغْرِبِ ، وَصَلَاةَ الْعِشَاءِ بِجَمْعٍ ، وَصَلَّى الْفَجْرَ ، يَوْمَئِذٍ قَبْلَ مِيقَاتِهَا ، وقَالَ ابْنُ نُمَيْرٍ : الْعِشَاءَيْنِ ، فَإِنَّهُ صَلَّاهُمَا بِجَمْعٍ جَمِيعًا " .
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) that I never saw the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) performing a prayer at an improper time, except at Muzdalifah, where I saw him combining Maghrib and 'Isha, and on that day, performing Fajr earlier or later than its time.
Hadith 4047
(حديث مرفوع) حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو مُعَاوِيَةَ ، حَدَّثَنَا الْأَعْمَشُ ، عَنْ عُمَارَةَ ، عَنْ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ يَزِيدَ ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ، قَالَ : كُنْتُ مُسْتَتِرًا بِأَسْتَارِ الْكَعْبَةِ ، قَالَ : فَجَاءَ ثَلَاثَةُ نَفَرٍ ، كَثِيرٌ شَحْمُ بُطُونِهِمْ ، قَلِيلٌ فِقْهُ قُلُوبِهِمْ ، قُرَشِيٌّ ، وَخَتَنَاهُ ثَقَفِيَّانِ ، أَوْ ثَقَفِيٌّ وَخَتَنَاهُ قُرَشِيَّانِ ، فَتَكَلَّمُوا بِكَلَامٍ لَمْ أَفْهَمْهُ ، فَقَالَ بَعْضُهُمْ : أَتَرَوْنَ أَنَّ اللَّهَ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ يَسْمَعُ كَلَامَنَا هَذَا ؟ ! فَقَالَ الْآخَرَانِ : إِنَّا إِذَا رَفَعْنَا أَصْوَاتَنَا سَمِعَهُ ، وَإِذَا لَمْ نَرْفَعْ أَصْوَاتَنَا لَمْ يَسْمَعْهُ ، قَالَ : وَقَالَ الْآخَرُ : إِنْ سَمِعَ مِنْهُ شَيْئًا ، سَمِعَهُ كُلَّهُ ، قَالَ : فَذَكَرْتُ ذَلِكَ لِلنَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، قَالَ : فَأَنْزَلَ اللَّهُ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ : وَمَا كُنْتُمْ تَسْتَتِرُونَ أَنْ يَشْهَدَ عَلَيْكُمْ سَمْعُكُمْ وَلا أَبْصَارُكُمْ إِلَى قَوْلِهِ وَذَلِكُمْ ظَنُّكُمُ الَّذِي ظَنَنْتُمْ بِرَبِّكُمْ أَرْدَاكُمْ فَأَصْبَحْتُمْ مِنَ الْخَاسِرِينَ سورة فصلت آية 22 - 23 " .
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) that once I was clinging to the covering of the Ka'bah when three men came. One of them was a Qurayshi and two were from the tribe of Thaqif who were his sons-in-law, or one was from Thaqif and two were Qurayshi. They had much fat on their bellies but very little understanding in their hearts. They began to speak quietly among themselves, which I could not hear. Then one of them said: "What do you think, does Allah hear our conversations?" The second said: "I think that when we speak loudly, He hears us, but when we do not raise our voices, He does not hear us." The third said: "If He can hear something, then He can hear everything." I mentioned this to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), so Allah revealed this verse: « ﴿وَمَا كُنْتُمْ تَسْتَتِرُونَ أَنْ يَشْهَدَ عَلَيْكُمْ سَمْعُكُمْ وَلَا أَبْصَارُكُمْ وَلَا جُلُودُكُمْ . . . . . وَذَلِكُمْ ظَنُّكُمُ الَّذِي ظَنَنْتُمْ بِرَبِّكُمْ أَرْدَاكُمْ فَأَصْبَحْتُمْ مِنَ الْخَاسِرِينَ﴾ » [فصلت : 22-23] "And you conceal things so that your ears, eyes, and skins may not bear witness against you... This is your lowly assumption about your Lord, and you have become among the losers."
