Musnad of Ali ibn Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him)
Hadith 882
(حديث مرفوع) حَدَّثَنَا أَسْوَدُ بْنُ عَامِرٍ ، حَدَّثَنَا شَرِيكٌ ، عَنْ سِمَاكٍ ، عَنْ حَنَشٍ ، عَنْ عَلِيٍّ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ ، قَالَ : بَعَثَنِي رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ إِلَى الْيَمَنِ ، قَالَ : فَقُلْتُ : يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ، تَبْعَثُنِي إِلَى قَوْمٍ أَسَنَّ مِنِّي ، وَأَنَا حَدِثٌ لَا أُبْصِرُ الْقَضَاءَ ؟ قَالَ : فَوَضَعَ يَدَهُ عَلَى صَدْرِي ، وَقَالَ : " اللَّهُمَّ ثَبِّتْ لِسَانَهُ ، وَاهْدِ قَلْبَهُ ، يَا عَلِيُّ ، إِذَا جَلَسَ إِلَيْكَ الْخَصْمَانِ فَلَا تَقْضِ بَيْنَهُمَا حَتَّى تَسْمَعَ مِنَ الْآخَرِ كَمَا سَمِعْتَ مِنَ الْأَوَّلِ ، فَإِنَّكَ إِذَا فَعَلْتَ ذَلِكَ تَبَيَّنَ لَكَ الْقَضَاءُ " ، قَالَ : فَمَا اخْتَلَفَ عَلَيَّ قَضَاءٌ بَعْدُ ، أَوْ مَا أَشْكَلَ عَلَيَّ قَضَاءٌ بَعْدُ .
Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) intended to send me to Yemen, so I said: O Messenger of Allah! You are sending me to a people who are older than me, and I am young in age; I cannot judge properly. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) placed his blessed hand on my chest and prayed: «اَللّٰهُمَّ ثَبِّتْ لِسَانَهُ وَاهْدِ قَلْبَهُ» "O Allah! Make his tongue firm and guide his heart." O Ali! When two parties come to you, do not judge by listening to only one of them, but listen to both sides; in this way, it will be easier for you to judge." Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) says that after that, I never faced any difficulty in making a judgment.
Hadith 883
(حديث مرفوع) حَدَّثَنَا أَسْوَدُ بْنُ عَامِرٍ ، حَدَّثَنَا شَرِيكٌ ، عَنِ الْأَعْمَشِ ، عَنِ الْمِنْهَالِ ، عَنْ عَبَّادِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ الْأَسَدِيِّ ، عَنْ عَلِيٍّ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ ، قَالَ : لَمَّا نَزَلَتْ هَذِهِ الْآيَةُ : وَأَنْذِرْ عَشِيرَتَكَ الأَقْرَبِينَ سورة الشعراء آية 214 ، قَالَ : جَمَعَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ مِنْ أَهْلِ بَيْتِهِ ، فَاجْتَمَعَ ثَلَاثُونَ ، فَأَكَلُوا وَشَرِبُوا ، قَالَ : فَقَالَ لَهُمْ : " مَنْ يَضْمَنُ عَنِّي دَيْنِي وَمَوَاعِيدِي ، وَيَكُونُ مَعِي فِي الْجَنَّةِ ، وَيَكُونُ خَلِيفَتِي فِي أَهْلِي ؟ " ، فَقَالَ رَجُلٌ ، لَمْ يُسَمِّهِ شَرِيكٌ : يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ، أَنْتَ كُنْتَ بَحْرًا ، مَنْ يَقُومُ بِهَذَا ؟ ! قَالَ : ثُمَّ قَالَ الْآخَرُ ، قَالَ : فَعَرَضَ ذَلِكَ عَلَى أَهْلِ بَيْتِهِ ، فَقَالَ عَلِيٌّ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ : أَنَا .
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) that when the following verse was revealed: «﴿وَأَنْذِرْ عَشِيرَتَكَ الْأَقْرَبِينَ﴾ [الشعراء : 214]», the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) gathered his family members, thirty people assembled and all of them ate and drank. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to them: "Who will guarantee the fulfillment of my debts and promises so that he will be with me in Paradise, and will be my deputy among my family?" Later, someone said to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): O Messenger of Allah! You were like an ocean, who could stand in your place? In any case, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said the same to another, and finally, when he presented this invitation before his household, Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said: O Messenger of Allah! I will do this.
Hadith 884
(حديث مرفوع) حَدَّثَنَا أَسْوَدُ ، حَدَّثَنَا شَرِيكٌ ، عَنْ أَبِي إِسْحَاقَ ، عَنِ الْحَارِثِ ، عَنْ عَلِيٍّ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ ، أَنّ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ كَانَ " يُوتِرُ عِنْدَ الْأَذَانِ ، وَيُصَلِّي الرَّكْعَتَيْنِ عِنْدَ الْإِقَامَةِ " .
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) would perform Witr near the time of the Fajr adhan, and would offer the Sunnah of Fajr near the time of the iqamah.
Hadith 885
(حديث مرفوع) حَدَّثَنَا أَسْوَدُ ، حَدَّثَنَا شَرِيكٌ ، عَنْ أَبِي إِسْحَاقَ ، عَنْ عَاصِمٍ ، عَنْ عَلِيٍّ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ ، قَالَ : كَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ " يُصَلِّي بِالنَّهَارِ سِتَّ عَشْرَةَ رَكْعَةً " .
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) that throughout the day, the voluntary prayers (nawafil) of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) were sixteen rak‘ahs.
Hadith 886
(حديث مرفوع) حَدَّثَنَا إِسْحَاقُ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ الرَّازِيُّ ، حَدَّثَنَا سَلَمَةُ بْنُ الْفَضْلِ ، حَدَّثَنِي مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ إِسْحَاقَ ، عَنْ يَزِيدَ بْنِ أَبِي حَبِيبٍ ، عَنْ مَرْثَدِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ الْيَزَنِيِّ ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ زُرَيْرٍ الْغَافِقِيِّ ، عَنْ عَلِيِّ بْنِ أَبِي طَالِبٍ ، أَنّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ كَانَ " يَرْكَبُ حِمَارًا اسْمُهُ عُفَيْرٌ " .
