If a Man Makes a Salam Sale for Grain, Takes Some Grain, and Returns Some Capital—Those Who Consider This Permissible

Hazrat Saeed bin Jubair narrates that a man came to Hazrat Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them) and said: I made a sale on salam with a man for the delivery of grain for one thousand dirhams. I took half of the grain from him and sold it to him for one thousand dirhams. Then he came to me and returned half of the principal amount, that is, five hundred dirhams. What is the ruling on this? He replied: This is well-known and he will receive two rewards for it.

Hazrat Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them) says that this is well known.

Hazrat Shurayh says that there is no harm if a person takes back some of the principal amount and takes some of the goods of the Salam sale.

Hazrat Ibn Hanfiyyah says that there is no harm in it.

Hazrat Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) says that there is no harm in it.

Hazrat Ata says that there is no harm in it.

Hazrat Abu Sha’sha’ says that if someone made a salam sale of one thousand faraq in exchange for one hundred dinars, then there is no harm if he takes five hundred faraq and takes back five hundred dinars. (Faraq is the name of a measure)

Hazrat Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) says that there is no harm in it.

Hazrat Muhammad bin Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) says that there is no harm in it.

Hazrat Humaid bin Abdur Rahman says that if a man made a forward sale (salam) of a slave girl in exchange for dirhams, and then took some wheat and took back the remaining dirhams, then this is well-known and there is no harm in it.