Hadith 4048
(حديث مرفوع) حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو مُعَاوِيَةَ ، حَدَّثَنَا الْأَعْمَشُ ، عَنْ شِمْرِ بْنِ عَطِيَّةَ ، عَنْ مُغِيرَةَ بْنِ سَعْدِ بْنِ الْأَخْرَمِ ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ، قَالَ : قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " لَا تَتَّخِذُوا الضَّيْعَةَ ، فَتَرْغَبُوا فِي الدُّنْيَا " . قَالَ : ثُمَّ قَالَ عَبْدُ اللَّهِ وَبِرَاذَانَ مَا بِرَاذَانَ ! ! وَبِالْمَدِينَةِ مَا بِالْمَدِينَةِ ! ! .
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "Do not accumulate property, otherwise you will become engrossed in the world."
Hadith 4049
(حديث مرفوع) حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو مُعَاوِيَةَ ، حَدَّثَنَا الْأَعْمَشُ ، عَنْ شَقِيقٍ ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ، قَالَ : قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " مَنْ حَلَفَ عَلَى يَمِينٍ ، لِيَقْتَطِعَ بِهَا مَالَ امْرِئٍ مُسْلِمٍ ، لَقِيَ اللَّهَ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ وَهُوَ عَلَيْهِ غَضْبَانُ " . فَقَالَ الْأَشْعَثُ : فِيَّ وَاللَّهِ كَانَ ذَاكَ ، كَانَ بَيْنِي وَبَيْنَ رَجُلٍ مِنْ الْيَهُودِ أَرْضٌ ، فَجَحَدَنِي ، فَقَدَّمْتُهُ إِلَى النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، فَقَالَ لِي رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " أَلَكَ بَيِّنَةٌ ؟ " ، قُلْتُ : لَا ، فَقَالَ لِلْيَهُودِيِّ : " احْلِفْ " ، فَقُلْتُ : يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ، إِذَنْ يَحْلِفَ فَيَذْهَبَ مَالِي ، فَأَنْزَلَ اللَّهُ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ : إِنَّ الَّذِينَ يَشْتَرُونَ بِعَهْدِ اللَّهِ وَأَيْمَانِهِمْ ثَمَنًا قَلِيلا سورة آل عمران آية 77 إِلَى آخِرِ الْآيَةِ .
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Whoever seizes the wealth of a Muslim by swearing a false oath will meet Allah while He is angry with him." Upon hearing this, Sayyiduna Ash'ath (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "By Allah, this command was revealed concerning my case, the details of which are as follows: There was some land shared between me and a Jew. The Jew denied my share, so I brought him to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to me: 'Do you have any witnesses?' I replied: 'No.' The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to the Jew: 'Then you must swear an oath.' I said: 'O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)! He will take my property by swearing an oath.' Upon this, Allah revealed this verse up to the end: «﴿إِنَّ الَّذِينَ يَشْتَرُونَ بِعَهْدِ اللّٰهِ وَأَيْمَانِهِمْ ثَمَنًا قَلِيلًا . . . . .﴾» [آل عمران : 77] 'Indeed, those who exchange the covenant of Allah and their oaths for a small price . . . . . .'"
Hadith 4050
(حديث مرفوع) حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو مُعَاوِيَةَ ، ووكيع ، قَالَا : حَدَّثَنَا الْأَعْمَشُ ، عَنْ مُسْلِمِ بْنِ صُبَيْحٍ ، عَنْ مَسْرُوقٍ ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ، قَالَ : قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " إِنَّ مِنْ أَشَدِّ أَهْلِ النَّارِ عَذَابًا يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ الْمُصَوِّرِينَ " ، وَقَالَ وَكِيعٌ : أَشَدِّ النَّاسِ .
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "On the Day of Resurrection, the most severe punishment will be for those who make images."
