It is narrated from Sayyidah Umm al-Fadl, the mother of Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with her), that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) stood one night in Makkah during the night and said three times: "O Allah, have I conveyed (the message)?" Then Sayyiduna Umar bin al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) stood up and said: "O Allah, yes. You (peace and blessings be upon him) were eager, you gave sincere counsel, and you strove." When morning came, he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Faith will certainly prevail until it drives disbelief back to its own lands, and the seas will be travelled because of Islam. And a time will come upon the people in which they will learn the Qur'an; they will learn it and recite it, then they will say: 'We have recited and we have learned, so who is better than us?' Is there any fault in those people?" The Companions said: "No, O Messenger of Allah. And who are they?" He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Those are the fuel of the Fire."

It is narrated from Sayyidah Umm al-Fadl (may Allah be pleased with her), the wife of Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him), that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) visited Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) while he was ill, and Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) wished for death. At that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O uncle, do not wish for death. If you are a doer of good, then a longer life will add further good to your good deeds; and if you are one who falls short, then a longer life will give you the chance to make amends for your shortcomings. That is better for you, so do not wish for death."
