حَدَّثَنَا إِسْحَاقُ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ الدَّبَرِيُّ، عَنْ عَبْدِ الرَّزَّاقِ، عَنْ يَحْيَى بْنِ الْعَلَاءِ، عَنِ الْحَجَّاجِ بْنِ أَرْطَاةَ، عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عُثْمَانَ، عَنْ سَهْلِ بْنِ أَبِي حَثْمَةَ، قَالَ: مَرَّ نَاسٌ مِنَ الْأَنْصَارِ بِمُحَمَّدِ بْنِ مَسْلَمَةَ، وَهُوَ يُطَالِعُ جَارِيَةً مِنْ بَنِي النَّجَّارِ، فَقَالُوا: سُبْحَانَ اللهِ لَوْ فَعَلَ هَذَا بَعْضُ شَبَابِنَا رَأَيْنَاهُ قَبِيحًا، قَالَ: سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَقُولُ: «إِذَا أَلْقَى اللهُ فِي قَلْبِ رَجُلٍ خِطْبَةَ امْرَأَةٍ فَلَا بَأْسَ أَنْ يَنْظُرَ إِلَيْهَا» هَكَذَا قَالَ يَحْيَى بْنُ الْعَلَاءِ، عَنِ الْحَجَّاجِ، عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عُثْمَانَ "

Sayyiduna Sahl bin Abi Hathmah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Some people of the Ansar passed by Sayyiduna Muhammad bin Maslamah (may Allah be pleased with him) while he was peeping at a girl of Banu al-Najjar, and they said: Subhan Allah (Glory be to Allah)! If one of our young men had done this, we would have considered it shameful. He (that is, Muhammad bin Maslamah (may Allah be pleased with him)) said: I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say: "When Allah puts into a man's heart (the thought of) proposing marriage to a woman, there is no harm in his looking at her." Yahya bin al-Ala' narrated it thus from al-Hajjaj, from Muhammad bin Uthman.

حَدَّثَنَا عُبَيْدُ بْنُ غَنَّامٍ، ثنا أَبُو بَكْرِ بْنُ أَبِي شَيْبَةَ، ثنا حَفْصُ بْنُ غِيَاثٍ، عَنِ الْحَجَّاجِ، عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ سُلَيْمَانَ، عَنْ عَمِّهِ سَهْلِ بْنِ أَبِي حَثْمَةَ، عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ مَسْلَمَةَ، قَالَ: خَطَبْتُ امْرَأَةً فَجَعَلْتُ أَتَخَبَّأُ لَهَا حَتَّى نَظَرْتُ إِلَيْهَا، فَقِيلَ لَهُ: أَتَفْعَلُ هَذَا وَأَنْتَ صَاحِبُ رَسُولِ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ؟، قَالَ: سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَقُولُ: «إِذَا أَلْقَى اللهُ فِي قَلْبِ أَحَدٍ مِنْكُمْ خِطْبَةَ امْرَأَةٍ فَلَا بَأْسَ أَنْ يَنْظُرَ إِلَيْهَا» . هَكَذَا رَوَاهُ حَفْصُ بْنُ غِيَاثٍ وَتَابَعَهُ يَزِيدُ بْنُ هَارُونَ

Sayyiduna Muhammad bin Maslamah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I proposed marriage to a woman, and I began hiding (to see) her until I saw her. It was said to him: Do you do this, when you are a Companion of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)? He said: I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say: "When Allah puts into the heart of any of you (the thought of) proposing marriage to a woman, there is no harm in his looking at her." Hafs bin Ghiyath narrated it thus, and Yazid bin Harun corroborated him.

حَدَّثَنَا الْحُسَيْنُ بْنُ إِسْحَاقَ التُّسْتَرِيُّ، ثنا عُثْمَانُ بْنُ أَبِي شَيْبَةَ، ثنا يَزِيدُ بْنُ هَارُونَ، ثنا الْحَجَّاجُ بْنُ أَرْطَاةَ، عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ سُلَيْمَانَ بْنِ أَبِي حَثْمَةَ، عَنْ سَهْلِ بْنِ أَبِي حَثَمَةَ قَالَ: رَأَيْتُ مُحَمَّدَ بْنَ مَسْلَمَةَ يُطَارِدُ ابْنَةَ الضَّحَّاكِ بِبَصَرِهِ، فَقُلْتُ: سُبْحَانَ اللهِ تَنْظُرُ إِلَيْهَا وَأَنْتَ مِنْ أَصْحَابِ رَسُولِ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ؟، فَقَالَ: إِنِّي سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَقُولُ: «إِذَا أَلْقَى اللهُ فِي قَلْبِ امْرِئٍ خِطْبَةَ امْرَأَةٍ فَلَا بَأْسَ أَنْ يَنْظُرَ إِلَيْهَا» . وَرَوَاهُ يَحْيَى بْنُ سَعِيدٍ، عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ سُلَيْمَانَ بْنِ أَبِي حَثْمَةَ، عَنْ عَمِّهِ سَهْلِ بْنِ أَبِي حَثْمَةَ، كَمَا رَوَاهُ حَفْصُ بْنُ غِيَاثٍ وَيَزِيدُ بْنُ هَارُونَ، عَنِ الْحَجَّاجِ

