A Man Giving Ghusl to His Wife

Hazrat Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) states that a man has more right to give his wife the ritual bath (ghusl).

Hasan did not see any harm in a man giving his wife a bath.

Hazrat Abdur Rahman bin Aswad narrates that my mother-in-law or sister-in-law refused to give my wife a bath, so I bathed her myself.

Hazrat Sufyan, Hazrat Amr, Hasan and others state that each of the husband and wife can give ghusl (ritual bath) to the other.

11299 - From (Sufyan) (1) from Amr from Al-Hasan, they said: Each one of them washes his companion.

Hazrat Abu Salamah was asked: If a woman passes away among men and there is no woman present, then what should be done? He replied: Her husband should give her the ritual bath (ghusl).

Imam Shabi states that when a woman passes away, the relationship between her and her husband comes to an end.

Hazrat Sha'bi says that a man cannot give ghusl (ritual bath) to his wife. This is also the opinion of Hazrat Imam Sufyan.

11303 - And this is the opinion (1) of Sufyan.

Hazrat Abdullah bin Yasar narrates that I heard from Hazrat Sulaiman bin Musa, he used to say that a man will give ghusl (ritual bath) to his wife.

Hazrat Masruq narrates that when Hazrat Umar’s wife passed away, he said: When she was alive, I was the one most entitled to her, and today you are more entitled to her.

Hazrat Auf narrates that I was present in the gathering of Qasamah bin Zuhair, and in that gathering there were some elders who had witnessed the era of Hazrat Umar. A man said: A woman from Banu Amir bin Sa’sa’ah was my wife, and he praised her with goodness and said, when the dangerous plague spread, she too was afflicted with the disease of plague. When she was near death, she said, "I am a poor woman, and besides you, there is no one deserving or suitable for me." Then the woman passed away; I bathed her and buried her. Hazrat Auf narrates that none of those elders reproached him for this act, nor did they scold or rebuke him.