Hadith 4051
(حديث مرفوع) حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو مُعَاوِيَةَ ، حَدَّثَنَا الْحَجَّاجُ ، عَنْ حَمَّادٍ ، عَنْ إِبْرَاهِيمَ ، عَنْ عَلْقَمَةَ ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ، أَنّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، كَانَ " يَنَامُ مُسْتَلْقِيًا حَتَّى يَنْفُخَ ، ثُمَّ يَقُومُ ، فَيُصَلِّي وَلَا يَتَوَضَّأُ " .
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) used to sleep lying on his back, to the extent that he would begin to snore, then he (peace and blessings be upon him) would wake up and lead the prayer without performing fresh ablution.
Hadith 4052
حَدَّثَنَاهُ إِسْمَاعِيلُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى بْنُ زَكَرِيَّا ، حَدَّثَنَا حَجَّاجٌ ، عَنْ فُضَيْلٍ ، عَنْ إِبْرَاهِيمَ ، عَنْ عَلْقَمَةَ ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ، عَنِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ . . . فَذَكَرَهُ .
The previous hadith is also narrated through this chain.
Hadith 4053
(حديث مرفوع) حَدَّثَنَا ابْنُ فُضَيْلٍ ، حَدَّثَنَا لَيْثٌ ، عَنْ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ الْأَسْوَدِ ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ، قَالَ : خَرَجَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ لِحَاجَةٍ لَهُ ، فَقَالَ : " ائْتِنِي بِشَيْءٍ أَسْتَنْجِي بِهِ ، وَلَا تُقْرِبْنِي حَائِلًا وَلَا رَجِيعًا " ، ثُمَّ أَتَيْتُهُ بِمَاءٍ فَتَوَضَّأَ ، ثُمَّ قَامَ فَصَلَّى ، فَحَنَا ، ثُمَّ طَبَّقَ يَدَيْهِ حِينَ رَكَعَ ، وَجَعَلَهُمَا بَيْنَ فَخِذَيْهِ " .
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) that once the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) went out to relieve himself and said to me: "Bring me something with which I can clean myself, but do not bring anything with changed color water or dung." Then I also brought water for ablution for the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), and the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) performed ablution and stood up to pray. In this prayer, when the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) bent his back for bowing (ruku'), he clasped his hands together and placed his hands between his thighs.
Hadith 4054
(حديث مرفوع) حَدَّثَنَا سُلَيْمَانُ بْنُ دَاوُدَ ، حَدَّثَنَا زُهَيْرٌ ، حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو إِسْحَاق ، عَنْ أَبِي الْأَحْوَصِ ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ، قَالَ : أَتَيْنَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فِي رَجُلٍ نَسْتَأْذِنُهُ أَنْ نَكْوِيَهُ ، فَسَكَتَ ، ثُمَّ سَأَلْنَاهُ مَرَّةً أُخْرَى ، فَسَكَتَ ، ثُمَّ سَأَلْنَاهُ الثَّالِثَةَ ؟ فَقَالَ : " ارْضِفُوهُ إِنْ شِئْتُمْ " كَأَنَّهُ غَضْبَانُ " .
Sayyiduna Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that once we went to the service of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and said that one of our companions is ill; can we treat him by cauterization? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) remained silent and did not answer. We asked again, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) again remained silent, and after a while said: "Heat stones and apply them." It seemed as if the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was displeased.
Hadith 4055
(حديث مرفوع) حَدَّثَنَا سُلَيْمَانُ بْنُ دَاوُدَ ، حَدَّثَنَا زُهَيْرٌ ، حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو إِسْحَاقَ ، عَنْ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ الْأَسْوَدِ ، عَنْ عَلْقَمَةَ ، وَالْأَسْوَدِ ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ، قَالَ : أَنَا رَأَيْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ " يُكَبِّرُ فِي كُلِّ رَفْعٍ وَوَضْعٍ ، وَقِيَامٍ وَقُعُودٍ ، وَيُسَلِّمُ عَنْ يَمِينِهِ وَعَنْ يَسَارِهِ : السَّلَامُ عَلَيْكُمْ وَرَحْمَةُ اللَّهِ ، السَّلَامُ عَلَيْكُمْ وَرَحْمَةُ اللَّهِ ، حَتَّى يَبْدُوَ جَانِبُ خَدِّهِ " ، وَرَأَيْتُ أَبَا بَكْرٍ ، وَعُمَرَ يَفْعَلَانِ ذَلِكَ .
