Musnad Ahmad

It is narrated from Hazrat Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) that Barirah was married to a slave. When she was freed, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) gave her the choice regarding her affairs.

It is narrated from Hazrat Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) that when the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) passed away, he was covered with a striped Yemeni cloak.

It is narrated from Hazrat Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to say: When the time comes for a Prophet’s soul to be taken, after his soul is taken, his reward is shown to him, then it is returned and he is given the choice whether he should be returned to that reward and joined with it (or sent back to the world). I saw the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) during his illness of death, that his neck had drooped, and I heard him saying: "With those upon whom Allah has bestowed His favor, such as the Prophets, the truthful, the martyrs, and the righteous, and what a good companionship they are." I understood that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was given the choice at that moment.

It is narrated from Hazrat Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) that once the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) extended his hand to kiss me, so I said that I am fasting. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, I am also fasting. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) extended his hand towards me and kissed me.

It is narrated from Hazrat Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) that once the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) extended his hand to kiss me, so I said that I am fasting. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "I am also fasting," then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) extended his hand towards me and kissed me.

The previous hadith is also narrated through this second chain of transmission.

It is narrated from Hazrat Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said during his final illness: "Order Abu Bakr to lead the people in prayer." Hazrat Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) submitted, "O Messenger of Allah! Abu Bakr Siddiq (may Allah be pleased with him) is a soft-hearted man; he will not be able to control his tears and the people will not be able to hear his voice." But the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) again said, "Tell Abu Bakr to lead the people in prayer." When I repeated my request, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) gave the same order and said, "You are like the women who were infatuated with Yusuf (peace be upon him) (who concealed something in their hearts and expressed something else with their tongues)."

It is narrated from Hazrat Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) that at the time when the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) passed away, his head was in my lap.

It is narrated from Hazrat Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) that I always found the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) sleeping beside me at the time of suhoor (pre-dawn meal).

It is narrated from Hazrat Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to test the Muslim women who migrated to him according to the conditions of this verse in which Allah Almighty says: "O Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), when believing women come to you to pledge allegiance to you on these conditions—that they will not associate anything with Allah, will not steal, will not commit adultery, will not kill their children, will not bring any falsehood between their hands and feet, and will not disobey you in any good matter—then accept their pledge and ask Allah for forgiveness for them. Surely, Allah is Most Forgiving, Most Merciful." Hazrat Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) says that if any believing woman accepted these conditions, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) would say with his tongue, "I have accepted your pledge." By Allah, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) never took the hand of any woman in his hand for the pledge, rather he would only say, "I have accepted your pledge."

It is narrated from Hazrat Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) that I heard that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to seek refuge from the trial of the False Messiah (Dajjal) in prayer.

Narrated from Hazrat Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) that, by Allah, I have seen the time when the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was standing at the door of my chamber and the Abyssinians were displaying their feats in the courtyard. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) began to shield me with his cloak so that I could watch their feats. I was between his ears and shoulders. Then he kept standing because of me until I left. Now you can estimate how much a young girl is inclined towards play and amusement.

It is narrated from Hazrat Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Whoever invents something in our way other than this way of ours, it is rejected.

It is narrated from Hazrat Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) that Hazrat Abu Hudhaifa had made Salim—who was a freed slave of an Ansari woman—his adopted son, just as the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) had made Zaid bin Haritha his adopted son. In the time of ignorance, people used to consider an adopted son as a real son and would even grant him the right of inheritance, until Allah Almighty revealed this verse: "Call them by (the names of) their fathers; that is more just in the sight of Allah." In this context, one day Hazrat Sahla came and said, "O Messenger of Allah! We used to consider Salim our son; he lived with me and Abu Hudhaifa and would see matters of my privacy. Now Allah has revealed the command regarding adopted sons, which you also know." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "Give him five sips of your milk." After that, Salim became like her foster son. Because of this, whenever Hazrat Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) deemed it appropriate to allow someone (even if he was of older age) to enter her house, she would have him suckled by her sister or niece, and then he would come and go in her house. But Hazrat Umm Salama and the other noble wives did not allow anyone to enter their homes through this fosterage, and they used to say to Hazrat Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) that, "We do not know; perhaps this concession was only for Salim."

It is narrated from Hazrat Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) that the pure wives of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to go out to open fields at night to relieve themselves. Once, Hazrat Sawda went out to relieve herself. Since she was tall and had a heavy build (people would recognize her), on the way she met Hazrat Umar (may Allah be pleased with him). He saw Hazrat Sawda and called out to her from a distance, "Sawda! We have recognized you," and he said this hoping that the command of hijab would be revealed. Consequently, the verse of hijab was revealed.

It is narrated from Hazrat Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) declared the lizard to be harmful, but I did not hear him order the killing of the lizard.

