Hadith of Hudhayfah ibn al-Yaman from the Prophet (peace be upon him)

225 hadith
Hadith 23320
It is narrated from Hazrat Hudhaifah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) did not pray in Bayt al-Maqdis. If the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) had prayed there, then that prayer would have become obligatory upon you as well.

Abu Tufail says that there was a minor dispute between Hazrat Hudhaifa (may Allah be pleased with him) and a companion (may Allah be pleased with him) who participated in the Pledge of Aqabah, just as happens among people. He asked, "I ask you by Allah, how many people participated in the Pledge of Aqabah?" The people said to Hazrat Hudhaifa (may Allah be pleased with him), "Since he is asking you, please tell him." He replied, "We have been informed that they were fourteen men. If you are also included among them, then their number becomes fifteen. And I swear by Allah that among them, twelve men are warriors for Allah and His Messenger in this worldly life and on the Day when witnesses will rise. And he excused three people, who said that they had not heard the announcement of the Prophet's (peace and blessings be upon him) caller and did not know what the people wanted." This is clarified in Abu Ahmad's hadith, that once, in the intense heat of summer, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) set out and told the people, "There is very little water, so no one should reach that place before me." But when the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) arrived there, he saw that some people had already reached before him. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) cursed and reproached them.

It is narrated from Hazrat Hudhaifa (may Allah be pleased with him) that after those tents, there were no tents left like the ones that were with the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) at Badr, and no one else was defended as they were defended. And whenever any people intended evil against them, something or the other would occupy them with themselves. And he said: O group of Arabs! Nowadays people are saying such things which, in the time of the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), we used to consider as "hypocrisy."

And whoever fasts for one day for the pleasure of Allah and his end comes upon this, he will also enter Paradise. And whoever gives charity for the pleasure of Allah and his end comes upon this, he will also enter Paradise.

It is narrated from Hazrat Hudhaifa (may Allah be pleased with him) that once my mother asked me, "Since when have you been associated with the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)?" I told her an approximate time. She began to scold and reproach me harshly. I said to her, "Step aside, I am going to the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him); I will perform the Maghrib prayer with him and will not leave him until he seeks forgiveness for both me and you." So I presented myself before the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and performed the Maghrib prayer with him. After that, the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) led the 'Isha prayer and then returned. I followed behind him. On the way, a man met him, and the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) began to talk with him. When he left, I started walking behind the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) heard my footsteps and asked, "Who is it?" I replied, "Hudhaifa." The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked, "What is the matter?" I narrated the whole incident. The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "May Allah forgive you and your mother." Then he said, "Did you ever see the person on earth whom I just met a little while ago?" I replied, "Why not?" The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "He was an angel who had never descended to earth before tonight. He sought permission from the Lord to come and greet me and to give the glad tidings that Hasan and Husain are the leaders of the youth of Paradise, and Fatimah is the leader of the women of Paradise."

Zirr bin Hubaish says that once I was present in the company of Hazrat Hudhaifah bin Yaman (may Allah be pleased with him). While narrating the incident of the Night of Ascension (Mi'raj), he began to mention this saying of the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him): "Then we set out from there and reached Bayt al-Maqdis, but we did not enter Bayt al-Maqdis." I said, "On that night, the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) did enter Bayt al-Maqdis and also offered prayer there." Upon hearing this, Hazrat Hudhaifah (may Allah be pleased with him) said, "O bald one! What is your name? I recognize you by your face but do not remember your name." I replied, "My name is Zirr bin Hubaish." He said, "How do you know that on that night the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) offered prayer in Bayt al-Maqdis?" I said, "The Qur'an tells us." He said, "The one who speaks according to the Qur'an is successful. Recite that verse to me." So when I recited 'Subhan alladhi asra bi'abdihi' (Glory be to Him Who took His servant by night), I did not find anywhere in it that the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) offered prayer in Bayt al-Maqdis that night. Hazrat Hudhaifah (may Allah be pleased with him) said, "O bald one! Do you find any mention of prayer in it?" I said, "No." He said, "By Allah! The Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) did not offer prayer in Bayt al-Maqdis that night. If the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) had offered prayer in Bayt al-Maqdis, then it would have become obligatory for you to pray there as it became obligatory in Baytullah. By Allah! They did not separate from Buraq until the gates of the heavens were opened for them. Then both of them saw Paradise and Hell and all the promises of the Hereafter. Then both of them returned in the same way as they had gone. Then he began to laugh until I saw his blessed teeth. Hazrat Hudhaifah (may Allah be pleased with him) further said, "People say that the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) tied Buraq so that it would not run away, whereas Allah Almighty had made the entire world of the unseen and the seen subservient to him."