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) that I saw the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) saying the takbeer every time he bowed, rose, stood, and sat, and he would turn to the right and left in such a way while saying salam that the whiteness of his blessed cheeks would be visible. And I saw Sayyiduna Abu Bakr and Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) doing the same.
Hadith 4056
(حديث مرفوع) حَدَّثَنَا سُلَيْمَانُ بْنُ دَاوُدَ ، حَدَّثَنَا زُهَيْرٌ ، حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو إِسْحَاقَ ، قَالَ : لَيْسَ أَبُو عُبَيْدَةَ ذَكَرَهُ ، وَلَكِنْ عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنُ الْأَسْوَدِ ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ، أَنّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ " أَتَى الْخَلَاءَ ، وَقَالَ : " ائْتِنِي بِثَلَاثَةِ أَحْجَار " ٍفَالْتَمَسْتُ ، فَوَجَدْتُ حَجَرَيْنِ ، وَلَمْ أَجِدْ الثَّالِثَ ، فَأَتَيْتُهُ بِحَجَرَيْنِ وَرَوْثَةٍ ، فَأَخَذَ الْحَجَرَيْنِ ، وَأَلْقَى الرَّوْثَةَ ، وَقَالَ : " إِنَّهَا رِكْسٌ " .
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) that once the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) went out to relieve himself and said to me, "Bring me three stones." I was able to bring two stones and a dry piece of dung. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) took the two stones and threw away the piece of dung, saying: "This is impure."
Hadith 4057
(حديث مرفوع) حَدَّثَنَا بَهْزٌ ، حَدَّثَنَا حَمَّادُ بْنُ زَيْدٍ ، حَدَّثَنَا عَاصِمُ بْنُ بَهْدَلَةَ ، عَنْ أَبِي وَائِلٍ ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ مَسْعُودٍ ، قَالَ : قَسَمَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ غَنَائِمَ حُنَيْنٍ بِالْجِعِرَّانَةِ ، قَالَ : فَازْدَحَمُوا عَلَيْهِ ، قَالَ : فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " إِنَّ عَبْدًا مِنْ عِبَادِ اللَّهِ بَعَثَهُ اللَّهُ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ إِلَى قَوْمِهِ ، فَكَذَّبُوهُ وَشَجُّوهُ ، فَجَعَلَ يَمْسَحُ الدَّمَ عَنْ جَبِينِهِ ، وَيَقُولُ : رَبِّ اغْفِرْ لِقَوْمِي ، فَإِنَّهُمْ لَا يَعْلَمُونَ " . قَالَ : قَالَ عَبْدُ اللَّهِ : فَكَأَنِّي أَنْظُرُ إِلَى رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَمْسَحُ جَبْهَتَهُ ، يَحْكِي الرَّجُلَ .
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) that once the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was distributing the spoils of the Battle of Hunayn at Ji'ranah. People gathered around the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was relating about a prophet whom his people had beaten, and he was wiping the blood from his face and kept saying: "O Lord! Forgive my people, for they do not know." Sayyiduna Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) says: That scene is still before my eyes, that while narrating this incident, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was wiping his own forehead.
