Ya'la bin Harmalah (may Allah have mercy on him) said: I came to Makkah three days after Ibn al-Zubayr (may Allah be pleased with them both) had been crucified or killed. His mother, Sayyidah Asma bint Abi Bakr (may Allah be pleased with her), spoke to al-Hajjaj and said: Has the time not yet come for this rider to dismount? He said: (That) hypocrite? Sayyidah Asma (may Allah be pleased with her) said: "No, by Allah! He was not a hypocrite; rather, he fasted much and stood much in worship." He said: Be quiet, you are an old woman whose mind has gone feeble. She said: "My mind has not gone feeble, ever since I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say: 'A liar and a destroyer will emerge in Thaqif.' As for the liar, we have seen him," meaning al-Mukhtar, "and as for the destroyer, it is you." Abu Bakr bin Abi Shaybah added in his narration that al-Hajjaj said in his account: The destroyer of the hypocrites.

Abu al-Muhayyah (may Allah have mercy on him) relates from his father, who said: When al-Hajjaj killed Ibn al-Zubayr (may Allah be pleased with them both), al-Hajjaj went in to Sayyidah Asma bint Abi Bakr (may Allah be pleased with her) and said to her: O mother! The Commander of the Believers has instructed me regarding you; do you have any need? Sayyidah Asma (may Allah be pleased with her) said: I have no need of you, and I am not your mother; rather, I am the mother of the crucified one. Listen, I will tell you a hadith that I heard from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say: "A liar and a destroyer will emerge in Thaqif." As for the liar, we have seen him, meaning al-Mukhtar, and as for the destroyer, it is you. Al-Hajjaj said: (I am) the destroyer of the hypocrites.
