Muhammad bin Sallam al-Jumahi (may Allah have mercy on him) said: Sayyiduna Malik bin Awf bin Sa'd bin Rabi'ah bin Yarbu' bin Wathilah bin Dahman bin Nasr bin Mu'awiyah bin Bakr bin Hawazin (may Allah be pleased with him). Ibn Sallam said: Malik bin Awf al-Nasri was a bold chieftain. The first mention of him, and the feats of war for which he became famous along with his people, was the Day of al-Fijar; his deeds on that day were many. He was the leader of Hawazin when they met the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and he brought along with the people their wealth and their children. Durayd bin al-Simmah opposed him, but he persisted and refused, so the people went along with his decision, yet they did not approve of his opinion; and he was their leader on that day. When he saw the defeat of his companions, he made for the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and he was extremely bold, in order to harm him (peace and blessings be upon him), so it is said. Then Marthad bin Abi Marthad al-Ghanawi (may Allah be pleased with him) came upon him, and he killed him. He urged his horse 'Mahaj' forward, but it would not advance; then he tried again and shouted at it, but it would not advance, so he said:
Advance, Mahaj, this is a grim day; one like me attacks one like you, then wheels back again.
And he strikes a blow, and the wound cries out and snarls; from its belly fresh blood pours forth.
And the spearhead of the spearman breaks inside it, when band after band gathers together.
Then, after accepting Islam, he was present at al-Qadisiyyah and said:
Advance, Mahaj, these are the Asawirah (Persian cavalry); let no extraordinary man frighten you.
Then, defeated at Hunayn, he went to al-Ta'if, and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "If he came to me, I would grant him safety and give him a hundred (camels)." So he came, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) did exactly that with him and sent him to fight the people of al-Ta'if. Sa'd bin Abi Waqqas wrote to Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) asking him for reinforcements, and he wrote back to him: Do you ask me for reinforcements when you are in an army of ten thousand, and with you are Malik bin Awf and Hanzalah bin Rabi'ah? This Hanzalah is the one who used to be called Hanzalah al-Katib. Ibn Sallam said: Someone from his people told me that he said to Umar bin al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him): The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) gave me this wealth to win me over to Islam, and I do not like to take a wage for Islam, so I am returning it. Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: He (peace and blessings be upon him) gave it only when he saw that it was your right.

Muhammad bin Ishaq (may Allah have mercy on him) relates that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said to the delegation of Hawazin at Hunayn, while asking them about Malik bin Awf al-Nasri: "What has Malik done?" They said: He is in al-Ta'if. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Tell Malik that if he comes to me as a Muslim, I will return his family and his wealth to him and give him a hundred camels." When this message reached Malik, he left al-Ta'if and set out towards him (peace and blessings be upon him). Malik feared that if Thaqif learned that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) had said to him what he said, they would detain him. So he ordered his mount to be made ready and had his horse brought from al-Ta'if, then he set out at night, rode on his horse and caught up with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), meeting him (peace and blessings be upon him) at al-Ji'ranah or Makkah. He (peace and blessings be upon him) returned his family and his wealth to him and gave him a hundred camels.
