Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah

It is narrated from Hazrat Abdullah that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: The world will not end until Allah sends a man from my Ahl al-Bayt whose name will be in accordance with my name (referring to Hazrat Mahdi, whose name will be Muhammad bin Abdullah).

It is narrated from Hazrat Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) said: If only one day remains of (the world's) time, Allah Almighty will send a man from my Ahl al-Bayt who will fill the earth with justice just as it had been filled with oppression.

It is narrated from Hazrat Muhammad bin Sirin that it was said: Mahdi is from this Ummah, and he is the one who will lead Isa ibn Maryam in prayer.

Hazrat Auf narrates from Hazrat Muhammad bin Sirin, who said: There will be a caliph in this ummah who cannot be given superiority over Abu Bakr and Umar. (The meaning is that in the end times, the signs of piety in this ummah and the spread of justice and fairness among its people will resemble those of the two Shaykhs, otherwise the superiority of the two Shaykhs is definite.)

Hazrat Imran bin Zubyan narrates from Hakim bin Saad: Imran bin Zubyan said that when Sulaiman bin Abdul Malik assumed power, he displayed his achievements. (Imran bin Zubyan said) I said to Abi Tahiya (i.e., Hakim bin Saad), "Is this the Mahdi who is mentioned?" He replied, "No, and he does not even resemble him."

It is narrated from Hazrat Ibrahim bin Maisarah that he said: I asked Hazrat Tawus whether Umar bin Abdul Aziz was the Mahdi. He replied: He was indeed rightly guided (i.e., guided), but he was not the Mahdi, because when the Mahdi comes, the righteous person will be increased in righteousness, and the sinner will repent from sin. They will spend wealth, be strict with the officials, and show mercy to the poor.

It is narrated from Hazrat Mujahid that he said: One of the companions of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) told me that the appearance of the Mahdi will not occur until a pure soul is killed. When the pure soul is killed, those in the heavens and those on the earth will become angry with them. Then people will come to Hazrat Mahdi, and he will take them just as a bride is taken to her husband's house on her wedding night. He will fill the earth with justice and fairness, and the earth will bring forth its vegetation, and the sky will send down rain, and my Ummah will be so prosperous during his leadership that it has never been so prosperous before.
