It is narrated from Abdullah bin Malik (may Allah have mercy on him) that the sister of Hazrat Uqbah bin Amir (may Allah be pleased with him) had vowed to perform Hajj on foot. Hazrat Uqbah (may Allah be pleased with him) asked the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) about this, so the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: Instruct her to go riding. Uqbah (may Allah be pleased with him) thought that perhaps the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) had not fully understood the matter, so after being alone once again, he repeated his question. But the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) gave the same instruction as before and said: Allah has no need for your sister to put herself in torment.

It is narrated from Hazrat Uqbah bin Aamir (may Allah be pleased with him) that once I was walking ahead of the Prophet’s (peace and blessings be upon him) mount on a path, when suddenly the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to me, "O Uqbah! Why don’t you ride?" But I thought of the greatness of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), that how could I ride on his mount. After a little while, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) again said, "O Uqbah! Why don’t you ride?" This time I feared that perhaps this might be considered disobedience, so when the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) dismounted, I mounted, and after going a short distance, I dismounted. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) mounted again and said, "O Uqbah! Shall I not teach you two surahs which are better than all the surahs that people recite?" I said, "Why not, O Messenger of Allah! (peace and blessings be upon him)" So the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) taught me Surah Al-Falaq and Surah An-Naas. Then the prayer was established, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) went forward and recited these two surahs in the prayer. Then, passing by me, he said, "O Uqbah! What do you understand? Recite these two surahs when you go to sleep and when you wake up."

Therefore, practice archery and horse riding, and to me, archery is more beloved than horse riding. And everything that causes a person to become heedless is falsehood, except for a man's practice with his bow, his care of his horse, and his playful interaction with his wife, for these things are true. And whoever learns the art of archery and then forgets it, he has shown ingratitude to the one who taught him.
