Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah 39751 — What I have preserved

Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) used to say: the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) never sent Sayyiduna Zayd bin Harithah (may Allah be pleased with him) with any army without appointing him its commander. And if Sayyiduna Zayd had survived him (peace and blessings be upon him), he (peace and blessings be upon him) would (also) have made him his successor.