It is narrated from Hazrat Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) that once the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) came to me and a Jewish woman was sitting with me, and she was saying, "Do you know that you will be tested in your graves?" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) turned towards us and said, "Only the Jews will be subjected to trial." After some time had passed, one day the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to me, "Did you know that revelation has come to me that you will be tested in your graves?" After that, I always heard the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) seeking refuge from the punishment of the grave.

It is narrated from Hazrat Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) that the brother of Abu Qais, "Aflah," sought permission from Hazrat Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) to enter the house. Hazrat Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) considered him a non-mahram and refused to grant permission. When the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) came, she mentioned it to him, saying, "O Messenger of Allah! The brother of Abu Qais, Aflah, sought permission from me to enter the house, but I refused to grant him permission." The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said, "Allow him to enter." She said, "O Messenger of Allah! The woman breastfed me, not the man." The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said, "May your hands be dusty! He is your uncle, allow him to enter."

It is narrated from Hazrat Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) that once Barirah came to her; she was a mukatabah (a slave woman who had a contract for her freedom) and had come to request help in paying her contract amount. Hazrat Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) asked her, "Do your owners want to sell you? If they wish, I will pay your contract amount, but your wala (right of inheritance) will be mine." She went to her owners and mentioned this to them. They said, "Not unless she accepts the condition that your inheritance will go to us." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to Hazrat Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her), "Buy her and set her free, for the wala (right of inheritance) belongs only to the one who sets the slave free." Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) stood up and said, "What is wrong with people that they stipulate conditions which are not in the Book of Allah? Whoever stipulates a condition that is not permitted in the Book of Allah, it has no validity, even if he stipulates it a hundred times. The condition of Allah is more deserving and stronger."

It is narrated from Hazrat Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) would observe i'tikaf and would extend his head out from the mosque, and I, sitting in my room, would wash it while I was menstruating.

It is narrated from Hazrat Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) that once the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) delayed the Isha prayer, until Hazrat Umar Farooq (may Allah be pleased with him) called out and said that the women and children have fallen asleep. So the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) came out and said: "There is no one among the people of the earth at this time who is offering this prayer except you, and at this time, no one except the people of Madinah is offering this prayer." This was before the spread of Islam.

It is narrated from Hazrat Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) that in Makkah Mukarramah, the initial obligation of prayer was in the form of two rak'ahs each, except for Maghrib, which was three rak'ahs. Then Allah made Dhuhr and Isha complete in residence, and in travel, the initial obligation was maintained.

It is narrated from Hazrat Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) that once the freed slave woman of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), Salma—who was the wife of the Prophet’s freed slave Abu Rafi’—came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and said that Abu Rafi’ had beaten her. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked Abu Rafi’, “O Abu Rafi’! Did you have a dispute with her?” Abu Rafi’ said, “O Messenger of Allah! She caused me distress.” The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, “Salma! What distress did you cause him?” Salma said, “O Messenger of Allah! I did not cause him any distress. However, while he was praying, his ablution broke, so I said to him, ‘O Abu Rafi’! The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) has commanded the Muslims that if anyone passes wind, he should perform ablution.’ Just on this matter, he stood up and started beating me.” The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) began to laugh at this and said, “O Abu Rafi’! She only told you something good.”

It is narrated from Hazrat Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: The virtue of the prayer performed with miswak is seventy times greater than the prayer performed without miswak.

It is narrated from Hazrat Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) that once we were returning from a journey with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). When we were a few miles away from Madinah, in an area called "Turban" where there was no water, at the time of suhoor, my necklace broke and fell off my neck. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) stopped to search for it. There, dawn broke and the people had no water. Only Allah knows the reproaches I heard from my father, that because of you, Muslims have to face hardship and trouble on every journey. After a while, Allah revealed the concession of tayammum, and the people performed tayammum and offered prayer. Seeing this concession, my father said to me, "Daughter! By Allah, I did not know that you are so blessed. Because of your stopping, Allah sent so much ease and blessing for the Muslims."

It is narrated from Hazrat Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) that when the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) wanted to sleep or eat in a state requiring ghusl, he would perform ablution as for prayer.

It is narrated from Hazrat Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Speak the truth, bring people closer to one another, and give glad tidings. Remember! None of you will enter Paradise because of his deeds, and know that the most beloved deed to Allah is that which is done consistently, even if it is little.

It is narrated from Hazrat Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) that we recited the Talbiyah for Hajj, and when we reached the place of Sarif, my "periods" began. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) came and I was crying. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "Aisha! Why are you crying?" I replied, "My 'periods' have started. I wish I had not come for Hajj." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "Subhan Allah! This is something Allah has decreed for all the daughters of Adam (peace be upon him). You should perform all the rites, except do not perform the Tawaf of the House (Ka'bah)." When we entered Makkah Mukarramah, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "Whoever wishes to convert his Ihram to Umrah's Ihram may do so, except the one who has a sacrificial animal with him." And the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) slaughtered a cow on behalf of his wives on the tenth of Dhul-Hijjah. On the night of Batha, I became "pure" and said, "O Messenger of Allah! Will my friends return with both Hajj and Umrah, and I will return with only Hajj?" So the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) ordered Abdur Rahman bin Abi Bakr, and he took me to Tan'eem, from where I put on the Ihram for Umrah.