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) that the name of the donkey which the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to ride was ‘Ufair.
Hadith 887
(حديث مرفوع) حَدَّثَنَا عَلِيُّ بْنُ بَحْرٍ ، حَدَّثَنَا بَقِيَّةُ بْنُ الْوَلِيدِ الْحِمْصِيُّ ، حَدَّثَنِي الْوَضِينُ بْنُ عَطَاءٍ ، عَنْ مَحْفُوظِ بْنِ عَلْقَمَةَ ، عَنْ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ عَائِذٍ الْأَزْدِيِّ ، عَنْ عَلِيِّ بْنِ أَبِي طَالِبٍ ، عَنِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، قَالَ : " إِنَّ السَّهَ وِكَاءُ الْعَيْنِ ، فَمَنْ نَامَ فَلْيَتَوَضَّأْ " .
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The eye is the bond of the private parts (meaning, as long as a person is awake, he is aware if his ablution breaks, but while sleeping, he does not know), therefore, whoever sleeps should perform ablution after waking up."
Hadith 888
(حديث موقوف) حَدَّثَنَا حَدَّثَنَا حُسَيْنُ بْنُ الْحَسَنِ الْأَشْقَرُ ، حَدَّثَنِي ابْنُ قَابُوسَ بْنِ أَبِي ظَبْيَانَ الْجَنْبِيُّ ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ ، عَنْ جَدِّهِ ، عَنْ عَلِيٍّ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ ، قَالَ : " لَمَّا قَتَلْتُ مَرْحَبًا جِئْتُ بِرَأْسِهِ إِلَى النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ " .
Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that on the occasion of the Battle of Khaybar, when I killed Marhab, I brought his head and presented it to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him).
Hadith 889
(حديث مرفوع) حَدَّثَنَا عَبْد اللَّهِ ، حَدَّثَنَا شَيْبَانُ أَبُو مُحَمَّدٍ ، حَدَّثَنَا حَمَّادُ بْنُ سَلَمَةَ ، أَنْبَأَنَا يُونُسُ بْنُ خَبَّابٍ ، عَنْ جَرِيرِ بْنِ حَيَّانَ ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ ، أَنَّ عَلِيًّا رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ لِأَبِيهِ : لَأَبْعَثَنَّكَ فِيمَا بَعَثَنِي فِيهِ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " أَنْ أُسَوِّيَ كُلَّ قَبْرٍ ، وَأَنْ أَطْمِسَ كُلَّ صَنَمٍ " .
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) that he addressed his companion Hayyan and said: I am sending you for the same task for which the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) sent me. He commanded me to level every grave and to obliterate every idol.
Hadith 890
(حديث مرفوع) حَدَّثَنَا عَبْد اللَّهِ ، حَدَّثَنَا إِسْحَاقُ بْنُ إِسْمَاعِيلَ ، حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ فُضَيْلٍ ، عَنْ يَزِيدَ بْنِ أَبِي زِيَادٍ ، عَنْ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ أَبِي لَيْلَى ، قَالَ : سَمِعْتُ عَلِيًّا رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ ، يَقُولُ : كُنْتُ رَجُلًا مَذَّاءً ، فَسَأَلْتُ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، فَقَالَ : " فِيهِ الْوُضُوءُ " .
Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I used to suffer from excessive discharge of madhiy, so I asked the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) about its ruling. He said: "Only wudu is obligatory in the case of madhiy."
Hadith 891
(حديث مرفوع) حَدَّثَنَا عَبْد اللَّهِ ، حَدَّثَنِي وَهْبُ بْنُ بَقِيَّةَ الْوَاسِطِيُّ ، أَنْبَأَنَا خَالِدٌ ، عَنْ يَزِيدَ بْنِ أَبِي زِيَادٍ ، عَنْ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ أَبِي لَيْلَى ، عَنْ عَلِيٍّ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ ، قَالَ : كُنْتُ رَجُلًا مَذَّاءً فَسَأَلْتُ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، فَقَالَ : " فِيهِ الْوُضُوءُ ، وَفِي الْمَنِيِّ الْغُسْلُ " .
Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said that I used to suffer from excessive discharge of madhiy. I asked the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) about its ruling, so he said: "Ghusl is obligatory due to semen, and wudu is obligatory due to madhiy."
Hadith 892
(حديث مرفوع) حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى بْنُ سَعِيدٍ الْأُمَوِيُّ ، حَدَّثَنَا ابْنُ أَبِي لَيْلَى ، عَنْ ابْنِ الْأَصْبَهَانِيِّ ، عَنْ جَدَّةٍ لَهُ وَكَانَتْ سُرِّيَّةً لِعَلِيٍّ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ ، قَالَتْ : قَالَ عَلِيٌّ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ : " كُنْتُ رَجُلًا نَئُومًا ، وَكُنْتُ إِذَا صَلَّيْتُ الْمَغْرِبَ وَعَلَيَّ ثِيَابِي نِمْتُ ثَمَّ ، قَالَ يَحْيَى بْنُ سَعِيدٍ : فَأَنَامُ قَبْلَ الْعِشَاءِ ، فَسَأَلْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ عَنْ ذَلِكَ ، فَرَخَّصَ لِي " .
Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I used to feel very sleepy, so much so that when I would perform the Maghrib prayer and my clothes were on me, I would sleep right there. I asked the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) about this issue, so the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) permitted me to sleep before ‘Isha (on the condition that I would wake up for the ‘Isha prayer).
Hadith 893
(حديث مرفوع) حَدَّثَنَا عَبْد اللَّهِ ، حَدَّثَنَا شَيْبَانُ أَبُو مُحَمَّدٍ ، حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الْعَزِيزِ بْنُ مُسْلِمٍ يَعْنِي أَبَا زَيْدٍ الْقَسْمَلِيَّ ، حَدَّثَنَا يَزِيدُ بْنُ أَبِي زِيَادٍ ، عَنْ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ أَبِي لَيْلَى ، عَنْ عَلِيٍّ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ ، قَالَ : كُنْتُ رَجُلًا مَذَّاءً ، فَسَأَلْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ عَنْ ذَلِكَ ، فَقَالَ : " فِي الْمَذْيِ الْوُضُوءُ ، وَفِي الْمَنِيِّ الْغُسْلُ " .

