Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah

Hazrat Ibn Masood (may Allah be pleased with him) said regarding the verse of the Holy Qur'an { وَجِیئَ یَوْمَئِذٍ بِجَہَنَّمَ } that Hell will be brought forth with seventy thousand reins, and each rein will be pulled by seventy thousand angels.

It is narrated from Hazrat Ka'b that on the Day of Resurrection, Hell will take a long breath, and every close angel and prophet will kneel down and say, "O Lord, myself, myself."

It is narrated from Hazrat Mughith that Hell breathes twice every day; every creature except jinn and humans hears it (those upon whom reckoning and punishment is due do not hear it).

It is narrated from Hazrat Salman that the fire of Hell is black, its sparks are not bright, and its flame does not extinguish. Then he, may Allah be pleased with him, recited this verse of the Holy Qur'an: { کُلَّمَا أَرَادُوا أَنْ یَخْرُجُوا مِنْہَا مِنْ غَمٍّ ، أُعِیدُوا فِیہَا وَذُوقُوا عَذَابَ الْحَرِیقِ }.

It is narrated from Hazrat Ibn Abi Al-Hazil that the fire of Hell will scorch their faces, and no flesh will remain on any bone; that flesh will fall off.

It is narrated from Hazrat Abdullah bin Amr (may Allah be pleased with him) that the people of Hell will call out { یَا مَالِکُ لِیَقْضِ عَلَیْنَا رَبُّک } for forty years they will not be answered, then they will be answered: {إِنَّکُمْ مَاکِثُونَ } then the people of Hell will say { أَخْرِجْنَا مِنْہَا ، فَإِنْ عُدْنَا فَإِنَّا ظَالِمُونَ } then they will not be answered for the duration of the age of the world, and then it will be said to them { اخْسَؤُوا فِیہَا ، وَلاَ تُکَلِّمُون } after that, nothing will come out of their mouths except screams and wails.

It is narrated from Hazrat Mughith that when a person destined for Hell is brought towards Hell, it will be said to him, "Wait, so that we may give you a gift." Then a cup filled with the venom of a snake will be brought to him. When he brings it close to his mouth, his flesh will scatter to one side and his bones to the other.

Hazrat Abu Razin (may Allah be pleased with him) regarding the verse of the Holy Qur'an { لَوَّاحَۃٌ لِلْبَشَرِ } said that its color will change until it becomes darker than the night.

Hazrat Abdullah, regarding the verse of the Holy Qur'an {إِنَّ الْمُنَافِقِینَ فِی الدَّرْکِ الأَسْفَلِ مِنَ النَّارِ }, states: The hypocrites will be bound in coffins.

Hazrat Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that the gates of Hell are are one above the other. It will be started with the lowest one first; it will be filled, and that is the lowest of the low. Then the one after it, then the one after that, until Hell is filled.

Hazrat Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Do you know what the gates of Hell are like? The people said: Yes, they are like these doors. Hazrat Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said: No, rather they are such that some of its layers are placed one above the other.

Hazrat Yahya bin Abdur Rahman bin Hatib narrates from his father that we were sitting with Hazrat Ka'b bin Ahbar (may Allah have mercy on him) in the mosque, and he was relating hadith. Hazrat Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) arrived and sat at the edge of the gathering, then called him and said, "O Ka'b, May you perish, today you have frightened us." Hazrat Ka'b replied, "By the One in Whose hand is my soul, on the Day of Resurrection the Fire will be brought near, and there will be wailing because of it, until when it comes near, it will take a breath, and due to its awe/fear all the Prophets, the truthful, and the martyrs will fall to their knees. Then every Prophet, truthful one, and martyr will say: 'O Allah, today I ask You only about myself.' And O son of Khattab! Even if you had the deeds like the Prophets, still you would fear that you might not be saved." Hazrat Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "By God, the matter is indeed very grave/difficult."

It is narrated from Hazrat Abu Darda that the people of Hell will be afflicted with hunger, then they will seek help, they will be helped with dari' (a bitter thorny plant), which will neither fill their stomachs nor make them healthy. Then they will seek help again, they will be helped with food that causes choking (which gets stuck in the throat). Then they will remember that they used to remove things stuck in the throat with a drink, so they will ask for it, then boiling hot water in iron vessels will be presented to them. When they bring it near, it will burn their faces, and when they drink it, it will cut apart all the organs of their stomachs. Then they will cry out: "Call upon your Lord that He may lighten this day of the punishment from us." and it will be answered to them: "Did not your Messengers come to you with clear proofs?" They will say: "Yes." It will be said: "Then call, but the call of the disbelievers is only in error." Then they will say, "Call upon Malik," and it will be said { یَا مَالِکُ لِیَقْضِ عَلَیْنَا رَبُّک } Malik will answer them: "Indeed, you will remain [here]." Then they will say, "Call upon your Lord, for surely no one is more merciful than your Lord." Then they will say: "Our Lord, take us out of it. And if we should return [to sin], then indeed, we are wrongdoers." and it will be answered to them: "Be gone therein and speak not to Me." Then they will be seized by destruction, ruin, and wailing.

It is narrated from Hazrat Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Weeping and wailing will be cast upon the people of Hell; they will weep so much that their tears will dry up, then they will weep blood instead of tears. Pits (like wells) will form on their faces, and if boats were set afloat on those tears, they would indeed sail.

It is narrated from Hazrat Abu Musa that the people of Hell will weep in Hell to such an extent that if boats were set afloat in their tears, they would sail. Then, after tears, they will weep blood, and they will be made to weep like it.

It is narrated from Hazrat Nu'man bin Bashir that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: The lightest punishment in Hell will be for the one who will be made to wear shoes of fire, and because of this his brain will boil like a pot boils. That person will not see anyone being punished more severely than himself, although he will be the one with the least and lightest punishment.

