ما قالوا ما كان في القرآن (أو؛ أو) فصاحبه مخير فيه وما كان ﴿فمن لم يجد﴾ (فالأول، فالأول)
Regarding the word 'aw' (or) in the Quran: one has a choice, but if not possible, then the first, then the next
Hadith 12862
١٢٨٦٢ - حدثنا حفص عن ليث عن مجاهد عن ابن عباس قال: كل شيء في القرآن: "أو، أو" فهو فيه مخير، وكل شيء فيه: ﴿فَمَنْ لَمْ يَجِدْ﴾ [البقرة: ١٩٦]، فالذي يليه، فإن لم يجد فالذي يليه (١).
Hazrat Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) states that wherever the word "aw" (or) appears in the Holy Qur'an, the servant has a choice, and wherever "fa man lam yajid" (so whoever does not find) appears, then he should act upon what comes after it, and if he does not find that, then he should act upon what comes after that.
Hadith 12863
١٢٨٦٣ - حدثنا أسباط بن محمد عن داود بن أبي هند عن عكرمة مثله.
It is also narrated in the same way from Hazrat Ikrimah.
Hadith 12864
١٢٨٦٤ - حدثنا يزيد بن هارون عن المسعودي عن حماد عن إبراهيم قال: ما كان في القرآن: "أو، أو" فصاحبه مخير.
Ibrahim says that wherever (two things) appear in the Qur'an with the word "or (aw)", the person has the choice between them.