Hadith 894
(حديث مرفوع) حَدَّثَنَا عَبْد اللَّهِ ، حَدَّثَنِي أَبُو بَكْرٍ الْبَاهِلِيُّ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عَمْرِو بْنِ الْعَبَّاسِ ، حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الْوَهَّابِ يَعْنِي الثَّقَفِيَّ ، حَدَّثَنَا أَيُّوبُ ، عَنْ عَبْدِ الْكَرِيمِ ، وَابْنِ أَبِي نَجِيحٍ ، عَنْ مُجَاهِدٍ ، عَنْ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ أَبِي لَيْلَى ، عَنْ عَلِيٍّ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ أَنّ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ بَعَثَ مَعَهُ بِهَدْيِهِ ، فَأَمَرَهُ أَنْ " يَتَصَدَّقَ بِلُحُومِهَا وَجُلُودِهَا وَأَجِلَّتِهَا " .
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) sent a sacrificial animal with him and instructed: "Distribute the skins and saddlecloths of these camels, and also distribute the meat."
Hadith 895
(حديث موقوف) حَدَّثَنَا حَدَّثَنَا شُجَاعُ بْنُ الْوَلِيدِ ، قَالَ : ذَكَرَ خَلَفُ بْنُ حَوْشَبٍ ، عَنْ أَبِي إِسْحَاقَ ، عَنْ عَبْدِ خَيْرٍ ، عَنْ عَلِيٍّ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ ، قَالَ : " سَبَقَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، وَصَلَّى أَبُو بَكْرٍ ، وَثَلَّثَ عُمَرُ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ ، ثُمَّ خَبَطَتْنَا ، أَوْ أَصَابَتْنَا ، فِتْنَةٌ ، يَعْفُو اللَّهُ عَمَّنْ يَشَاءُ " .
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) departed first, then Sayyiduna Abu Bakr Siddiq (may Allah be pleased with him) departed second, and Sayyiduna Umar Farooq (may Allah be pleased with him) departed third. After that, trials surrounded us; Allah will forgive whomever He wills.
Hadith 896
(حديث مرفوع) حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو الْمُغِيرَةِ ، حَدَّثَنَا صَفْوَانُ ، حَدَّثَنِي شُرَيْحٌ يَعْنِي ابْنَ عُبَيْدٍ ، قَالَ : ذُكِرَ أَهْلُ الشَّامِ عِنْدَ عَلِيِّ بْنِ أَبِي طَالِبٍ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ وَهُوَ بِالْعِرَاقِ ، فَقَالُوا : الْعَنْهُمْ يَا أَمِيرَ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ ، قَالَ : لَا ، إِنِّي سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَقُولُ : " الْأَبْدَالُ يَكُونُونَ بِالشَّامِ ، وَهُمْ أَرْبَعُونَ رَجُلًا ، كُلَّمَا مَاتَ رَجُلٌ أَبْدَلَ اللَّهُ مَكَانَهُ رَجُلًا ، يُسْقَى بِهِمْ الْغَيْثُ ، وَيُنْتَصَرُ بِهِمْ عَلَى الْأَعْدَاءِ ، وَيُصْرَفُ عَنْ أَهْلِ الشَّامِ بِهِمْ الْعَذَابُ " .
Ibn Ubaid says that when Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) was in Iraq, the people of Syria were mentioned in his presence. The people said: O Commander of the Faithful! Pray for a curse against them. He replied: No, I heard the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) say: "The Abdal are in Syria, they are forty men in total. Whenever one of them passes away, Allah replaces him with another person (and for this reason they are called Abdal). Because of the blessings of their supplication, rain falls, through their blessings victory is granted over enemies, and because of their blessings, punishment is averted from the people of Syria."
Hadith 897
(حديث مرفوع) حَدَّثَنَا عَبْد اللَّهِ ، حَدَّثَنِي سُوَيْدُ بْنُ سَعِيدٍ الْهَرَوِيُّ ، حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى بْنُ زَكَرِيَّا بْنِ أَبِي زَائِدَةَ ، عَنِ ابْنِ جُرَيْجٍ ، عَنْ الْحَسَنِ بْنِ مُسْلِمٍ ، عَنْ مُجَاهِدٍ ، عَنْ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ أَبِي لَيْلَى ، عَنْ عَلِيٍّ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ ، قَالَ : بَعَثَنِي رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فِي الْبُدْنِ ، قَالَ : " لَا تُعْطِ الْجَازِرَ مِنْهَا شَيْئًا " .
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) sent me with the sacrificial animals and instructed me not to give the butcher anything from them as payment.
Hadith 898
(حديث مرفوع) حَدَّثَنَا عَلِيُّ بْنُ إِسْحَاقَ ، أَخْبَرَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ يَعْنِي ابْنَ الْمُبَارَكِ ، أَخْبَرَنَا عُمَرُ بْنُ سَعِيدِ بْنِ أَبِي حُسَيْنٍ ، عَنِ ابْنِ أَبِي مُلَيْكَةَ ، أَنَّهُ سَمِعَ ابْنَ عَبَّاسٍ ، يَقُولُ : وُضِعَ عُمَرُ بْنُ الْخَطَّابِ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ عَلَى سَرِيرِهِ ، فَتَكَنَّفَهُ النَّاسُ يَدْعُونَ وَيُصَلُّونَ قَبْلَ أَنْ يُرْفَعَ ، وَأَنَا فِيهِمْ ، فَلَمْ يَرُعْنِي إِلَّا رَجُلٌ قَدْ أَخَذَ بِمَنْكِبِي مِنْ وَرَائِي ، فَالْتَفَتُّ فَإِذَا هُوَ عَلِيُّ بْنُ أَبِي طَالِبٍ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ ، فَتَرَحَّمَ عَلَى عُمَرَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ ، فَقَالَ : مَا خَلَّفْتَ أَحَدًا أَحَبَّ إِلَيَّ أَنْ أَلْقَى اللَّهَ تَعَالَى بِمِثْلِ عَمَلِهِ مِنْكَ ، وَايْمُ اللَّهِ إِنْ كُنْتُ لَأَظُنُّ لَيَجْعَلَنَّكَ اللَّهُ مَعَ صَاحِبَيْكَ ، وَذَلِكَ أَنِّي كُنْتُ أُكْثِرُ أَنْ أَسْمَعَ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَقُولُ : " فَذَهَبْتُ أَنَا وَأَبُو بَكْرٍ وَعُمَرُ ، وَدَخَلْتُ أَنَا وَأَبُو بَكْرٍ وَعُمَرُ ، وَخَرَجْتُ أَنَا وَأَبُو بَكْرٍ وَعُمَرُ " ، وَإِنْ كُنْتُ لَأَظُنُّ لَيَجْعَلَنَّكَ اللَّهُ مَعَهُمَا .
Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates that when the body of Sayyiduna Umar Farooq (may Allah be pleased with him) was brought and placed on the bier, people surrounded him from all sides, began praying for him, and even before the funeral was lifted, they started offering his funeral prayer. I was also among those people. Suddenly, a man came from behind, grabbed my shoulder, and turned my attention towards him. I saw that it was Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him). He prayed for mercy for Sayyiduna Umar Farooq (may Allah be pleased with him) and addressing him said, "You have not left behind anyone whose record of deeds I would prefer to meet Allah with more than yours. By Allah! I was certain that Allah would keep you with your two companions, because I often heard the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) saying, 'I, Abu Bakr, and Umar went; I, Abu Bakr, and Umar entered; I, Abu Bakr, and Umar came out.' Therefore, I was sure that Allah would keep you with both of them."
Hadith 899
(حديث مرفوع) حَدَّثَنَا عَلِيُّ بْنُ إِسْحَاقَ ، أَنْبَأَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ ، أَنْبَأَنَا يَحْيَى بْنُ أَيُّوبَ ، عَنْ عُبَيْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ زَحْرٍ ، عَنْ عَلِيِّ بْنِ يَزِيدَ ، عَنِ الْقَاسِمِ ، عَنْ أَبِي أُمَامَةَ ، أَنَّ عَلِيَّ بْنَ أَبِي طَالِبٍ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ أَخْبَرَهُ : أَنَّهُ كَانَ يَأْتِي النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، قَالَ : فَكُنْتُ " إِذَا وَجَدْتُهُ يُصَلِّي سَبَّحَ فَدَخَلْتُ ، وَإِذَا لَمْ يَكُنْ يُصَلِّي أَذِنَ " .
Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that I used to present myself before the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him). If the Prophet (peace be upon him) was standing and performing prayer at that time, he would say "Subhan Allah," and if he was not performing prayer at that time, he would grant permission as it was (and there would be no need to say Subhan Allah).
Hadith 900
(حديث مرفوع) حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو الْيَمَانِ ، أَنْبَأَنَا شُعَيْبٌ ، عَنِ الزُّهْرِيِّ ، أَخْبَرَنِي عَلِيُّ بْنُ حُسَيْنٍ ، أَنَّ حُسَيْنَ بْنَ عَلِيٍّ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ أَخْبَرَهُ ، أَنَّ عَلِيَّ بْنَ أَبِي طَالِبٍ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ أَخْبَرَهُ ، أَنّ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ طَرَقَهُ وَفَاطِمَةَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهَا ابْنَةَ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ لَيْلَةً ، فَقَالَ : " أَلَا تُصَلِّيَانِ ؟ " ، فَقُلْتُ : يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ، إِنَّمَا أَنْفُسُنَا بِيَدِ اللَّهِ ، فَإِذَا شَاءَ أَنْ يَبْعَثَنَا بَعَثَنَا ، فَانْصَرَفَ حِينَ قُلْتُ ذَلِكَ ، وَلَمْ يَرْجِعْ إِلَيَّ شَيْئًا ، ثُمَّ سَمِعْتُهُ وَهُوَ مُوَلٍّ يَضْرِبُ فَخِذَهُ يَقُولُ وَكَانَ الإِنْسَانُ أَكْثَرَ شَيْءٍ جَدَلا سورة الكهف آية 54 .
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) that once the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) came to us at night and said, "Why do you people not pray?" I replied, "O Messenger of Allah! Our souls are in Allah's control; when He wants to wake us, He wakes us." Upon hearing this, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) did not reply to me and went back. I listened carefully and heard the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) striking his thigh with his hand and saying, "Man is very argumentative indeed."
Hadith 901
حَدَّثَنَا يَعْقُوبُ ، حَدَّثَنَا أَبِي ، عَنْ صَالِحٍ ، قَالَ ابْنُ شِهَابٍ : أَخْبَرَنِي عَلِيُّ بْنُ حُسَيْنٍ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ ، أَنَّ أَبَاهُ حُسَيْنَ بْنَ عَلِيٍّ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ أَخْبَرَهُ ، أَنَّ عَلِيَّ بْنَ أَبِي طَالِبٍ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ ، أَخْبَرَهُ ، أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ طَرَقَهُ هُوَ وَفَاطِمَةَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهَا ، فَذَكَرَ مِثْلَهُ .
The previous hadith is also narrated through this second chain of transmission.
Hadith 902
(حديث مرفوع) حَدَّثَنَا عَلِيُّ بْنُ بَحْرٍ ، حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ بْنِ عُمَرَ بْنِ كَيْسَانَ ، قَالَ أَبِي ، سَمِعْتُهُ يُحَدِّثُ ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ وَهْبٍ ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ ، عَنْ أَبِي خَلِيفَةَ ، عَنْ عَلِيِّ بْنِ أَبِي طَالِبٍ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ ، قَالَ : قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " إِنَّ اللَّهَ رَفِيقٌ يُحِبُّ الرِّفْقَ ، وَيُعْطِي عَلَى الرِّفْقِ مَا لَا يُعْطِي عَلَى الْعُنْفِ " .