It is narrated from Hazrat Ubaidullah bin Umair (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: The least punishment in Hell will be for the person who will be made to wear shoes of fire, due to which his brain will boil, his ears will be of burning coal, his molars will be of burning coal, his lips will be of fire, and his heels will protrude from the soles of his feet.

It is narrated from Hazrat Abu Saeed Al-Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: The lightest punishment among the people of Hell will be for the person who will be made to wear shoes of fire, due to the heat of which his brain will boil.

It is narrated from Hazrat Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: The lightest punishment will be for Abu Talib; he will be made to wear shoes of fire.

Hazrat Nu'man bin Bashir narrates that I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ saying from the pulpit: I warn you people about the Fire, to the extent that his blessed cloak fell from one of his shoulders. Then he said: I warn you people about the Fire, to the extent that if I were at this place, I would make the people of the market hear it, or those whom Allah willed.

It is narrated from Hazrat Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: Hell complained to Allah Almighty and said, "O Allah! Some parts of me have consumed other parts." Allah Almighty allowed it two breaths: one breath in the summer and one breath in the winter. So the intense cold you experience is due to its cold, and the intense heat you experience in the summer is due to its heat.

Hazrat Abdullah, in the explanation of the verse of the Holy Qur'an { زِدْنَاہُمْ عَذَابًا فَوْقَ الْعَذَابِ }, says: "Increase the scorpions whose tails will be as long as date palm trees."

It is narrated from Hazrat Ka'b that indeed there are several furnaces in Hell, their narrowness is such as the lower part of a spear of one of you. People will be thrown into them according to their deeds.

It is narrated from Hazrat Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: Paradise and Hell argued with each other. Hell said, "In me are the arrogant, the wealthy, and the honorable people." Paradise said, "Only the weak and the poor will enter me." Allah Almighty said to Paradise: "You are the place of My mercy; I will admit into you whomever I wish." And He said to Hell: "You are the place of My punishment; I will punish with you whomever I wish, and I will fill both of you."

It is narrated from Hazrat Abu Sa'id that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: On the Day of Resurrection, a neck will emerge from Hell which will have a tongue and it will speak, saying: I have been commanded regarding three kinds of people. I have been commanded to seize those who associate others with Allah, every rebellious arrogant one (to cast them into itself), and he mentioned another category, then it will fall upon them and throw them into the torments and hardships of Hell.

It is narrated from Hazrat Mujahid that there are some pits in Hell in which there are snakes as large as Bactrian camels and scorpions like black mules. When the inhabitants of Hell run towards these pits, those snakes and scorpions will seize them by their mouths. Thus, they will not find deliverance from them except by fleeing back towards the fire.

It is narrated from Hazrat Mujahid that the people of Hell will suffer from itching, and they will scratch themselves until their bones become exposed. They will say, "O our Lord! Why has this torment been given to us?" It will be said to them, "Because of causing harm to the believers."

It is narrated from Hazrat Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that if even a single drop of Zaqqum were to be dropped into the world, the livelihood and sustenance of the people would be ruined.

It is narrated from Hasan that if a bucket of the blood of Hell were to be dropped from the sky and the people of the earth were to smell its stench, it would become difficult for them to live in the world. (The world would become corrupted.)

It is narrated from Hazrat Mujahid that indeed your fire seeks refuge from the fire of Hell.

It is narrated from Hazrat Anas that the Holy Prophet ﷺ said: If a stone the size of a pregnant she-camel is thrown into the pit of Hell, it will not reach its bottom (the end of the pit) for seventy years.

It is narrated from Hazrat Anas that the Holy Prophet ﷺ heard a sound one day and asked, "O Jibreel! What is this sound?" Hazrat Jibreel replied, "Seventy years ago, a stone was thrown into the pit of Hell; now it has reached its depth."

Hazrat Abu Saeed Khudri narrates that one day we found the Messenger of Allah ﷺ in a state of sadness, so some people said, "O Messenger of Allah ﷺ! May my parents be sacrificed for you, why do I see you like this?" The Noble Prophet ﷺ said: "I heard a sound, the like of which I had never heard before. I asked Jibreel, 'What is this?' Jibreel (peace be upon him) replied: 'Seventy years ago, a stone was thrown into the depths of Hell; today it has reached its bottom.'" Hazrat Abu Saeed Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "By the One who gave Muhammad ﷺ death, I did not see him ﷺ laughing after that day until he departed from this world."

It is narrated from Hazrat Harith that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: Many people from my Ummah will be burned in the fire of Hell, and there will also be people in my Ummah by whose intercession more people than the tribe of Mudar will enter Paradise.

Hasan, regarding the verse of the Holy Qur'an { کُلَّمَا نَضِجَتْ جُلُودُہُمْ بَدَّلْنَاہُمْ جُلُودًا غَیْرَہَا }, says that a person of Hell will be burned in the fire seventy thousand times in a day.

It is narrated from Hazrat Abu Huraira (may Allah be pleased with him) that the people of Hell will be thrown into the Fire until their lips reach their navels. They will roll about in the Fire.

It is narrated from Hazrat Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: When the people of Hell are thrown into Hell, their bodies will become extremely large and their molar tooth will be equal to the (size of) Mount Uhud.

It is narrated from Abdullah that surely, in Hell, the molar tooth of a disbeliever will be as large as the Mount Uhud.

It is narrated from Hazrat Abu Huraira (may Allah be pleased with him) that Hazrat Ibn Masood (may Allah be pleased with him) said to me: Do you know how thick the skin of a disbeliever will be? Hazrat Abu Huraira (may Allah be pleased with him) said: No. Hazrat Abdullah said: The thickness of the skin of a disbeliever will be forty-two cubits.
