Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah 39607 — What I have preserved

Hisham narrates from his father that when the Companions of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) reached the halting place during the expedition of Banu al-Mustaliq, whose people had gone, driven away by them, with chickens left behind in the place, a quarrel broke out between the young boys of the Muhajirun and the Ansar. The boys of the Muhajirun called out: "Ya lal-Muhajirin (O Muhajirun, to our aid)!" and the boys of the Ansar called out: "Ya lal-Ansar (O Ansar, to our aid)!" This news reached Abdullah bin Ubayy bin Salul, and he said: "Indeed, by Allah, if the Ansar did not spend on the Muhajirun, they would leave from around him (peace and blessings be upon him). Indeed, by Allah, if we return to Madinah, the honorable will most certainly expel the abased from it." This reached the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and he (peace and blessings be upon him) ordered the Companions to march, as though he (peace and blessings be upon him) was keeping them occupied. Then during the journey he (peace and blessings be upon him) found a mounted party of Banu Abd al-Ashhal, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said to them: "Do you not know what the hypocrite Abdullah bin Ubayy has said?" They asked: "O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), what has he said?" He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "He has said: 'Indeed, by Allah, if you (Ansar) do not spend on them (the Muhajirun), they will leave Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him). Indeed, by Allah, if we return to Madinah, the honorable will most certainly expel the abased from it.'" They said: "O Messenger of Allah, he spoke the truth. By Allah, you are the honorable one and he is the abased."