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Allah is gentle, He loves gentleness, and He grants through gentleness what He does not grant through harshness."
Hadith 903
(حديث مرفوع) حَدَّثَنَا عَبْد اللَّهِ ، حَدَّثَنِي عُثْمَانُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ أَبِي شَيْبَةَ ، حَدَّثَنَا ابْنُ فُضَيْلٍ ، عَنِ الْأَعْمَشِ ، عَنِ الْحَكَمِ ، عَنْ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ أَبِي لَيْلَى ، عَنْ عَلِيٍّ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ ، قَالَ : قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " مَنْ حَدَّثَ عَنِّي حَدِيثًا يُرَى أَنَّهُ كَذِبٌ ، فَهُوَ أَكْذَبُ الْكَاذِبِينَ " .
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Whoever attributes to me a hadith which he considers to be a lie, then he is one of the two liars."
Hadith 904
(حديث مرفوع) حَدَّثَنَا عَبْد اللَّهِ ، حَدَّثَنِي مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ أَبِي بَكْرٍ الْمُقَدَّمِيُّ ، حَدَّثَنَا حَمَّادُ بْنُ زَيْدٍ ، عَنْ أَيُّوبَ ، وَهِشَامٍ ، عَنْ مُحَمَّدٍ ، عَنْ عَبِيدَةَ ، أَنَّ عَلِيًّا رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ ذَكَرَ أَهْلَ النَّهْرَوَانِ ، فَقَالَ : " فِيهِمْ رَجُلٌ مُودَنُ الْيَدِ ، أَوْ مَثْدُونُ الْيَدِ ، أَوْ مُخْدَجُ الْيَدِ ، لَوْلَا أَنْ تَبْطَرُوا لَنَبَّأْتُكُمْ مَا وَعَدَ اللَّهُ الَّذِينَ يَقْتُلُونَهُمْ عَلَى لِسَانِ مُحَمَّدٍ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ " ، فَقُلْتُ لِعَلِيٍّ : أَنْتَ سَمِعْتَهُ ؟ قَالَ : إِي وَرَبِّ الْكَعْبَةِ .
Once, the mention of the Khawarij was made in the presence of Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him), so he said: Among them there will be a man who is deformed in creation. If you do not go to extremes, I will tell you the promise that Allah has made, through the tongue of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), to those who kill them. The narrator says: I asked him, "Did you really hear any statement from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) regarding this?" He replied: Yes! By the Lord of the Ka'bah.
Hadith 905
(حديث مرفوع) حَدَّثَنَا مَنْصُورُ بْنُ وَرْدَانَ الْأَسَدِيُّ ، حَدَّثَنَا عَلِيُّ بْنُ عَبْدِ الْأَعْلَى ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ ، عَنْ أَبِي الْبَخْتَرِيِّ ، عَنْ عَلِيٍّ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ ، قَالَ : لَمَّا نَزَلَتْ هَذِهِ الْآيَةُ : وَلِلَّهِ عَلَى النَّاسِ حِجُّ الْبَيْتِ مَنِ اسْتَطَاعَ إِلَيْهِ سَبِيلا سورة آل عمران آية 97 ، قَالُوا : يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ، أَفِي كُلِّ عَامٍ ؟ فَسَكَتَ ، فَقَالُوا : أَفِي كُلِّ عَامٍ ؟ فَسَكَتَ ، قَالَ : ثُمَّ قَالُوا : أَفِي كُلِّ عَامٍ ؟ فَقَالَ : " لَا ، وَلَوْ قُلْتُ : نَعَمْ ، لَوَجَبَتْ " ، فَأَنْزَلَ اللَّهُ تَعَالَى : يَأَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا لا تَسْأَلُوا عَنْ أَشْيَاءَ إِنْ تُبْدَ لَكُمْ تَسُؤْكُمْ سورة المائدة آية 101 ، إِلَى آخِرِ الْآيَةِ .
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) that when the following verse was revealed: «﴿وَلِلّٰهِ عَلَى النَّاسِ حِجُّ الْبَيْتِ مَنِ اسْتَطَاعَ إِلَيْهِ سَبِيلًا﴾ [آل عمران : 97]», the people asked: "O Messenger of Allah! Is performing Hajj every year obligatory?" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) remained silent. After the question was asked three times and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) remained silent, he said: "No, and if I had said yes, then performing Hajj every year would have become obligatory." And in this context, this verse was revealed: «﴿يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا لَا تَسْأَلُوا عَنْ أَشْيَاءَ إِنْ تُبْدَ لَكُمْ تَسُؤْكُمْ .....﴾ [المائدة : 101]» "O you who believe! Do not ask about things which, if made plain to you, may cause you trouble...... ."
Hadith 906
(حديث مرفوع) حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو مُعَاوِيَةَ ، حَدَّثَنَا الْأَعْمَشُ ، عَنِ الْحَكَمِ ، عَنِ الْقَاسِمِ بْنِ مُخَيْمِرَةَ ، عَنْ شُرَيْحِ بْنِ هَانِئٍ ، قَالَ : سَأَلْتُ عَائِشَةَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهَا عَنِ الْمَسْحِ ، فَقَالَتْ : ائْتِ عَلِيًّا رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ ، فَهُوَ أَعْلَمُ بِذَلِكَ مِنِّي ، قَالَ : فَأَتَيْتُ عَلِيًّا رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ فَسَأَلْتُهُ عَنِ الْمَسْحِ عَلَى الْخُفَّيْنِ ، قَالَ : فَقَالَ : كَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَأْمُرُنَا " أَنْ نَمْسَحَ عَلَى الْخُفَّيْنِ يَوْمًا وَلَيْلَةً ، وَلِلْمُسَافِرِ ثَلَاثًا " .
Shuraih bin Hani says that I asked Sayyida Aisha Siddiqa (may Allah be pleased with her) a question regarding wiping over the socks, so she said, "You should ask this question to Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him); he has more knowledge about this issue." So I asked Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him), and he said, "The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to command us to wipe over the socks for one day and night, and for the traveler, three days and three nights."

