Sayyiduna Uqbah bin Amir (may Allah be pleased with him), speaking on the pulpit, said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) arrived in Madinah while I was tending goats. I left them and set off towards him (peace and blessings be upon him), and said: O Messenger of Allah, take my pledge of allegiance. He (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: "Which tribe are you from?" I told him, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Which pledge do you prefer, the pledge of emigration (hijrah) or the Bedouin pledge?" I said: The pledge of emigration. So he (peace and blessings be upon him) took my pledge. Then he said: "Whoever here is from Ma'add (the tribe), let him stand up." I stood up, and he said: "Sit down." Then he said: "Whoever here is from Ma'add, let him stand up." I stood up again, and he said: "Sit down." Then he said it a third time, and I stood up, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Sit down." I said: O Messenger of Allah, from what lineage are we? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "You are from Quda'ah, then from Malik bin Himyar."
