Hadith 18587
It is narrated from Hazrat Bara’ (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: When you come to your bed, say like this: O Allah, I have submitted myself to You, turned my face towards You, entrusted my affairs to You, and relied on You alone for support. My desire is for You, and I fear You. There is no refuge or sanctuary except with You. I have believed in Your Book which You have revealed and in Your Prophet whom You have sent. If the one who says these words dies that night, he will die upon the natural faith. The previous hadith is also narrated through this second chain. However, at the end of this narration, there is this addition: The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Perform ablution as you do for prayer, and say these words at the very end. I repeated these words before the Noble Prophet. When I reached “I have believed in Your Book which You have revealed,” I said, “and in Your Messenger.” The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: No, say “and in Your Prophet.”

Ali ibn Ishaq narrated to us, Abdullah ibn Mubarak informed us, Sufyan informed us, from Mansur, from Sa'd ibn Ubaydah, and he mentioned with his chain and its meaning, and said: "Perform ablution as you do for prayer." And he said: "Make these the last words you speak." He said: So I repeated it to the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, and when I reached: "I believe in Your Book which You have revealed," I said: "And in Your Messenger." He said: "No, but say: 'And in Your Prophet whom You have sent.'"

It is narrated from Hazrat Bara bin Azib (may Allah be pleased with him) that on the occasion of the Battle of Uhud, the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) appointed Hazrat Abdullah bin Jubair (may Allah be pleased with him) over fifty archers and stationed them at a place, saying: "If you see us in such a state that birds are snatching us away, even then do not move from your place until I send a message to you. And if you see us prevailing over the enemy and trampling them, even then do not move from your place until I send a message to you."

So, in the battle, the polytheists were defeated. By Allah! I saw women climbing the mountains swiftly, their shins and anklets were visible, and they had lifted up their clothes. Seeing this, the companions of Hazrat Abdullah bin Jubair (may Allah be pleased with him) began to say, "O people! Booty, your companions have prevailed, so what are you waiting for?" Hazrat Abdullah bin Jubair (may Allah be pleased with him) said, "Are you forgetting what the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) told you?" They said, "We will surely go to them so that we may also collect the booty." When they reached them, they were attacked from behind and were defeated and fled. This was the time when the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) kept calling them from behind, but no one remained with the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) except twelve men, and seventy of our men were martyred.

On the occasion of the Battle of Badr, the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and his companions (may Allah be pleased with them) inflicted a loss of one hundred and forty men on the polytheists, of whom seventy were killed and seventy were captured. At that time, the commander of the polytheists, Abu Sufyan, after gaining victory, asked three times, "Is Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) among the people?" But the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade the companions (may Allah be pleased with them) from answering. Then he asked twice each about Hazrat Abu Bakr Siddiq (may Allah be pleased with him) and Hazrat Umar Farooq (may Allah be pleased with him) by name, and then, turning to his companions, said, "All of them have been killed, and now you are rid of them." At this, Hazrat Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) could not restrain himself and said, "By Allah! O enemy of Allah! You are lying. All those whose names you have mentioned are alive, and now you have received distressing news."

Abu Sufyan said, "This is the revenge for the Battle of Badr, and war is like a bucket (that turns by turns). You will see some of your people with their limbs cut off. I did not order this, but I did not dislike it either." Then he began to chant slogans of "Glory to Hubal." The Holy Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "Why do you not answer him?" The companions (may Allah be pleased with them) asked, "O Messenger of Allah! What should we say?" The Holy Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "Say: Allah is Most High and Most Great." Then Abu Sufyan said, "We have Uzza, but you have no Uzza." The Holy Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "Why do you not answer him?" The companions (may Allah be pleased with them) asked, "O Messenger of Allah! What should we say?" The Holy Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "Say: Allah is our Protector, but you have no protector."

It is narrated from Hazrat Bara’ (may Allah be pleased with him) that I had the honor of offering prayer with the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). I found his standing (qiyam), the pause after bowing (ruku’), prostration (sajdah), the sitting between the two prostrations, the final sitting (qa’dah akheerah), and the interval between turning for salam and returning to be almost equal in duration.

And if you see us prevailing over the enemy and trampling them, even then do not move from your place until I send a message to you." But when they saw the spoils of war, they said, "People! Spoils of war!" Hazrat Abdullah bin Jubair (may Allah be pleased with him) said, "Are you forgetting what the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) told you?" They did not listen to him. Thus, this verse was revealed: "When you saw the things you desired, you began to disobey," meaning when you saw the spoils of war and the defeat of the enemy, you did not obey the command of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him).

It is narrated from Hazrat Bara’ (may Allah be pleased with him) that once we were going with the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) when his gaze fell upon some people. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked, “Why are these people gathered here?” It was informed that they were digging a grave. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) quickly moved ahead of his companions until he reached near the grave and leaned over it. I too hurried forward to see what the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was doing. There, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was weeping so much that the soil became wet with his tears. Then, turning towards us, he said, “Brothers! Prepare for this day.”