Hadith 908
(حديث موقوف) حَدَّثَنَا عَبْد اللَّهِ ، حَدَّثَنِي نَصْرُ بْنُ عَلِيٍّ الْأَزْدِيُّ ، حَدَّثَنَا بِشْرُ بْنُ الْمُفَضَّلِ ، عَنْ شُعْبَةَ ، عَنْ حَبِيبِ بْنِ أَبِي ثَابِتٍ ، عَنْ عَبْدِ خَيْرٍ ، سَمِعْتُ عَلِيًّا رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ ، يَقُولُ : " أَلَا أُخْبِرُكُمْ بِخَيْرِ هَذِهِ الْأُمَّةِ بَعْدَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ؟ أَبُو بَكْرٍ وَعُمَرُ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُمَا " .
Abdu Khair (may Allah have mercy on him) says that I heard Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) saying: Shall I tell you the name of the best person in this Ummah after the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)? Sayyiduna Abu Bakr Siddiq and Sayyiduna Umar Farooq (may Allah be pleased with them both).
Hadith 909
(حديث مرفوع) حدثنا عبد الله ، حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ عَوْنٍ ، حَدَّثَنَا مُبَارَكُ بْنُ سَعِيدٍ أَخُو سُفْيَانَ ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ ، عَنْ حَبِيبِ بْنِ أَبِي ثَابِتٍ ، عَنْ عَبْدِ خَيْرٍ الْهَمْدَانِيِّ ، قَالَ : سَمِعْتُ عَلِيًّا رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ ، يَقُولُ عَلَى الْمِنْبَرِ : " أَلَا أُخْبِرُكُمْ بِخَيْرِ هَذِهِ الْأُمَّةِ بَعْدَ نَبِيِّهَا ؟ قَالَ : فَذَكَرَ أَبَا بَكْرٍ ، ثُمَّ قَالَ : أَلَا أُخْبِرُكُمْ بِالثَّانِي ؟ قَالَ : فَذَكَرَ عُمَرَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ ، ثُمَّ قَالَ : لَوْ شِئْتُ لَأَنْبَأْتُكُمْ بِالثَّالِثِ ، قَالَ : وَسَكَتَ ، فَرَأَيْنَا أَنَّهُ يَعْنِي نَفْسَهُ ، فَقُلْتُ : أَنْتَ سَمِعْتَهُ يَقُولُ هَذَا ؟ قَالَ : نَعَمْ وَرَبِّ الْكَعْبَةِ ، وَإِلَّا صُمَّتَا " .
It is narrated from Abdu Khair Hamdani (may Allah have mercy on him) that I once heard Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) saying (during a sermon): "Shall I not tell you who is the best person in this Ummah after the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)? He is Sayyiduna Abu Bakr Siddiq (may Allah be pleased with him). And shall I tell you who is the best person in this Ummah after Sayyiduna Abu Bakr Siddiq (may Allah be pleased with him)? He is Sayyiduna Umar Farooq (may Allah be pleased with him)." Then he said: "If I wish, I can also tell you the name of the third person." However, he remained silent. We understood that he himself was Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him). I asked the narrator, "Did you really hear Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) saying this?" He said, "By the Lord of the Ka'bah! Yes, (if I am lying) may these ears become deaf."
Hadith 910
(حديث مرفوع) حَدَّثَنَا عَبْد اللَّهِ ، حَدَّثَنَا إِسْحَاقُ بْنُ إِسْمَاعِيلَ ، حَدَّثَنَا مُسْهِرُ بْنُ عَبْدِ الْمَلِكِ بْنِ سَلْعٍ ، حَدَّثَنَا أَبِي عَبْدُ الْمَلِكِ بْنُ سَلْعٍ ، عَنْ عَبْدِ خَيْرٍ ، عَنْ عَلِيٍّ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ ، أَنَّهُ " غَسَلَ كَفَّيْهِ ثَلَاثًا ، وَمَضْمَضَ وَاسْتَنْشَقَ ثَلَاثًا ، وَغَسَلَ وَجْهَهُ ثَلَاثًا ، وَقَالَ : هَذَا وُضُوءُ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ " .
Abdu Khair, may Allah have mercy on him, says that once Sayyiduna Ali, may Allah be pleased with him, taught us the way of ablution of the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him. So first, he washed his hands three times, rinsed his mouth three times, put water into his nose, washed his face three times, and said that the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, used to perform ablution in this manner.
Hadith 911
(حديث مرفوع) حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو مُعَاوِيَةَ ، حَدَّثَنَا الْأَعْمَشُ ، عَنْ مُسْلِمِ بْنِ صُبَيْحٍ ، عَنْ شُتَيْرِ بْنِ شَكَلٍ ، عَنْ عَلِيٍّ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ ، قَالَ : قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَوْمَ الْأَحْزَابِ : " شَغَلُونَا عَنِ الصَّلَاةِ الْوُسْطَى صَلَاةِ الْعَصْرِ ، مَلَأَ اللَّهُ قُبُورَهُمْ وَبُيُوتَهُمْ نَارًا " ، قَالَ : ثُمَّ صَلَّاهَا بَيْنَ الْعِشَاءَيْنِ : بَيْنَ الْمَغْرِبِ وَالْعِشَاءِ ، وقَالَ أَبُو مُعَاوِيَةَ مَرَّةً : يَعْنِي : بَيْنَ الْمَغْرِبِ وَالْعِشَاءِ .
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) that on the day of the Battle of the Trench, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "May Allah fill their houses and graves with fire, for they did not let us perform the Asr prayer until the sun had set." Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) performed the Asr prayer between Maghrib and Isha.
