Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah

Hazrat Abu Majliz, in the explanation of the verse of the Holy Qur’an { وَ اِذْ یَرْفَعُ اِبْرَھٖمُ الْقَوَاعِدَ مِنَ الْبَیْتِ وَ اِسْمٰعِیْلُ }, says that when Ibrahim finished the construction of the House of Allah, Hazrat Jibreel came to him and then showed him how to perform Tawaf and made him do it properly, then the Sa’i between Safa and Marwah. Then both of them proceeded towards Aqabah, where Satan appeared before them. Hazrat Jibreel picked up seven pebbles and gave seven pebbles to Ibrahim as well, and he recited Takbeer while throwing the pebbles at Satan and said to Ibrahim, “Throw at him and recite Takbeer.” Then both of them threw pebbles at him, reciting Takbeer with each pebble, until Satan hid (and ran away). Then both of them proceeded towards Jamrah Wusta, where Satan again appeared before them. Hazrat Jibreel picked up seven pebbles and gave seven pebbles to Ibrahim as well. Then both of them threw pebbles at him, reciting Takbeer with each pebble, until Satan hid (and ran away). Then both of them came to Jamrah Quswa, where Satan again appeared before them. Hazrat Jibreel picked up seven pebbles and gave seven pebbles to Ibrahim as well and said to him, “Throw at him and recite Takbeer.” Then both of them threw pebbles at him, reciting Takbeer with each pebble, until Satan hid (and ran away). Then Hazrat Jibreel came with him to Mina and said, “Here people will have their heads shaved.” Then he came with him to Muzdalifah and said, “Here people will combine two prayers.” Then he came with him to Arafat and said, “Have you understood?” He replied, “Yes.” Because of this, the place was named Arafat.