Sayyiduna Sahl bin Abi Hathmah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I saw Sayyiduna Muhammad bin Maslamah (may Allah be pleased with him) following the daughter of al-Dahhak with his eyes, so I said: Subhan Allah! You look at her when you are one of the Companions of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)? He said: I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say: "When Allah puts into a person's heart (the thought of) proposing marriage to a woman, there is no harm in his looking at her." And Yahya bin Sa'id narrated it from Muhammad bin Sulayman bin Abi Hathmah, from his paternal uncle Sahl bin Abi Hathmah, just as Hafs bin Ghiyath and Yazid bin Harun narrated it from al-Hajjaj.

Hadith 16551

حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللهِ بْنُ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ حَنْبَلٍ، ثنا عَبْدُ اللهِ بْنُ مُوسَى بْنِ شَيْبَةَ الْأَنْصَارِيُّ، ثنا إِبْرَاهِيمُ بْنُ صِرْمَةَ، عَنْ يَحْيَى بْنِ سَعِيدٍ، عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ سُلَيْمَانَ بْنِ أَبِي حَثْمَةَ الْأَنْصَارِيِّ، عَنْ عَمِّهِ سَهْلِ بْنِ أَبِي حَثْمَةَ الْأَنْصَارِيِّ، قَالَ: كُنْتُ جَالِسًا مَعَ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ مَسْلَمَةَ فَمَرَّتْ بِنْتُ الضَّحَّاكِ مِنْ خَلْفِهِ فَجَعَلَ يُطَارِدُهَا بِبَصَرِهِ، فَقُلْتُ: سُبْحَانَ اللهِ تَفْعَلُ هَذَا وَأَنْتَ صَاحِبُ رَسُولِ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ؟، فَقَالَ: إِنِّي سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَقُولُ: «إِذَا أَلْقَى اللهُ خِطْبَةَ امْرَأَةٍ فِي قَلْبِ رَجُلٍ فَلَا بَأْسَ أَنْ يَنْظُرَ إِلَيْهَا»

Sayyiduna Sahl bin Abi Hathmah al-Ansari (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I was sitting with Sayyiduna Muhammad bin Maslamah (may Allah be pleased with him) when the daughter of al-Dahhak passed behind him, and he began following her with his eyes. I said: Subhan Allah! You do this when you are a Companion of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)? He said: I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say: "When Allah puts into a man's heart (the thought of) proposing marriage to a woman, there is no harm in his looking at her."

Hadith 16552

حَدَّثَنَا يُوسُفُ بْنُ يَعْقُوبَ الْقَاضِي، ثنا عَبْدُ اللهِ بْنُ عَبْدِ الْوَهَّابِ الْجُمَحِيُّ، ثنا عَبْدُ الْوَاحِدِ بْنُ زِيَادٍ، ثنا الْحَجَّاجُ بْنُ أَرْطَاةَ، عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ سُلَيْمَانَ بْنِ أَبِي حَثْمَةَ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ، قَالَ: كُنْتُ قَاعِدًا مَعَ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ مَسْلَمَةَ الْأَنْصَارِيِّ فِي دَارِهِ فَرَأَى جَارِيَةً مِنَ الْأَنْصَارِ فَطَرَدَهَا بِبَصَرِهِ فَقُلْتُ لَهُ: يَرْحَمُكَ اللهُ تَنْظُرُ إِلَيْهَا هَذَا النَّظَرَ؟، فَقَالَ: إِنِّي سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَقُولُ: «إِذَا قَذَفَ اللهُ فِي قَلْبِ امْرِئٍ خِطْبَةَ امْرَأَةٍ فَلَا بَأْسَ أَنْ يَنْظُرَ إِلَيْهَا» . «هَكَذَا رَوَاهُ عَبْدُ الْوَاحِدِ بْنُ زِيَادٍ، عَنِ الْحَجَّاجِ، عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ سُلَيْمَانَ بْنِ أَبِي حَثْمَةَ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ»

(The narrator said:) I was sitting with Sayyiduna Muhammad bin Maslamah al-Ansari (may Allah be pleased with him) in his house when he saw a girl of the Ansar and followed her with his eyes. I said to him: May Allah have mercy on you, you look at her like this? He said: I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say: "When Allah puts into a person's heart (the thought of) proposing marriage to a woman, there is no harm in his looking at her." Abd al-Wahid bin Ziyad narrated it thus from al-Hajjaj, from Muhammad bin Sulayman bin Abi Hathmah, from his father.