It is narrated from Muhammad bin Ka'b Qarzi (may Allah have mercy on him) that a young man from among the people of Kufa asked Hudhayfah bin Yaman (may Allah be pleased with him), "O Abu Abdullah! Did you have the honor of seeing and accompanying the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him)?" He replied, "Yes, nephew!" The questioner asked, "What would you people do?" He replied, "We would put ourselves in hardship." The questioner said, "By Allah! If we had found the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him), we would not have let him walk on the ground, but would have carried him on our necks." Hudhayfah (may Allah be pleased with him) said, "Nephew! By Allah! We saw during the Battle of the Trench that the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) led us in the 'Isha prayer in the darkness of the night, then turned towards us and said, 'Who is the man who will go and find out the condition of the enemy?' The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) promised that Allah would admit him to Paradise, but no one stood up. After some part of the night had passed, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) again led us in prayer, then turned towards us and made the same announcement, and this time said, 'He will be my companion in Paradise.' Still, due to the intensity of fear, hunger, and cold, no one stood up. When no one stood up, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) called me. At that time, I had no choice but to stand. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, 'Hudhayfah (may Allah be pleased with him), go and see what the condition of the enemy is, and do not do anything new until you return to us.' So I went and entered the enemy's camp, where the winds and Allah's army were at work, and none of their pots, fires, or tents could remain in place. Seeing this, Abu Sufyan bin Harb stood up and said, 'O group of Quraysh, let every man see who is sitting with him (lest there be a spy).' At this, I grabbed the hand of the man sitting next to me and asked him, 'Who are you?' He replied, 'I am so-and-so, son of so-and-so.' Then Abu Sufyan said, 'O group of Quraysh, by Allah! It is no longer possible for you to remain here. The livestock are perishing, Banu Qurayza have broken their promise to us, and we are facing unpleasant circumstances from their side, and you can see for yourselves the situation caused by this wind: no pot can remain in place, no fire can stay lit, and the tents cannot remain standing. Therefore, my opinion is that you should return, and I myself am going back.' Saying this, he went to his horse, which was tied with a rope, mounted it, and spurred it on. It jumped three times, but when he released the rope, it stood still. If the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) had not instructed me not to do anything new until I returned to him, I would have wanted to shoot my arrow and kill him. Then I returned to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), who at that time was standing in prayer in a cloak made from the hair of one of his noble wives. When he saw me, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) called me into his tent and covered me with a corner of his cloak. Then he bowed and prostrated while I remained in the tent. When he finished the prayer, I told the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) everything, and when Banu Ghatafan learned what Quraysh had done, they too returned to their own area.

It is narrated from Hazrat Hudhaifa (may Allah be pleased with him) that once the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) remained in his house and did not come outside, and we began to think that now the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) would not come out. When the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) came out, he performed such a long prostration that we began to fear that perhaps the soul of the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) had departed. When he raised his head, he said: My Lord consulted me regarding my Ummah, asking what should I do with them? I submitted: O Lord! Whatever You wish, they are Your creation and Your servants. Then He consulted me again and gave me the glad tidings that among my Ummah, the first to enter Paradise will be seventy thousand people, and with every thousand, there will be seventy thousand more, who will have no reckoning. Then my Lord sent me this message: Pray, your prayer will be accepted; ask, you will be granted. I asked the messenger: Will my Lord grant me upon my request? The messenger replied: He has sent me to you with the intention of giving. Then my Lord granted me, and I do not boast over it; He forgave my past and future sins while I am alive and well. He accepted my request that my Ummah will not be destroyed by famine, nor will anyone overpower them. He also granted me the Pond of Kawthar, which is a river of Paradise and flows into my pond. He granted me honor, help, and awe, which runs ahead of my Ummah at a distance of one month's journey. He also granted me the honor that I will be the first Prophet to enter Paradise. For me and my Ummah, the spoils of war were made lawful, and many of the strict commands that were upon the people before us were made lawful for us, and no hardship was placed upon us.

It is narrated from Hazrat Abu Musa (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: I repent to Allah a hundred times every day.

It is narrated from Hazrat Hudhaifa (may Allah be pleased with him) that in manners and character, the one who most closely resembled the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) was Hazrat Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him). From the time he left his house until he returned, I do not know what he did inside his house. Shaqiq says that once we went to Hazrat Hudhaifa (may Allah be pleased with him) and asked him to tell us of a person who was closest to the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) in manners and character, so that we could learn these ways from him and listen to his words. He replied that in manners and character, the one who was closest to the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) was Hazrat Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him), to the extent that he would sit in his house hiding from me, even though the trusted companions of the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) knew that Hazrat Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) was the closest to the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) among all of them.

