Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah

Hazrat Asim Ahwal narrates that Sabeeh asked Abu Uthman Nahdi, "Did you see the time of the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him?" He replied, "Yes, I embraced Islam during the time of the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, and I sent zakat to him three times, but I did not meet him. I participated in various battles during the time of Hazrat Umar, may Allah be pleased with him. I took part in the battles of Qadisiyyah, Jalula, Tustar, Nahawand, Yarmouk, Azerbaijan, Mehran, and Rustam. We used to eat fat and would leave oil. I asked him about eating from the utensils of the polytheists, and he replied, 'We did not use to ask about them.'"

Ibrahim says that at Qadisiyyah, slaves were given shares just like free people.

Hazrat Maimoon narrates that when the delegation of Qadisiyyah arrived, Hazrat Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) did not grant them permission to meet for three days. Then, when he permitted them, he said: "You say that we fought and we defeated the enemy, whereas it is Allah who grants victory and defeat."

Hazrat Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates that I participated in the battle of Jalula and I obtained forty thousand from the spoils of war. Then I presented it to Hazrat Umar, and he asked, "What is this?" I said, "I have obtained it from the spoils of war." He said, "O Safiyyah! Take care of what Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) has brought. I swear to you, do not take anything out of it." She said, "O Commander of the Faithful! What if something is not pure?" Hazrat Umar said, "That is for you." (2) Then Hazrat Umar said to Hazrat Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both), "If I were being taken towards the fire, would you ransom me with this wealth?" He replied, "I would certainly do so, rather I would give everything I have as ransom." Then Hazrat Umar said, "In the battle of Jalula, people took care of you, pledged allegiance at your hand, and said, 'This is Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both), a companion of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him), the son of the Commander of the Faithful, and their most honored individual,' and you truly are so. They would prefer to give you a concession of a hundred dirhams rather than take one dirham more from you. I distribute, and I will give you more profit than any man of the Quraysh." Then he called the traders and sold their goods for four hundred thousand. Hazrat Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates that he gave me eighty thousand and sent three hundred and twenty thousand to Hazrat Sa'd and said, "Distribute this wealth among those Mujahideen who participated in the battle. If any of them has died, give it to his heirs."

Hazrat Sha'bi narrates that when Hazrat Sa'd conquered Jalula, the Muslims obtained spoils of war amounting to hundreds of thousands. He granted three thousand mithqals to each cavalryman and one thousand mithqals to each foot soldier.

Hazrat Aslam narrates that the spoils of Jalula were brought to Hazrat Umar, and among them were gold and silver. He was distributing the spoils among the people when one of his sons, whose name was Abdur Rahman, came and said, "O Commander of the Faithful! Please give me a ring." Hazrat Umar said to him, "Go to your mother, she will give you a drink of barley water." He did not give him anything.

Hazrat Aslam narrates that Abdullah bin Arqam was the treasurer of the Muslims’ treasury. He submitted to Hazrat Umar bin Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him), “O Commander of the Faithful! We have the jewelry of Jalula and the gold and silver vessels from there. Please give your opinion regarding them.” Hazrat Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said, “When you see me free, then inform me about this.” One day he came and said, “O Commander of the Faithful! Today you are free.” Hazrat Umar said, “Spread a mat.” A mat was spread and all that wealth was placed upon it. Hazrat Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) stood by it and said, “O Allah, You have mentioned this wealth and You have said { زُیِّنَ لِلنَّاسِ حُبُّ الشَّہَوَاتِ مِنَ النِّسَائِ وَالْبَنِینَ وَالْقَنَاطِیرِ الْمُقَنْطَرَۃِ مِنَ الذَّہَبِ وَالْفِضَّۃِ } and You have said { لِکَیْلاَ تَأْسَوْا عَلَی مَا فَاتَکُمْ ، وَلاَ تَفْرَحُوا بِمَا آتَاکُمَ }. O Allah, it is not within our power not to be pleased with that which You have adorned for us. O Allah, spend it in the path of truth and I seek Your refuge from its evil.”

Hazrat Samrah bin Jaunah Amiri narrates that during the battle of Jalula, I found a robe made of silk and embroidered with gold. I intended to sell it and placed it on my shoulder. As I passed by Hazrat Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them), he asked me if I wanted to sell this robe. I replied in the affirmative, so he asked for the price. I said three hundred dirhams. He said, "This garment of yours is not worth that much. If you wish, I will take it." I said, "I wish so," and then he took the robe.

Hazrat Sha’bi narrates that sixty lakhs came to Hazrat Umar from Jalula. He fixed an annual stipend from it.

Hazrat Hakam bin A'raj says that I asked Hazrat Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) about wiping over the leather socks (khuffain), so he said that in Jalula there was a difference of opinion between me and Hazrat Sa'd regarding this matter.

Hazrat Abu Zubyan narrates that we were with Hazrat Salman (may Allah be pleased with him) in a battle. It was either the battle of Jalula or Nahawand. A man had picked some fruit from a garden there and was distributing it among his companions. When he passed by Hazrat Salman (may Allah be pleased with him), Hazrat Salman reproached him. The man did not know Hazrat Salman, so he replied to him harshly. Someone told him that it was Hazrat Salman. Then he went to Hazrat Salman and apologized to him. Then he asked, "O Abu Abdullah! How much is permissible for us from the property of the people under protection (Ahl al-Dhimma)?" He replied, "Three things: from your blindness to your guidance, from your poverty to your sufficiency, and when you accompany any of them, eat from their food and let them eat from your food. And let him ride on your mount, and do not prevent him from going wherever he wishes."
