Musnad Ahmad

Tariq bin Shihab says that I heard Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) saying on the pulpit: By Allah! We have no book that we read except the Noble Qur’an, or this scroll which is hanging from the sword that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) gave to me. In it is detailed the shares of Zakat. The mentioned scroll used to hang from the sword of Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him), whose rings were made of iron.

Malik bin Umair says that I was present in the service of Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him), when suddenly Sa’sa’ah bin Sawhan arrived and, after greeting, said: O Commander of the Faithful! Prevent us from the things from which the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade you. He (Ali) replied: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade us from using gourds, green jars, wooden vessels, and vessels made by hollowing out wood (because wine used to be distilled in them), and also forbade silk, red saddle cloths, pure silk, and gold rings. Then he said that once the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) gifted me a silk garment. I wore it and went outside so that people could see that I had worn the garment given to me by the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) saw me, he ordered me to take it off, and sent one part of it to Sayyidah Fatimah (may Allah be pleased with her) and tore the other part and distributed it among his women.

Abdur Rahman bin Abi Laila says that once, Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) made the people swear in the courtyard of Kufa and said: Whoever heard any statement from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) about me at the occasion of Ghadir Khumm, let him stand up, and only he should stand who saw the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). Upon this, twelve men stood up and said: We ourselves saw that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) held the hand of Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him), and we heard him say: "O Allah! Befriend whoever befriends Ali, and be the enemy of whoever is hostile to him. Help whoever helps Ali, and forsake whoever forsakes him." On this occasion, there were three men who did not stand up; Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) invoked a curse upon them and they were afflicted by it.

Abdur Rahman bin Abi Laila says that when Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) heard the muezzin giving the adhan, he would repeat the same words that the muezzin said, and after saying «اَشْهَدُ أَنَّ مُحَمَّدًا رَسُوْلُ اللّٰهِ» in response to «اَشْهَدُ أَنَّ مُحَمَّدًا رَسُوْلُ اللّٰهِ», he would also say that those who deny Muhammad (peace be upon him) are liars.

Shuraih bin Hani says that I asked Sayyida Aisha Siddiqa (may Allah be pleased with her) a question regarding wiping over the socks, so she said: "You should ask this question to Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him), he has more knowledge about this issue because he used to accompany the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) during travels." So I asked Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him), and he said that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The traveler is permitted to wipe over the socks for three days and three nights, and the resident for one day and one night."

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) that I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say: "If I did not fear hardship for my ummah, I would have ordered them to use the miswak at every prayer time, and to delay the ‘Isha prayer until one third of the night had passed, because when the first third of the night passes, Allah (in a manner befitting His Majesty) descends to the lowest heaven and remains there until the break of dawn. A caller continues to call out: 'Is there anyone who asks, so that he may be given? Is there anyone who supplicates, so that his supplication may be answered? Is there anyone ill who seeks healing, so that he may be healed? Is there any sinner who seeks forgiveness for his sins, so that he may be forgiven?'"

The previous hadith is also narrated from Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him), its wording is the same but the chain of narration is different.

Someone asked Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) about Witr, whether it is obligatory. He replied that Witr does not have definitive proof from the Noble Qur'an like the obligatory prayers, but its obligation is established from the Sunnah of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and his companions (may Allah be pleased with them), and they always performed it.

Abdu Khair (may Allah have mercy on him) says that once Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) asked for water to perform ablution and said: Where are those people who think that in no situation is it permissible to drink water while standing? Then he took the vessel and drank its water while standing, then performed a light ablution, wiped over his shoes, and said: This is the ablution of a pure person who is not without ablution; this is the way the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to perform ablution.

On one occasion, Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) washed each part of the body three times while performing ablution and drank the leftover water from the ablution, then said: I saw the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) doing the same.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "When any one of you sneezes, he should say «اَلْحَمْدُ لِلّٰهِ», those around him should say «يَرْحَمُكَ اللّٰهُ», and the one who sneezed should reply to them with «يَهْدِيْكُمُ اللّٰهُ وَيُصْلِحُ بَالَكُمْ»."

