Musnad Ahmad 15587 — Hadith of al-Aswad ibn Sari'
(حديث مرفوع) حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ مُصْعَبٍ ، حَدَّثَنَا سَلَّامُ بْنُ مِسْكِينٍ , وَالْمُبَارَكُ , عَنِ الْحَسَنِ , عَنِ الْأَسْوَدِ بْنِ سَرِيعٍ , أَنّ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ أُتِيَ بِأَسِيرٍ , فَقَالَ : اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَتُوبُ إِلَيْكَ , وَلَا أَتُوبُ إِلَى مُحَمَّدٍ , فَقَالَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " عَرَفَ الْحَقَّ لِأَهْلِهِ " .
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Aswad bin Sari’ that once a prisoner was brought before the Prophet (ﷺ). The prisoner said, “O Allah, I repent to You, but I do not repent to Muhammad.” The Prophet (ﷺ) said, “He has recognized the right of the One who is truly deserving.”