Hadith 4058
(حديث مرفوع) حَدَّثَنَا ابْنُ أَبِي عَدِيٍّ ، وَيَزِيدُ ، قَالَا : أَخْبَرَنَا ابْنُ عَوْنٍ ، عَنْ عَمْرِو بْنِ سَعِيدٍ ، عَنْ حُمَيْدِ بْنِ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ ، قَالَ : قَالَ ابْنُ مَسْعُودٍ : كُنْتُ لَا أُحْبَسُ عَنْ ثَلَاثٍ وَقَالَ ابْنُ عَوْنٍ : فَنَسِيَ عَمْرٌو وَاحِدَةً ، وَنَسِيتُ أَنَا أُخْرَى ، وَبَقِيَتْ هَذِهِ : عَنِ النَّجْوَى ، عَنْ كَذَا ، وَعَنْ كَذَا ، قَالَ : فَأَتَيْتُهُ ، وَعِنْدَهُ مَالِكُ بْنُ مُرَارَةَ الرَّهَاوِيُّ ، قَالَ : فَأَدْرَكْتُ مِنْ آخِرِ حَدِيثِهِ ، وَهُوَ يَقُولُ : يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ، إِنِّي رَجُلٌ قَدْ قُسِمَ لِي مِنَ الْجَمَالِ مَا تَرَى ، فَمَا أُحِبُّ أَنَّ أَحَدًا مِنَ النَّاسِ فَضَلَنِي بِشِرَاكَيْنِ فَمَا فَوْقَهُمَا ، أَفَلَيْسَ ذَلِكَ هُوَ الْبَغْيَ ؟ قَالَ : " لَيْسَ ذَلِكَ بِالْبَغْيِ ، وَلَكِنَّ الْبَغْيَ مَنْ سَفِهَ الْحَقَّ أَوْ بَطِرَ الْحَقَّ ، وَغَمَطَ النَّاسَ " .
Sayyiduna Ibn Mas’ud (may Allah be pleased with him) says that I did not feel any barrier in whispering, nor in such and such thing. The narrator says that my teacher forgot one thing and I forgot another. Once I came to my teacher and Malik bin Mararah Rahawi was also present there. I found him narrating at the end of the hadith: O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)! You can see how many camels have come into my share. I do not want anyone to surpass me by even two or four straps in this number. Is this arrogance? He said: “No, this is not arrogance. Arrogance is that a person rejects the truth and looks down upon people.”
Hadith 4059
(حديث مرفوع) حَدَّثَنَا جَرِيرٌ ، عَنْ مَنْصُورٍ ، عَنْ أَبِي وَائِلٍ ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ، قَالَ : ذُكِرَ لِرَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ رَجُلٌ نَامَ لَيْلَةً حَتَّى أَصْبَحَ ، قَالَ : " ذَاكَ رَجُلٌ بَالَ الشَّيْطَانُ فِي أُذُنِهِ أَوْ أُذُنَيْهِ " .
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) that a man came to the service of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and said, "So-and-so slept through the night neglecting prayer." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Satan has urinated in his ear."
Hadith 4060
(حديث مرفوع) حَدَّثَنَا جَرِيرٌ ، عَنْ مَنْصُورٍ ، عَنْ أَبِي وَائِلٍ ، قَالَ : كَانَ عَبْدُ اللَّهِ مِمَّا يُذَكِّرُ كُلَّ يَوْمِ الْخَمِيسِ ، فَقِيلَ لَهُ : لَوَدِدْنَا أَنَّكَ ذَكَّرْتَنَا كُلَّ يَوْمٍ ، قَالَ : إِنِّي أَكْرَهُ أَنْ أُمِلَّكُمْ ، إِنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، كَانَ " يَتَخَوَّلُنَا بِالْمَوْعِظَةِ ، كَرَاهِيَةَ السَّآمَةِ عَلَيْنَا " .
Abu Wa'il says that Sayyiduna Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) used to give a sermon every Thursday. Someone said to him: We wish that you would give us a sermon every day. He replied: I do not like to cause you boredom, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) would also leave some days without giving advice and admonition for this very reason, as he did not like our becoming bored.
