Those who say Jumu'ah is not obligatory for travelers

Hazrat Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said that Jumu'ah is not obligatory upon a traveler.

Hazrat Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) did not use to offer Jumu'ah (Friday prayer) during travel.

Hazrat Mak'hool says that Eid al-Adha, Eid al-Fitr, and Jumu'ah are not obligatory upon a traveler.

Hazrat Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) bin Aqmar narrates that Hazrat Masruq, Hazrat Urwah bin Mughira, and some students of Hazrat Abdullah set out on a journey. On the way, the time for Jumu'ah (Friday prayer) arrived, but they did not perform Jumu'ah. Then the time for Eid al-Fitr came, and they did not perform the Eid prayer either.

Hasan narrates that Abdur Rahman bin Samurah stayed in Kabul for one or two summers; there he did not offer the Friday prayer, rather he used to perform two rak'ahs of prayer.

Hasan narrates that Hazrat Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) stayed in Nishapur for one or two years. There, he would offer two rak'ahs of prayer and then say salam, then offer another two rak'ahs and say salam, and he would not perform the Friday prayer.

Ibrahim states that our elders would sometimes remain on a journey for battle for as long as a year, during which they would shorten their prayers and would not perform the Friday prayer.

Hazrat ‘Ubada bin Nasi narrates that Hazrat ‘Abdul Malik bin Marwan set out for Bayt al-Maqdis with the intention of offering prayer. He camped near the Table of Ibrahim. I met him there with my army. When I encountered him, he said, “We are travelers; Jumu‘ah is not obligatory upon us. You should lead your companions in the Jumu‘ah prayer.”

Hazrat Ibn Masood says that Friday prayer is not obligatory on Muslims during travel and on the days of departure.

Hazrat Sha'bi says that Jumu'ah is not obligatory upon a traveler.

Hazrat Abu Ubaid, the freed slave of Sulaiman bin Abdul Malik, narrates that Hazrat Umar bin Abdul Aziz, during his caliphate, departed from Dabiq and passed by the place of Halab on a Friday. He said to the governor of Halab, "You lead the Friday prayer; we are travelers."
