Making a condition in Hajj

15372 - [(1) Abu (2) Muhammad Abdullah ibn Yunus narrated to us, he said: Abu Abdur Rahman (Baqi) (3) ibn Makhlad narrated to us, he said: Abu Bakr (Abdullah ibn Muhammad ibn Abi Shaybah al-‘Absi) (4) ⦗422⦘ narrated to us, he said: Ibn Fudayl narrated to us from Hisham from his father from Dubaa‘ah who said: The Prophet ﷺ entered upon me while I was ill, and he said: "Do you intend to perform Hajj this year?" She said: I am sick, O Messenger of Allah. He said: "Perform Hajj and say: My place of exiting Ihram is wherever I am held back." (5).

Hazrat Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) says that one should say: O Allah, I intend to perform Hajj if You make it easy for me; and if one intends to perform Umrah, then one should say: O Allah! I intend to perform Umrah (if You make it easy for me); and if one does not say this, then there is no harm upon him.

It is narrated from Hazrat Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) went to Hazrat Duba’ah bint Zubair, who intended to perform Hajj. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to her: When entering into Ihram, make this condition that I will come out of Ihram from the place where You (O Allah) prevent me. Thus, this will suffice for you.

Hazrat Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) says that if you intend to perform Hajj, then say: O Allah, I intend to perform Hajj and this is my objective. Then, if Hajj becomes possible (easy) for him, he should perform Hajj, and if I am prevented due to illness (or any other reason), then Umrah is my objective.

Ibrahim narrates that I saw Alqamah place his foot in the stirrup of the mount (the place to put the foot) and supplicate in this way: O Allah! I intend to perform Hajj, so make it easy for me; otherwise, I intend to perform Umrah, so make it easy for me.

Hazrat Aswad’s mount was being taken (since he was ill and could not take it himself). When he reached the place of Jabana Arzam (Kufa) and intended to mount the ride, he supplicated thus: O Allah! I intend Hajj, if You make it easy for me, otherwise (I intend) Umrah, if You make it easy for me. Then he recited the Talbiyah for Hajj.

Hazrat Hisham states that my respected father did not approve of making a condition in Hajj.

Ibrahim states that the Companions did not make any conditions during Hajj (at the time of reciting the Talbiyah), nor did they believe in making conditions. In the narration of Hazrat Salam, there is an addition that if a person is afflicted with any illness or the like.

15380 - And Salam from Mughira from Ibrahim said: They did not stipulate conditions and did not consider the condition in it to be anything. Salam said in his narration: If a man were to be tested.

It is narrated from Ibn Sirin that Uthman saw a man who was present at Arafah, so he said to him, "Did you make a condition when reciting the Talbiyah?" He replied, "Yes."

It is narrated in the same manner from Hazrat Uthman.

Hasan and Hazrat Ata say regarding the Muhrim who makes a condition while reciting the Talbiyah, that he must act according to his condition.

It is narrated from Hazrat Amarah that Hazrat Shurayh made a condition while reciting the Talbiyah for Hajj and prayed as follows: O Allah! Surely You know my intention and also that which I have intended, so if this matter is completed for me, then it is very beloved to me, and if there is any other matter besides this, then there is no harm in it. Abu Bakr says that it has reached me that Muawiyah had retracted from this hadith.

15385 - (Abu Bakr) said (1): It has reached me that Abu Muawiyah retracted from this hadith.

Hazrat Taawoos says that making a condition in Hajj has no significance.

Hazrat Hilal bin Khabbab narrates that I asked Hazrat Saeed bin Jubair: What do you think about making a condition in Hajj? He replied: Making a condition in Hajj is among the people, (it is only to the extent of the people).

Hazrat Hakam and Hazrat Hammad say regarding stipulating a condition that it holds no significance.

Ibrahim al-Taimi says that Hazrat Alqamah used to stipulate a condition during Hajj, but he did not consider it obligatory.

Hazrat Saeed bin Jubair says that the one who makes an exception (istithna) in Hajj and the one who does not make an exception are both equal.

It is narrated from Hazrat Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) went to Hazrat Duba’ah bint Zubair and said to her, "Do you wish to perform Hajj this year?" She replied, "O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)! I am ill." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "Then perform Hajj and, when assuming Ihram, make a condition." She asked, "What should I say?" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "Say: O Allah! I am present (for Hajj), and my place of release from Ihram is where You restrain me (i.e., where I am prevented from continuing)."

Hazrat Abdullah says that when you perform Hajj, then make a condition.

Hazrat Abu Bakr bin Abdur Rahman bin Harith used to make a condition while performing Umrah.