Hadith 4061
(حديث مرفوع) حَدَّثَنَا جَرِيرٌ ، عَنْ لَيْثٍ ، عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ يَزِيدَ ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ ، قَالَ : كُنْتُ مَعَ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ حَتَّى انْتَهَى إِلَى جَمْرَةِ الْعَقَبَةِ ، فَقَالَ : " فَنَاوَلْتُهُ سَبْعَةَ أَحْجَارٍ ، فَقَالَ لِي : خُذْ بِزِمَامِ النَّاقَةِ ، قَالَ : ثُمَّ عَادَ إِلَيْهَا ، فَرَمَى بِهَا مِنْ بَطْنِ الْوَادِي بِسَبْعِ حَصَيَاتٍ وَهُوَ رَاكِبٌ ، يُكَبِّرُ مَعَ كُلِّ حَصَاةٍ ، وَقَالَ : اللَّهُمَّ اجْعَلْهُ حَجًّا مَبْرُورًا ، وَذَنْبًا مَغْفُورًا ، ثُمَّ قَالَ : هَاهُنَا كَانَ يَقُومُ الَّذِي أُنْزِلَتْ عَلَيْهِ سُورَةُ الْبَقَرَةِ " .
Abdur Rahman bin Yazid says that during Hajj I was with Sayyiduna Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him). When he reached near Jamrah Aqabah, he said, "Give me some pebbles." I gave him seven pebbles. Then he said to me, "Hold the camel's rein." Then, stepping back, he threw seven pebbles at Jamrah Aqabah from the bottom of the valley while still mounted, and with each pebble he said takbeer and kept supplicating, "O Allah! Make it a Hajj Mabroor and forgive the sins." Then he said, "That personality also stood here upon whom Surah Al-Baqarah was revealed."
Hadith 4062
(حديث مرفوع) حَدَّثَنَا هُشَيْمٌ ، أَخْبَرَنَا سَيَّارٌ ، عَنْ أَبِي وَائِلٍ ، قَالَ : جَاءَ رَجُلٌ إِلَى عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ مَسْعُودٍ ، فَقَالَ : إِنِّي قَرَأْتُ الْبَارِحَةَ الْمُفَصَّلَ فِي رَكْعَةٍ ، فَقَالَ عَبْدُ اللَّهِ : أَنَثْرًا كَنَثْرِ الدَّقَلِ ، وَهَذًّا كَهَذِّ الشِّعْرِ ؟ إِنِّي لَأَعْلَمُ النَّظَائِرَ الَّتِي كَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ " يَقْرُنُ بَيْنَهُنَّ سُورَتَيْنِ فِي رَكْعَةٍ " .
Ibrahim (may Allah have mercy on him) says that once (a man from Banu Bajilah) — whose name was Nahik bin Sinan — came to the service of Sayyiduna Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) and said: "Last night I recited the Mufassalat (short surahs) in one rak'ah." Sayyiduna Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "Like inferior poetry? Or like low-quality prose? I also know examples where the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) recited two surahs in one rak'ah."
Hadith 4063
(حديث مرفوع) حَدَّثَنَا حَجَّاجٌ ، حَدَّثَنَا سُفْيَانُ ، حَدَّثَنَا مَنْصُورٌ ، عَنْ إِبْرَاهِيمَ ، عَنْ عَلْقَمَةَ ، عَنْ ابْنِ مَسْعُودٍ ، قَالَ : كُنَّا مَعَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فِي غَارٍ ، فَأُنْزِلَتْ عَلَيْهِ وَالْمُرْسَلَاتِ عُرْفًا ، فَجَعَلْنَا نَتَلَقَّاهَا مِنْهُ ، فَخَرَجَتْ حَيَّةٌ مِنْ جَانِبِ الْغَارِ ، فَقَالَ : " اقْتُلُوهَا " ، فَتَبَادَرْنَاهَا ، فَسَبَقَتْنَا ، فَقَالَ : " إِنَّهَا وُقِيَتْ شَرَّكُمْ ، كَمَا وُقِيتُمْ شَرَّهَا " .
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) that once we were with the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) in a cave, and there Surah Mursalat was revealed to the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him). We began to memorize it after hearing it from the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him). Suddenly, a snake came out of its hole. We quickly moved forward, but it outpaced us and went back into its hole. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said, "It has escaped from your harm just as you have escaped from its harm."
