٣٥٧٠٨ - حدثنا وكيع قال: ثنا مسعر عن معن بن عبد الرحمن قال: غزا رجل نحو الشام يقال له شيبان، وله أب شيخ كبير، فقال أبوه في ذلك شعرا: أشيبان ما يدريك أن رب ليلة … (غبقتك) (١) فيها و (الغبوق) (٢) حبيب أأمهلتني حتى إذا ما تركتني … أرى الشخص كالشخصين وهو قريب أشيبان إن بات الجيوش تحدهم … يقاسون أياما بهن خطوب قال: فبلغ ذلك عمر فرده (٣).
It is narrated from Ma'n bin Abd al-Rahman that a man called Shayban went off for jihad towards Syria. His father was an old man, and his father recited verses about him: "O Shayban, how would you know of the many nights in which I gave you the evening drink of milk, and the evening drink is dear? Did you wait until, when you left me, I see one person as two though he stands near? O Shayban, if the armies spend the night being driven on, enduring days filled with calamities." When these verses reached Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him), he called his son back.