حَدَّثَنَا بَكْرُ بْنُ سَهْلٍ الدِّمْيَاطِيُّ، ثنا عَبْدُ اللهِ بْنُ يُوسُفَ، ثنا أَبُو مُعَاوِيَةَ، ثنا الْحَجَّاجُ، عَنْ سَهْلِ بْنِ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ أَبِي حَثْمَةَ، عَنْ عَمِّهِ سُلَيْمَانَ بْنِ أَبِي حَثْمَةَ، قَالَ: رَأَيْتُ مُحَمَّدَ بْنَ مَسْلَمَةَ يُطَارِدُ ثُبَيْتَةَ بِنْتَ الضَّحَّاكِ عَلَى بَعْضِ مَنَازِلِ الْمَدِينَةِ بِبَصَرِهِ، فَقُلْتُ لَهُ: تَفْعَلُ هَذَا؟، فَقَالَ: نَعَمْ، سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَقُولُ: «إِذَا أَلْقَى اللهُ فِي قَلْبِ امْرِئٍ خِطْبَةَ امْرَأَةٍ فَلَا بَأْسَ أَنْ يَنْظُرَ إِلَيْهَا» هَكَذَا رَوَاهُ أَبُو مُعَاوِيَةَ، عَنِ الْحَجَّاجِ، عَنْ سَهْلِ بْنِ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ أَبِي حَثْمَةَ، عَنْ عَمِّهِ سُلَيْمَانَ بْنِ أَبِي حَثْمَةَ "

(The narrator said:) I saw Muhammad bin Maslamah (may Allah be pleased with him) following Thubaytah bint al-Dahhak with his eyes in one of the quarters of Madinah, and I said to him: You do this? He said: Yes, I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say: "When Allah puts into a person's heart (the thought of) proposing marriage to a woman, there is no harm in his looking at her." Abu Mu'awiyah narrated it thus from al-Hajjaj, from Sahl bin Muhammad bin Abi Hathmah, from his paternal uncle Sulayman bin Abi Hathmah.

حَدَّثَنَا يُوسُفُ الْقَاضِي، ثنا سُلَيْمَانُ بْنُ حَرْبٍ، ثنا حَمَّادُ بْنُ سَلَمَةَ، عَنِ الْحَجَّاجِ بْنِ أَرْطَأَةَ، عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ سَهْلِ بْنِ حُنَيْفٍ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ، قَالَ: رَأَيْتُ مُحَمَّدَ بْنَ مَسْلَمَةَ الْأَنْصَارِيَّ رَأَى بِنْتَ الضَّحَّاكِ عَلَى جِدَارٍ تَلْعَبُ فَجَعَلَ يَنْظُرُ إِلَيْهَا، فَقِيلَ لَهُ: أَتَنْظُرُ إِلَيْهَا وَأَنْتَ صَاحِبُ رَسُولِ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ؟، قَالَ: إِنِّي سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَقُولُ: «إِذَا قَذَفَ اللهُ فِي قَلْبِ امْرِئٍ خِطْبَةَ امْرَأَةٍ فَلَا بَأْسَ أَنْ يَنْظُرَ إِلَيْهَا» هَكَذَا رَوَاهُ حَمَّادُ بْنُ سَلَمَةَ، وَخَالَفَ النَّاسَ فِيهِ، قَدِ اخْتَلَفَ الرُّوَاةُ عَنِ الْحَجَّاجِ بْنِ أَرْطَاةَ فِي هَذَا الْحَدِيثِ، وَالصَّوَابُ عِنْدِي، وَاللهُ أَعْلَمُ، مَا رَوَاهُ حَفْصُ بْنُ غِيَاثٍ، وَيَزِيدُ بْنُ هَارُونَ، عَنِ الْحَجَّاجِ، عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ سُلَيْمَانَ بْنِ أَبِي حَثْمَةَ، عَنْ عَمِّهِ سَهْلِ بْنِ أَبِي حَثْمَةَ، عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ مَسْلَمَةَ "

Sayyiduna Sahl bin Hunayf (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I saw Sayyiduna Muhammad bin Maslamah al-Ansari (may Allah be pleased with him): he saw the daughter of al-Dahhak playing on a wall and began looking at her. It was said to him: Do you look at her when you are a Companion of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)? He said: I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say: "When Allah puts into a person's heart (the thought of) proposing marriage to a woman, there is no harm in his looking at her."
Hammad bin Salamah narrated it thus, and in it he went against the other narrators. Those who narrate from al-Hajjaj bin Artah differ over this hadith, and in my view — and Allah knows best — the correct version is what Hafs bin Ghiyath and Yazid bin Harun narrated from al-Hajjaj, from Muhammad bin Sulayman bin Abi Hathmah, from his paternal uncle Sahl bin Abi Hathmah, from Muhammad bin Maslamah (may Allah be pleased with him).