Muhammad bin Malik (may Allah have mercy on him) says that once I saw a gold ring on the hand of Hazrat Bara’ (may Allah be pleased with him). People were saying to him, “Why are you wearing a gold ring when the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) has prohibited it?” He replied, “Once we were present with the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). In front of him was a heap of war booty which the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was distributing. Among them were captives and ordinary things as well. The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) distributed all those things until only this ring remained. The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) raised his gaze and looked at his companions, then lowered his eyes. This happened three times. Then the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) called me by name. I came and sat before the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) took that ring and, holding the part of my little finger near the joint, said, ‘Take this and wear it. Whatever Allah and His Messenger make you wear, wear it.’ So how can you tell me to take it off when the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to me that whatever Allah and His Messenger make you wear, wear it?”

It is narrated from Hazrat Bara (may Allah be pleased with him) that in the early days of Islam, if a person fasted and fell asleep before breaking his fast at the time of iftar, then he could not eat or drink anything that night and until the next evening. One day, a certain Ansari was fasting. At the time of iftar, he came to his wife and asked, "Do you have anything to eat?" She replied, "No, but I will go and look for something." In the meantime, he fell asleep. When his wife came and saw him, she said, "You have suffered a loss." The next day, when only half the day had passed, he (unable to bear the hunger and thirst) fainted. This was mentioned before the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and on this occasion, this verse was revealed: "It is made lawful for you to be intimate with your wives during the nights of fasting..." The previous hadith is also narrated through this second chain.

It is narrated from Hazrat Bara’ (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was wearing a red garment. I have not seen anyone more handsome than him. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and his hair would reach his shoulders.

Hadith 18614
It is narrated from Hazrat Bara’ (may Allah be pleased with him) that once we went out with the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) for the funeral of an Ansari. When we reached near the grave, the lahd (niche) had not yet been prepared, so the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) sat down and we also sat around him. It felt as if birds were sitting on our heads. In the blessed hand of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was a stick with which he was scratching the ground. Then he raised his head and said, “Seek refuge with Allah from the punishment of the grave,” and he said this two or three times. Then he said: “When a believing servant is about to depart from this world and move to the Hereafter, angels with bright faces come to him from the heavens. They bring with them a shroud from Paradise and perfume from Paradise, and they sit as far as the eye can see. Then the Angel of Death comes and sits by his head and says, ‘O good soul! Come out to Allah’s forgiveness and pleasure.’ So his soul comes out flowing just as a drop of water flows from the mouth of a water-skin. The Angel of Death takes it, and the other angels do not leave it in his hand even for the blink of an eye; rather, they take it from him and wrap it in that shroud and apply the perfume they have brought. From it comes a fragrance like the best musk found on earth. Then the angels ascend with that soul, and whenever they pass by a group of angels, they ask, ‘Who is this pure soul?’ They reply with the best name by which he was called in the world, until they reach the lowest heaven and ask for the gate to be opened. When it is opened, every group of angels at each heaven accompanies him to the next, until they reach the seventh heaven. Then Allah Almighty says, ‘Record the book of My servant in Illiyyin and return him to the earth, for I created them from it, into it I shall return them, and from it I shall bring them forth again.’ So his soul is returned to his body. Then two angels come to him, make him sit up, and ask, ‘Who is your Lord?’ He replies, ‘My Lord is Allah.’ They ask, ‘What is your religion?’ He replies, ‘My religion is Islam.’ They ask, ‘Who is this man who was sent among you?’ He replies, ‘He is Allah’s Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him).’ They ask, ‘What is your knowledge?’ He replies, ‘I read Allah’s Book, believed in it, and affirmed it.’ Then a caller from the heavens proclaims, ‘My servant has spoken the truth. Spread out for him a bed from Paradise, clothe him from Paradise, and open for him a door to Paradise.’ So its breezes and fragrances come to him, and his grave is expanded for him as far as the eye can see. Then a man with a beautiful face and fine fragrance comes to him and says, ‘Rejoice in what you have been promised. This is the day you were promised.’ He asks, ‘Who are you? Your face brings good news.’ He replies, ‘I am your righteous deeds.’ Then he says, ‘O Lord! Establish the Hour so that I may return to my family and wealth.’

And when a disbelieving person is about to depart from this world and move to the Hereafter, angels with dark faces descend from the heavens, bringing with them sackcloth. They sit as far as the eye can see. Then the Angel of Death comes and sits by his head and says, ‘O wicked soul! Come out to Allah’s wrath and anger.’ Hearing this, his soul disperses within his body, and the Angel of Death pulls it out as a skewer is pulled out from wet wool, and he seizes it. The angels do not leave it in his hand even for the blink of an eye, but wrap it in that sackcloth, and from it comes a foul stench like the worst dead flesh on earth. Then they ascend with it, and whenever they pass by a group of angels, they say, ‘What is this wicked soul?’ They reply with the worst name by which he was called in the world, until they reach the lowest heaven and ask for the gate to be opened, but it is not opened for him. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) recited this verse: “The gates of heaven will not be opened for them, nor will they enter Paradise until the camel passes through the eye of a needle...”