I recognize you by face but do not remember your name." I replied, "My name is Zirr bin Hubaish." He said, "How do you know that on that night the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) offered prayer in Bayt al-Maqdis?" I said, "The Qur'an tells us." He said, "The one who speaks according to the Qur'an is successful. Recite that verse to me." So when I recited 'Subhanalladhi asra bi'abdihi...' I did not find anywhere in it that the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) offered prayer in Bayt al-Maqdis that night. If the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) had offered prayer in Bayt al-Maqdis that night, then it would have become obligatory for you to pray there as it happened with Baytullah. By Allah! Both of them did not part from Buraq until the gates of the heavens were opened for them.

It is narrated from Hazrat Hudhaifa (may Allah be pleased with him) that once I prayed with the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) would say "Subhana Rabbiyal Azeem" in his bowing (ruku) and "Subhana Rabbiyal A'la" in his prostration (sajda), and whenever he passed by a verse of mercy, he would pause and supplicate, and whenever he passed by a verse of punishment, he would pause and seek refuge from it.

I knew this at the very time when the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) was still alive. However, a time will come when a person will be a believer in the morning and by evening he will have no faith left, or he will be a believer in the evening and by morning he will have nothing left. The Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) led them in one rak’ah, then these people walked backwards to the place of those who were standing facing the enemy, and those people came and stood behind the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) in their place. The Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) then led them in the second rak’ah, and then the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) said the salam (ending the prayer). Rabi’ says that once Uqbah bin Amr said to Hudhayfah (may Allah be pleased with him), “Why do you not narrate to us any hadith you heard from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)?” He replied, “I heard the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) say: When the Dajjal appears, he will have with him water and fire. What people will see as fire will actually be cool water, and what they will see as water will actually be burning fire. Whoever among you encounters him should plunge into what appears to be fire, for it will be sweet and cool water.” Hudhayfah (may Allah be pleased with him) says, “I heard the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) say: In earlier times, the Angel of Death came to a man to seize his soul and asked him, ‘Have you ever done any good deed?’ He replied, ‘I do not know.’ The angel said, ‘Think about it.’ He said, ‘I do not know of any good deed except that I used to trade with people and would give respite to the one in difficulty and overlook (his debt).’ Allah Almighty admitted him to Paradise.” And I heard the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) say: “When the time of death approached a man, he said to his family, ‘When I die, burn me in fire, then crush my ashes, and on a windy day scatter my ashes in the air.’ When he died, his family did as he had asked. Allah gathered him in His power and asked, ‘What made you do this?’ He replied, ‘Your fear.’ Allah said, ‘I have forgiven you.’”

Hadith 23354
It is narrated from Hazrat Hudhaifah bin Yaman (may Allah be pleased with him) that nothing prevented me from participating in the Battle of Badr. In fact, I set out with my father Husail, but on the way, the disbelievers of Quraysh captured us and said, "Are you going to Muhammad (peace be upon him)?" We said, "Our intention is only to go to Madinah Munawwarah." They took a promise and a strong oath from us that after reaching Madinah, we would not support him in battle. We reached the service of the Noble Prophet (peace be upon him) and informed him of the entire matter. The Noble Prophet (peace be upon him) said, "Both of you return; we will fulfill their promise and seek help from Allah against them."

It is narrated from Hazrat Hudhaifa (may Allah be pleased with him) that once he presented himself before the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: I was performing prayer when suddenly I heard a man saying: O Allah! All praise is for You, all sovereignty is for You, all kinds of goodness are in Your hand, all matters return to You, whether apparent or hidden. You alone are worthy of being praised. Surely, You have power over all things. O Allah! Forgive all the sins that I have committed, and in whatever part of life remains, protect me from sins, and grant me the ability to perform such righteous deeds with which You become pleased. The Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) said: That was an angel who came to teach you the praise of your Lord.

It is narrated from Hazrat Hudhaifah bin Yaman (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) once held the calf of my or his own leg and said: The place for tying the lower garment is up to here. If you do not accept this, then let it hang a little below this. If you do not accept even this, then below the ankles the lower garment has no right.

Abdur Rahman bin Abi Laila says that once I went out towards a village with Hazrat Hudhaifa (may Allah be pleased with him). He asked for water, so a farmer brought water in a silver vessel. Hazrat Hudhaifa (may Allah be pleased with him) struck the vessel on his face. We signaled to each other to remain silent, because if we had asked him, he would never have told us about it. So we remained silent. After a while, he himself said, "Do you know why I struck that vessel on his face?" We replied, "No." He said, "I had forbidden him before as well (but he did not refrain)." Then he told us that the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "Do not drink from gold and silver vessels, and do not wear silk and brocade, for these things are for the disbelievers in this world and for you in the Hereafter."