Hadith 4064
(حديث مرفوع) حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو مُعَاوِيَةَ ، حَدَّثَنَا الْأَعْمَشُ ، عَنْ شَقِيقِ بْنِ سَلَمَةَ ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ مَسْعُودٍ ، قَالَ : كُنَّا إِذَا جَلَسْنَا مَعَ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فِي الصَّلَاةِ ، قُلْنَا : السَّلَامُ عَلَى اللَّهِ قَبْلَ عِبَادِهِ ، السَّلَامُ عَلَى جِبْرِيلَ ، السَّلَامُ عَلَى مِيكَائِيلَ ، السَّلَامُ عَلَى فُلَانٍ ، السَّلَامُ عَلَى فُلَانٍ ، قَالَ : فَسَمِعَنَا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، فَقَالَ : " إِنَّ اللَّهَ هُوَ السَّلَامُ ، فَإِذَا جَلَسَ أَحَدُكُمْ فِي الصَّلَاةِ ، فَلْيَقُلْ : التَّحِيَّاتُ لِلَّهِ ، وَالصَّلَوَاتُ وَالطَّيِّبَاتُ ، السَّلَامُ عَلَيْكَ أَيُّهَا النَّبِيُّ وَرَحْمَةُ اللَّهِ وَبَرَكَاتُهُ ، السَّلَامُ عَلَيْنَا وَعَلَى عِبَادِ اللَّهِ الصَّالِحِينَ فَإِذَا قَالَهَا ، أَصَابَتْ كُلَّ عَبْدٍ صَالِحٍ فِي السَّمَاءِ وَالْأَرْضِ ، أَشْهَدُ أَنْ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ ، وَأَشْهَدُ أَنَّ مُحَمَّدًا عَبْدُهُ وَرَسُولُهُ ، ثُمَّ يَتَخَيَّرُ بَعْدُ مِنَ الدُّعَاءِ مَا شَاءَ " .
Sayyiduna Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that when we used to sit in Tashahhud with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), we would say: "Peace be upon Allah from His servants, peace be upon Jibreel (peace be upon him), peace be upon Mika'il (peace be upon him), peace be upon so-and-so and so-and-so." When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) heard us saying this, he said: "Allah Himself is the embodiment of peace, so when any one of you sits in Tashahhud, he should say: «التَّحِيَّاتُ لِلّٰهِ وَالصَّلَوَاتُ وَالطَّيِّبَاتُ، السَّلَامُ عَلَيْكَ أَيُّهَا النَّبِيُّ وَرَحْمَةُ اللّٰهِ وَبَرَكَاتُهُ، السَّلَامُ عَلَيْنَا وَعَلَى عِبَادِ اللّٰهِ الصَّالِحِينَ، أَشْهَدُ أَنْ لَا إِلٰهَ إِلَّا اللّٰهُ وَأَشْهَدُ أَنَّ مُحَمَّدًا عَبْدُهُ وَرَسُولُهُ» 'All verbal, physical, and bodily acts of worship are for Allah alone. O Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)! May Allah's peace, mercy, and blessings descend upon you. Peace be upon us and upon the righteous servants of Allah.' - When he says this phrase, it will include every righteous servant in the heavens and the earth. - 'I bear witness that there is no deity except Allah, and that Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) is His servant and His Messenger.' Then after this, he may supplicate for whatever he wishes."
Hadith 4065
(حديث مرفوع) حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو مُعَاوِيَةَ ، حَدَّثَنَا الْأَعْمَشُ ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ مُرَّةَ ، عَنْ مَسْرُوقٍ ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ، قَالَ : قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " لَا يَحِلُّ دَمُ امْرِئٍ يَشْهَدُ أَنْ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ ، وَأَنِّي رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ، إِلَّا بِإِحْدَى ثَلَاثٍ : الثَّيِّبُ الزَّانِي ، وَالنَّفْسُ بِالنَّفْسِ ، وَالتَّارِكُ لِدِينِهِ ، الْمُفَارِقُ لِلْجَمَاعَةِ " .
Sayyiduna Ibn Mas’ud (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “The blood of a Muslim who testifies that there is no deity except Allah and that I am the Messenger of Allah is not lawful, except in one of three cases: if he commits adultery after being married, or if he kills someone and retribution is required, or if he abandons his religion and separates from the community.”