Hadith 912
(حديث مرفوع) حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو مُعَاوِيَةَ ، حَدَّثَنَا الْأَعْمَشُ ، عَنْ خَيْثَمَةَ ، عَنْ سُوَيْدِ بْنِ غَفَلَةَ ، قَالَ : قَالَ عَلِيٌّ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ : إِذَا حَدَّثْتُكُمْ عَنْ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ حَدِيثًا ، فَلَأَنْ أَخِرَّ مِنَ السَّمَاءِ أَحَبُّ إِلَيَّ مِنْ أَنْ أَكْذِبَ عَلَيْهِ ، وَإِذَا حَدَّثْتُكُمْ عَنْ غَيْرِهِ فَإِنَّمَا أَنَا رَجُلٌ مُحَارِبٌ ، وَالْحَرْبُ خَدْعَةٌ ، سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَقُولُ : " يَخْرُجُ فِي آخِرِ الزَّمَانِ قَوْمٌ أَحْدَاثُ الْأَسْنَانِ ، سُفَهَاءُ الْأَحْلَامِ ، يَقُولُونَ مِنْ قَوْلِ خَيْرِ الْبَرِيَّةِ ، لَا يُجَاوِزُ إِيمَانُهُمْ حَنَاجِرَهُمْ ، فَأَيْنَمَا لَقِيتُمُوهُمْ فَاقْتُلُوهُمْ ، فَإِنَّ قَتْلَهُمْ أَجْرٌ لِمَنْ قَتَلَهُمْ يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ " .
Suwaid bin Ghaflah says that Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) once said: When I narrate to you a hadith from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), then falling from the sky is more beloved to me than attributing a lie to him, and when I say something from someone else, then I am a warrior, and war is nothing but strategy and trickery. I heard the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) say: "Near the Day of Judgment, there will emerge such people whose ages will be young and whose intellects will be foolish. They will speak the words of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), but faith will not go beyond their throats. Wherever you find them, kill them, for killing them will be a source of reward on the Day of Judgment."
Hadith 913
(حديث مرفوع) حَدَّثَنَا ابْنُ نُمَيْرٍ ، حَدَّثَنَا الْأَعْمَشُ ، عَنْ أَبِي إِسْحَاقَ ، عَنْ عَاصِمِ بْنِ ضَمْرَةَ ، عَنْ عَلِيٍّ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ ، عَنِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ : " قَدْ عَفَوْتُ لَكُمْ عَنِ الْخَيْلِ وَالرَّقِيقِ ، وَلَيْسَ فِيمَا دُونَ مِائَتَيْنِ زَكَاةٌ " .
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "I have exempted you from zakat on horses and slaves (therefore, you must pay zakat on silver in any case), and there is no zakat on less than two hundred dirhams."
Hadith 914
(حديث مرفوع) حَدَّثَنَا ابْنُ نُمَيْرٍ ، حَدَّثَنَا الْأَعْمَشُ ، عَنْ سَعْدِ بْنِ عُبَيْدَةَ ، عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ ، عَنْ عَلِيٍّ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ ، قَالَ : قُلْتُ : يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ، مَا لِي أَرَاكَ تَنَوَّقُ فِي قُرَيْشٍ وَتَدَعُنَا ؟ قَالَ : " وعِنْدَكَ شَيْءٌ ؟ " ، قُلْتُ : بِنْتُ حَمْزَةَ ، قَالَ : " هِيَ بِنْتُ أَخِي مِنَ الرَّضَاعَةِ " .
Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: I once submitted in the presence of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him): O Messenger of Allah! Why do you prefer other families of the Quraysh over us? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Do you also have something?" I replied: Yes! The daughter of Sayyiduna Hamza (may Allah be pleased with him). He said: "She is my foster niece." (In fact, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and Sayyiduna Amir Hamza (may Allah be pleased with him) were foster brothers as well as uncle and nephew.)
Hadith 915
(حديث مرفوع) حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ سَلَمَةَ ، عَنْ ابْنِ إِسْحَاقَ ، عَنْ أَبَانَ بْنِ صَالِحٍ ، عَنْ عِكْرِمَةَ ، قَالَ : أَفَضْتُ مَعَ الْحُسَيْنِ بْنِ عَلِيٍّ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ مِنَ الْمُزْدَلِفَةِ ، فَلَمْ أَزَلْ أَسْمَعُهُ يُلَبِّي حَتَّى رَمَى جَمْرَةَ الْعَقَبَةِ ، فَسَأَلْتُهُ ، فَقَالَ : أَفَضْتُ مَعَ أَبِي مِنَ الْمُزْدَلِفَةِ ، فَلَمْ أَزَلْ أَسْمَعُهُ يُلَبِّي حَتَّى رَمَى جَمْرَةَ الْعَقَبَةِ ، فَسَأَلْتُهُ فَقَالَ : أَفَضْتُ مَعَ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ مِنَ الْمُزْدَلِفَةِ ، فَلَمْ أَزَلْ أَسْمَعُهُ " يُلَبِّي حَتَّى رَمَى جَمْرَةَ الْعَقَبَةِ " .
Ikrimah says that I returned from Muzdalifah with Sayyiduna Imam Hussain (may Allah be pleased with him), and I heard him continuously reciting the Talbiyah until he had stoned Jamrah Aqabah. I asked him about this, and he said: I had returned from Muzdalifah with my father, and I heard him also continuously reciting the Talbiyah until he had stoned Jamrah Aqabah. I asked him about this, and he said: I had returned from Muzdalifah with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and I heard the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) continuously reciting the Talbiyah until he had stoned Jamrah Aqabah.
Hadith 916
(حديث مرفوع) حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ فُضَيْلٍ ، عَنْ عَطَاءِ بْنِ السَّائِبِ ، عَنْ مَيْسَرَةَ ، قَالَ : رَأَيْتُ عَلِيًّا رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ يَشْرَبُ قَائِمًا ، قَالَ : فَقُلْتُ لَهُ : تَشْرَبُ قَائِمًا ؟ ! فَقَالَ : " إِنْ أَشْرَبْ قَائِمًا ، فَقَدْ رَأَيْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَشْرَبُ قَائِمًا ، وَإِنْ أَشْرَبْ قَاعِدًا ، فَقَدْ رَأَيْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَشْرَبُ قَاعِدًا " .
Maisarah (may Allah have mercy on him) says: I saw that on one occasion, Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) drank water while standing. I said to him, "You are drinking water while standing?" He replied: "If I have drunk water while standing, it is because I saw the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) do so, and if I have drunk while sitting, I have seen him do that as well."