Urwah narrates that once Hazrat Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) said to him: People also became frightened, and according to our assumption, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was suffering from "Zaat al-Janb" (pleurisy), but the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Do you think that Allah has afflicted me with this disease? In fact, Allah will never afflict me with it. It is narrated from Hazrat Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to say: Whenever the time came for a Prophet's soul to be taken, after his soul was taken, his reward was shown to him, then it was returned and he was given the choice whether he wished to be returned to that reward (or sent back to the world). When the time of the Prophet's (peace and blessings be upon him) passing drew near, the last words I heard from his mouth were: "With the Highest Companion in Paradise." I remembered what the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) had said, and I understood that now the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) would not prefer us in any case.

It is narrated from Hazrat Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) that on the day of the Prophet’s (peace and blessings be upon him) passing, he returned from the mosque and lay down in my lap. During this time, a member of Abu Bakr’s (may Allah be pleased with him) household came holding a fresh green miswak. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) looked at it in such a way that I understood he wished to use the miswak. I said, “O Messenger of Allah! Do you want me to give you this miswak?” The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, “Yes!” I took it, chewed it to soften it, and presented it to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used the miswak in such an excellent manner as I had seen him do before. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) put it aside. I felt that the Prophet’s (peace and blessings be upon him) body was becoming heavy. I looked at his face and saw that his gaze was raised upwards and he was saying, “With the Highest Companion in Paradise.” I said, “You have been given the choice. By the One who sent you with the truth, you have chosen it.” And on that very day, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) passed away.

It is narrated from Hazrat Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) passed away between my neck and chest, and on the day of my turn. In this, I did not wrong anyone, but it was my foolishness and youth that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) passed away in my lap, and then I lifted his head and placed it on a pillow, and I myself joined the women in weeping and began to strike my face with my hands.

It is narrated from Hazrat Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) that we women did not know where the burial of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) would take place, until after the night of Tuesday had begun, in the last part of the night, we heard the sounds of people passing by.

It is narrated from Hazrat Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) that when the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was afflicted with his final illness, he would repeatedly cover his blessed face with a sheet. When he felt discomfort, we would remove the sheet from his face. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was saying, "May Allah's curse be upon the Jews and Christians; they made the graves of their prophets (peace be upon them) places of prostration." Hazrat Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) says that in fact, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was warning people against this action so that they would not fall into it.

Rabah says that I asked Muammar, "Did the Prophet (peace be upon him) pass away while sitting?" He replied, "Yes."

It is narrated from Hazrat Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) that the last will of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was that two religions should not be allowed to remain in the Arabian Peninsula (there should be only one religion, and that is Islam).

It is narrated from Abdullah bin Abbas and Aisha (may Allah be pleased with them) that when the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was afflicted with his final illness, he would repeatedly cover his blessed face with a sheet. When he felt discomfort, we would remove the sheet from his face. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was saying: "May Allah's curse be upon the Jews and the Christians; they made the graves of their prophets places of prostration." Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) said that in fact, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was warning people against their actions so that they would not fall into the same practice.

It is narrated from Hazrat Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) that once, on the occasion of the Battle of Dhat, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) led the people in the prayer of fear (Salat al-Khawf) in such a way that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) divided the people into two groups. One group formed rows behind the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and the other group went and stood facing the enemy. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said the takbir, and those who were standing behind also said the takbir. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) performed ruku, and they also performed ruku. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) performed sajdah, and they also performed sajdah. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) raised his head, and they also raised their heads. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) paused for a while, and the followers performed the second sajdah by themselves, then stood up and, walking backwards on their heels, went and stood in the place of the first group, and that group came and formed rows behind the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). They said the takbir and performed ruku by themselves. Then when the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) performed the second sajdah, they also performed sajdah with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) stood up for the second rak'ah, and they performed the second sajdah by themselves. After this, both groups together formed rows behind the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) performed ruku with them. Then all performed sajdah together, raised their heads together, and in each of these actions, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) performed them quickly and did not fall short in making them as brief as possible. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said salam, and the people also said salam, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) stood up. In this way, all the people participated in the complete prayer with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him).

It is narrated from Hazrat Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) that when I used to apply oil to the blessed head of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), I would part the hair from the top of the head and leave the forehead untouched.

It is narrated from Hazrat Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) that I heard the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) say: Whoever offers a prayer and does not recite Surah Al-Fatihah in it, his prayer is incomplete.
