Mubarak bin Fadalah (may Allah have mercy on him) narrates from al-Hasan (al-Basri) (may Allah have mercy on him) that Ubaydullah bin Ziyad came to visit Sayyiduna Ma'qil bin Yasar (may Allah be pleased with him) during the illness in which he died. He asked: How do you find yourself? Ma'qil (may Allah be pleased with him) said: In this condition of mine I have no hope (of recovering), and I will tell you a hadith that I heard from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). He said: What is it? He said: I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say: "There is no one who is made the guardian of a flock (of people) and who dies, on the day he dies, while being treacherous towards them, except that he will not find the fragrance of Paradise - or he said: he will be among the people of Hell." He said: Why did you not tell me this hadith before today? He said: "Were it not for this condition of mine, I would not have told you this hadith."

Mubarak bin Fadalah (may Allah have mercy on him) narrates through al-Hasan (al-Basri) from Sayyiduna Ma'qil bin Yasar al-Muzani (may Allah be pleased with him) that in the time of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) he married his sister to a man. She stayed with him for as long as she stayed, then he gave her one divorce and did not take her back until the waiting period was over. Then the woman came to desire him and he came to desire her. Then he asked for her hand along with the other suitors, and Ma'qil (may Allah be pleased with him) said to him: "O you wretch! I honoured you with her and married her to you, then you divorced her. By Allah! She will never return to you now; this is my final word." Allah Almighty knew this man's need for this woman and this woman's need for this man, so Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, revealed this verse: "And when you divorce women and they complete their waiting period, do not prevent them from marrying their former husbands when they agree between themselves in a fair manner" [Al-Baqarah: 232] - to the end of the verse. When Ma'qil (may Allah be pleased with him) heard this verse, he said: "I hear and obey the command of my Lord." Then he called the man and said: "I will marry her to you and honour you."