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "When any one of you sneezes, he should say «اَلْحَمْدُ لِلّٰهِ عَلَي كُلِّ حَالٍ», those around him should say «يَرْحَمُكَ اللّٰهُ», and the one who sneezed should reply to them: «يَهْدِيْكُمُ اللّٰهُ وَيُصْلِحُ بَالَكُمْ»."

Abdu Khair (may Allah have mercy on him) says that once we were sitting in the mosque when Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) came and said, "Where is the one who asked about Witr?" Whoever among us had prayed one rak'ah quickly joined for the second rak'ah, and we all gathered around Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him). He said: "The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) initially used to pray Witr in the first part of the night, then he started praying it in the middle part, and then he continued to pray it at the time when dawn was about to break."

Abdullah bin Nafi’ (may Allah have mercy on him) says that once Sayyiduna Abu Musa (may Allah be pleased with him) came to visit Sayyiduna Imam Hasan (may Allah be pleased with him) to inquire about his health. Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said to him: “Have you come with the intention of visiting the sick or just to meet him?” He replied, “I have come with the intention of visiting the sick.” Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said: “I heard the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) say: ‘When a person visits his Muslim brother in the morning to inquire about his health, seventy thousand angels accompany him, and each of them prays for his forgiveness until the evening, and a garden is fixed for him in Paradise. And if he visits in the evening, then seventy thousand angels accompany him, and each of them prays for his forgiveness until the morning, and a garden is fixed for him in Paradise.’”

Abdullah bin Nafi’ (may Allah have mercy on him) says that once Sayyiduna Abu Musa (may Allah be pleased with him) came to visit Sayyiduna Imam Hasan (may Allah be pleased with him) to inquire about his health. And if he visits in the evening, then seventy thousand angels accompany him, and each of them prays for his forgiveness until morning, and a garden is fixed for him in Paradise.’”

Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I used to suffer from excessive discharge of madhy (pre-seminal fluid). I asked the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) about its ruling, so he said: “Ghusl is obligatory due to semen, and wudu is obligatory due to madhy.”

Aamir says that there was a woman named Shurahah whose husband was not present with her; he had gone to Syria. This woman became pregnant. Her master brought her to the service of Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) and said that this woman had committed adultery. The woman also confessed. Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) first gave her fifty lashes, then on Friday he carried out the punishment of stoning to death (rajm) upon her, and had a pit dug for her up to her navel. I was also present at that time. Then Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said that stoning is the Sunnah of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). If this crime had been proven by the testimony of a witness, then the one who testified would have started the stoning, because the witness first gives testimony and then throws the stone. But since this crime was proven by her confession, now I will be the first to throw a stone at her. Thus, Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) began, and afterwards people started throwing stones at her; I was also among them, and by Allah! I was also among those who sent this woman to Allah.

Once, someone asked Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) whether a person can ride the sacrificial animal—called Hadi—that he is taking for sacrifice during Hajj. He replied: There is no harm in it. Whenever the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) passed by those who were walking, he would instruct them to ride the Hadi animal, and you will not be able to follow anything superior to the Sunnah of your Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him).

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) cursed the one who consumes usury, the one who gives it, the one who writes usurious transactions, the witnesses to usurious transactions, the one who performs halalah, the one for whom halalah is performed, the one who withholds zakat, the one who tattoos, and the one who gets tattooed, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade wailing.

Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said that wearing flowered clothes of red color, silk clothes, and gold rings has been prohibited.

Once, the mention of the Khawarij was made in the presence of Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him), so he said: Among them there will be a man who is deformed in creation. If you had not gone to extremes, I would have told you the promise that Allah has made, through the tongue of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), to those who kill them. The narrator says: I asked him, "Did you really hear any statement from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) in this regard?" He replied: Yes! By the Lord of the Ka'bah.

When Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) fought against the people of Nahrawan, he gave the order regarding a specific man to search for him. The people found him among the slain in a pit. They brought him out, and Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) turned towards his companions and said: If you had not gone to excess, I would have told you the promise that Allah has made, through the tongue of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), to those who kill them. The narrator says: I asked him, "Did you really hear any statement from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) in this regard?" He replied: Yes! By the Lord of the Ka'bah.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "I have exempted you from paying zakat on horses and slaves, therefore you must pay zakat on silver in any case, the nisab of which is that one dirham is obligatory on every forty."

Abdu Khair (may Allah have mercy on him) says that once I was with Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him), a chair and a vessel were presented to him, he washed his palms three times, washed his face three times, washed both his arms including the elbows three times each, wiped his head once with both palms, and washed both his feet including the ankles, then said: Whoever wants to see the ablution of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), this is the ablution of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him).

Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said that we used to consider the Fajr prayer as the middle prayer, but the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said, "By this is meant the Asr prayer."

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The lives of Muslims are equal among themselves; if even the lowest of them grants protection to someone, that protection must be respected. And Muslims are like a single hand against others. Beware! No Muslim should be killed in retaliation for a disbeliever, nor should any dhimmi be killed as long as he is within the period of his covenant and remains upon its conditions."

Yusuf bin Masood’s grandmother says that a man passed by them on his camel, who was racing his camel in the field of Mina during the days of Tashreeq, and he was saying: “These are the days of eating, drinking, and remembrance (of Allah).” I asked people about him, and they told me that he was Sayyiduna Ali bin Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him).

Qais bin ‘Abad says that once I and Ashtar went to the service of Sayyiduna ‘Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) and asked him: Is there anything that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) specifically advised you about, which was not included for the general people? He replied: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) did not give me any special advice apart from the people, but whatever I heard from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), I wrote it in a scroll and kept it in the sheath of my sword. He took it out, and it was written in it: “The lives of the Muslims are equal among themselves; if even the lowest among them grants protection to someone, his protection will be respected. And the Muslims are like a single hand against others. Beware! No Muslim should be killed in exchange for a disbeliever, and no dhimmi should be killed as long as he is within the period of the treaty and abides by its conditions.” Also, it was written: “Whoever invents a bid‘ah (innovation) or shelters a person of bid‘ah, upon him is the curse of Allah, the angels, and all people.”

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) that on the day of the Battle of the Trench, the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "May Allah fill their (the polytheists') houses and graves with fire, for they did not let us perform the Asr prayer until the sun had set."

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "When any one of you sneezes, he should say «اَلْحَمْدُ لِلّٰهِ عَلَى كُلِّ حَالٍ», and those around him should say «يَرْحَمُكَ اللّٰهُ», and the one who sneezed should reply to them: «يَهْدِيْكُمُ اللّٰهُ وَيُصْلِحُ بَالَكُمْ»."

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) that once Sayyidah Fatimah (may Allah be pleased with her) complained to me that her hands had developed calluses from turning the millstone. So we went to the service of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). I said: O Messenger of Allah! Fatimah has come to you complaining about the calluses on her hands caused by turning the millstone, and she is requesting a servant from you. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Shall I not tell you something that is better for you both than a servant?" Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) instructed us to recite thirty-three times Subhan Allah, thirty-three times Alhamdulillah, and thirty-four times Allahu Akbar before sleeping.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) used to perform rukū‘ (bowing) in such a manner that if a bowl filled with water were placed on the Prophet’s (peace and blessings be upon him) back, it would not fall.

Abdu Khair, may Allah have mercy on him, says that once Syedna Ali, may Allah be pleased with him, performed ablution, and with a single handful of water, rinsed his mouth three times, put water into his nose three times, washed his face three times, then put his hand into the vessel and wiped his head and washed his feet, then said: "This is the ablution of your Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him."

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) that once Sayyiduna Ammar (may Allah be pleased with him) came and sought permission to enter. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said, "He is pure and a bearer of purity."

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Do not attribute false statements to me, for whoever attributes a false statement to me will enter Hell."

The previous hadith is also narrated through this second chain of transmission.