Then he said: "Indeed, when the believer is approaching the Hereafter and departing from the world, angels descend upon him, their faces as if they were the sun, with each one carrying a shroud and embalmment. They sit from him as far as the eye can see, until when his soul departs, every angel between the heavens and the earth, and every angel in the heavens, prays for him. The gates of heaven are opened for him; there is not a gatekeeper except that they call upon Allah that his soul may ascend from their direction. When his soul is taken up, they say: 'Lord, this is Your servant, so-and-so.' He says: 'Return him, for I have promised them that from it I created them, and into it I shall return them, and from it I shall bring them forth once again.'" He said: "He hears the footsteps of his companions as they turn away from him. Then someone comes to him and says: 'Who is your Lord? What is your religion? Who is your Prophet?' He says: 'My Lord is Allah, my religion is Islam, and my Prophet is Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him.' He is rebuked and asked again: 'Who is your Lord? What is your religion? Who is your Prophet?' This is the last trial presented to the believer. That is when Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, says: 'Allah keeps firm those who believe with the firm word in the worldly life and in the Hereafter' [Surah Ibrahim, Ayah 27]. He says: 'My Lord is Allah, my religion is Islam, and my Prophet is Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him.' It is said to him: 'You have spoken the truth.' Then someone comes to him, handsome of face, pleasant of scent, well-dressed, and says: 'Rejoice in the honor from Allah and everlasting bliss.' He says: 'And you, may Allah give you good news of goodness. Who are you?' He says: 'I am your righteous deeds. By Allah, you were quick in obeying Allah, slow in disobeying Allah, so may Allah reward you with good.' Then a door to Paradise is opened for him, and a door to the Fire, and it is said: 'This would have been your place had you disobeyed Allah, but Allah has replaced it for you with this.' When he sees what is in Paradise, he says: 'My Lord, hasten the coming of the Hour so that I may return to my family and my wealth.' It is said to him: 'Rest.' And indeed, when the disbeliever is departing from the world and approaching the Hereafter, harsh and severe angels descend upon him, and they snatch his soul as a many-pronged iron comb is pulled through wet wool, and his soul is pulled out along with the veins. Every angel between the heavens and the earth, and every angel in the heavens, curses him. The gates of heaven are closed; there is not a gatekeeper except that they call upon Allah that his soul not ascend from their direction. When his soul is taken up, they say: 'Lord, so-and-so, son of so-and-so, Your servant.' He says: 'Return him, for I have promised them that from it I created them, and into it I shall return them, and from it I shall bring them forth once again.'" He said: "He hears the footsteps of his companions as they turn away from him." He said: "Then someone comes to him and says: 'Who is your Lord? What is your religion? Who is your Prophet?' He says: 'I do not know.' It is said to him: 'You did not know, nor did you recite.' Then someone comes to him, ugly of face, ugly of clothes, foul of scent, and says: 'Receive the tidings of humiliation from Allah and everlasting punishment.' He says: 'And you, may Allah give you tidings of evil. Who are you?' He says: 'I am your evil deeds. You were slow in obeying Allah, quick in disobeying Allah, so may Allah reward you with evil.' Then there is appointed for him one who is blind, deaf, and dumb, in his hand a sledgehammer, which if it were to strike a mountain, it would become dust. He strikes him a blow until he becomes dust, then Allah restores him as he was, and he strikes him another blow, and he screams a scream that everything hears except the two heavy beings (humankind and jinn)." Al-Bara' ibn Azib said: "Then a door to the Fire is opened for him, and bedding from the Fire is spread for him."

Abdullah said: And it was narrated to us by Abu al-Rabi', narrated to us by Hammad ibn Zayd, from Yunus ibn Khabbab, from al-Minhal ibn Amr, from Zadhan, from al-Bara' ibn Azib, the like of it.

It is narrated from Hazrat Bara’ (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to walk from one end of the row to the other, straightening the chests and shoulders of the worshippers, and he used to say: "Do not move forward or backward, otherwise differences will arise in your hearts." And he used to say: "Allah Almighty sends mercy upon those in the first rows, and the angels continue to supplicate for mercy for them."

Hadith 18622
It is narrated from Hazrat Bara bin Azib (may Allah be pleased with him) that once we were on a journey with the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). We reached a well in which only a little water was left. Six men, including myself among the seven, went down into it. Then buckets were lowered. The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was also present at the edge of the well. We poured about half or two-thirds of the water into them and presented it before the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). I checked my vessel thoroughly to see if I could get enough water to quench my thirst, but I could not find any. Then the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) put his hand into that bucket and recited some words "which Allah willed." After that, the bucket was returned to us (when it was poured into the well, we were still inside the well). I saw my last companion being pulled out by his clothes so that he would not drown, and the water had become abundant.