Hadith 917
(حديث مرفوع) حَدَّثَنَا عَبْد اللَّهِ ، حَدَّثَنَا إِسْحَاقُ بْنُ إِسْمَاعِيلَ ، حَدَّثَنَا وَكِيعٌ ، حَدَّثَنَا الْأَعْمَشُ ، عَنْ أَبِي إِسْحَاقَ ، عَنْ عَبْدِ خَيْرٍ ، عَنْ عَلِيٍّ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ ، قَالَ : كُنْتُ أَرَى أَنَّ بَاطِنَ الْقَدَمَيْنِ أَحَقُّ بِالْمَسْحِ مِنْ ظَاهِرِهِمَا ، حَتَّى رَأَيْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ " يَمْسَحُ ظَاهِرَهُمَا " .
Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said: My opinion was that for wiping over the leather socks (khuffayn), the part of the socks that touches the ground is more appropriate to wipe than the part that is on top of the foot, until I saw the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) wiping over the upper part, so I abandoned my opinion.
Hadith 918
(حديث مرفوع) حَدَّثَنَا عَبْد اللَّهِ ، حَدَّثَنَا إِسْحَاقُ بْنُ إِسْمَاعِيلَ ، حَدَّثَنَا سُفْيَانُ ، عَنْ أَبِي السَّوْدَاءِ ، عَنِ ابْنِ عَبْدِ خَيْرٍ ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ ، قَالَ : رَأَيْتُ عَلِيًّا رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ تَوَضَّأَ ، فَغَسَلَ ظَهْرَ قَدَمَيْهِ ، وَقَالَ : لَوْلَا أَنِّي رَأَيْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ " يَغْسِلُ ظُهُورَ قَدَمَيْهِ " ، لَظَنَنْتُ أَنَّ بُطُونَهُمَا أَحَقُّ بِالْغَسْلِ .
Abdu Khair, may Allah have mercy on him, says that I once saw Sayyiduna Ali, may Allah be pleased with him, performing ablution. He washed the upper part of his foot and said: If I had not seen the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, washing the upper part of his foot, my opinion would have been that the lower part of the foot is more deserving of being washed (because it touches the ground more).
Hadith 919
(حديث مرفوع) حَدَّثَنَا عَبْد اللَّهِ ، حَدَّثَنَا إِسْحَاقُ بْنُ إِسْمَاعِيلَ ، حَدَّثَنَا وَكِيعٌ ، حَدَّثَنَا الْحَسَنُ بْنُ عُقْبَةَ أَبُو كِبْرَانَ ، عَنْ عَبْدِ خَيْرٍ ، عَنْ عَلِيٍّ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ ، قَالَ : " هَذَا وُضُوءُ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، ثم تَوَضَّأَ ثَلَاثًا ثَلَاثًا " .
Abdu Khair (may Allah have mercy on him) says that once Syedna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) taught us the way of ablution of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and said that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to perform ablution in this manner. In this ablution, he washed each limb three times.
Hadith 920
(حديث مرفوع) حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ فُضَيْلٍ ، حَدَّثَنَا مُغِيرَةُ ، عَنْ أُمِّ مُوسَى ، قَالَتْ : سَمِعْتُ عَلِيًّا رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ ، يَقُولُ : أَمَرَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ابْنَ مَسْعُودٍ فَصَعِدَ عَلَى شَجَرَةٍ ، أَمَرَهُ أَنْ يَأْتِيَهُ مِنْهَا بِشَيْءٍ ، فَنَظَرَ أَصْحَابُهُ إِلَى سَاقِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ مَسْعُودٍ حِينَ صَعِدَ الشَّجَرَةَ ، فَضَحِكُوا مِنْ حُمُوشَةِ سَاقَيْهِ ، فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " مَا تَضْحَكُونَ ؟ ! لَرِجْلُ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ أَثْقَلُ فِي الْمِيزَانِ يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ مِنْ أُحُدٍ " .
Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that once the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) ordered Sayyiduna Ibn Mas’ud (may Allah be pleased with him), so he climbed a tree. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) had instructed him to bring something. When the noble Companions (may Allah be pleased with them) saw Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas’ud (may Allah be pleased with him) climbing the tree, their gaze fell upon his shins. Seeing his thin shins, they began to laugh. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “Why are you laughing? Indeed, Abdullah’s one leg will be heavier on the scale of deeds on the Day of Resurrection than the mountain of Uhud.”
Hadith 921
(حديث موقوف) حَدَّثَنَا حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الرَّزَّاقِ ، أَنْبَأَنَا سُفْيَانُ ، عَنِ الْأَسْوَدِ بْنِ قَيْسٍ ، عَنْ رَجُلٍ ، عَنْ عَلِيٍّ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ ، أَنَّهُ قَالَ يَوْمَ الْجَمَلِ : إِنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ " لَمْ يَعْهَدْ إِلَيْنَا عَهْدًا نَأْخُذُ بِهِ فِي إِمَارَةِ ، وَلَكِنَّهُ شَيْءٌ رَأَيْنَاهُ مِنْ قِبَلِ أَنْفُسِنَا ، ثُمَّ اسْتُخْلِفَ أَبُو بَكْرٍ ، رَحْمَةُ اللَّهِ عَلَى أَبِي بَكْرٍ ، فَأَقَامَ وَاسْتَقَامَ ، ثُمَّ اسْتُخْلِفَ عُمَرُ رَحْمَةُ اللَّهِ عَلَى عُمَرَ ، فَأَقَامَ وَاسْتَقَامَ ، حَتَّى ضَرَبَ الدِّينُ بِجِرَانِهِ " .
On the day of the Battle of Jamal, Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said that regarding leadership, the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) did not give us any specific instruction that we should act upon; rather, it was a matter that we selected for ourselves. First, Sayyiduna Abu Bakr Siddiq (may Allah be pleased with him) became the caliph—may Allah's mercy descend upon him—he remained steadfast and established (the caliphate). Then Sayyiduna Umar Farooq (may Allah be pleased with him) became the caliph—may Allah's mercy descend upon him as well—he remained steadfast and established (the caliphate) until the religion laid its neck on the ground (i.e., it became firm and strong).
