حَدَّثَنَا زَكَرِيَّا بْنُ يَحْيَى السَّاجِيُّ، وَمُحَمَّدُ بْنُ الْعَبَّاسِ الْأَخْرَمِ الْأَصْبَهَانِيُّ، قَالَا: ثنا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ الْمُثَنَّى، ثنا عَبَّادُ بْنُ مُوسَى السَّعْدِيُّ، ثنا يُونُسُ، عَنِ الْحَسَنِ، عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ مَسْلَمَةَ، قَالَ: مَرَرْتُ فَإِذَا رَسُولُ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ عَلَى الصَّفَا وَاضِعًا خَدَّهُ عَلَى خَدِّ رَجُلٍ، فَذَهَبْتُ فَلَمْ أَلْبَثْ أَنْ نَادَانِي رَسُولُ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ، فَقَالَ: «يَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ مَسْلَمَةَ مَا مَنَعَكَ أَنْ تُسَلِّمَ؟» ، فَقَالَ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ مَسْلَمَةَ: يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ رَأَيْتُكَ فَعَلْتَ بِهَذَا الرَّجُلِ شَيْئًا لَمْ تَفْعَلْهُ بِأَحَدٍ مِنَ النَّاسِ، فَكَرِهْتُ أَنْ أَقْطَعَكَ مِنْ حَدِيثِكَ، فَمَنْ كَانَ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ؟، قَالَ: " كَانَ جِبْرِيلُ صَلَّى الله عَلَيْهِ، وَقَالَ: مَا لِمُحَمَّدِ بْنِ مَسْلَمَةَ لَمْ يُسَلِّمْ؟، أَمَا إِنَّهُ لَوْ سَلَّمَ لَرَدَدْنَا عَلَيْهِ السَّلَامَ "، قَالَ: فَمَا قَالَ لَكَ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ؟، قَالَ: «مَا زَالَ يُوصِينِي بِالْجَارِ حَتَّى كُنْتُ أَنْتَظِرُ أَنْ يَأْمُرَنِي بِتَوْرِيثِهِ»
Sayyiduna Muhammad bin Maslamah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I passed by and saw the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) on al-Safa with a man, placing his cheek upon that man's cheek, so I went away. Not long after, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) called me and said: "O Muhammad bin Maslamah! What prevented you from giving the greeting of peace?" Muhammad bin Maslamah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: O Messenger of Allah! I saw that you were doing something with this man that you have not done with anyone else, so I disliked interrupting your conversation. O Messenger of Allah! Who was he? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "That was Jibril (peace be upon him), and he said: 'What is the matter with Muhammad bin Maslamah that he did not give the greeting? Had he given the greeting, we would have returned his greeting.'" Muhammad bin Maslamah said: O Messenger of Allah! What did he say to you? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "He kept urging me so much regarding the neighbour that I began to think he would command me to make him an heir."
حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللهِ بْنُ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ حَنْبَلٍ، حَدَّثَنِي أَبِي، ثنا زَيْدُ بْنُ الْحُبَابِ، ثنا سَهْلُ بْنُ أَبِي الصَّلْتِ، قَالَ: سَمِعْتُ الْحَسَنَ، يَقُولُ: إِنَّ عَلِيًّا بَعَثَ إِلَى مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ مَسْلَمَةَ فَجِيءَ بِهِ فَقَالَ: مَا خَلَّفَكَ عَنْ هَذَا الْأَمْرِ؟، فَقَالَ: دَفَعَ إِلَيَّ ابْنُ عَمِّكَ، يَعْنِي رَسُولَ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ، سَيْفًا، فَقَالَ: " قَاتِلْ بِهِ مَا قُوتِلَ بِهِ الْعَدُوُّ، فَإِذَا رَأَيْتَ النَّاسَ يَقْتُلُ بَعْضُهُمْ بَعْضًا فَاعْمَدْ بِهِ إِلَى صَخْرَةٍ فَاضْرِبْهُ بِهَا، ثُمَّ الْزَمْ بَيْتَكَ حَتَّى يَأْتِيَكَ مَنِيَّةٌ قَاضِيَةٌ أَوْ يَدٌ خَاطِئَةٌ، قَالَ: خَلُّوا عَنْهُ
Hasan al-Basri (may Allah have mercy on him) said: Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) sent someone to Sayyiduna Muhammad bin Maslamah (may Allah be pleased with him), and he was brought. He asked: What has held you back from this matter? He replied: Your cousin, that is, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), gave me a sword and said: "Fight with it as long as there is fighting against the enemy; but when you see the people killing one another, take it to a rock and strike it against it, then keep to your house until a decreed death comes to you or a sinning hand reaches you." Then Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Leave him alone.
