Sa'd, the freed slave of Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him), said: A man complained to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) about Sayyiduna Safwan bin al-Mu'attal (may Allah be pleased with him) (he, Safwan, used to compose this poetry). He said: "O Messenger of Allah, Safwan has satirised me." He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Leave Safwan alone, for Safwan is rough of tongue but good of heart."

Sa'd, the freed slave of Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him), said: We were with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) (I think he said: on a journey), and we stopped at a place to camp. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said to me: "O Sa'd, go to that goat and milk it." Yet I remembered that there had been no goat in that place. I went there, and there was a goat with udders full of milk. I milked it (I do not remember how many times), then I entrusted it to someone and became busy preparing to move on, and meanwhile the goat went away. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) felt that I was late, and said: "O Sa'd!" I said: "O Messenger of Allah, preparing to move on kept us busy, and the goat went away." He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The goat was taken away by its Owner."

Sa'd (may Allah be pleased with him) said: We were with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) on a journey, and we had some dates with us. Safwan said to me: "Feed me these dates." I said: "These are only a few dates, and I fear that the others will ask for them; when the people stop to camp, you can eat with them." He said: "Feed me, for hunger has destroyed me," and he described the state he had reached. But I refused him, so he hamstrung the she-camel that was carrying the dates. This reached the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Tell Safwan to go away." The narrator said: That night he went around among the Companions of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and could not get through the night. Then he came to Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) and said: "Where shall I go? Shall I go to disbelief?" Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) went to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and told him (peace and blessings be upon him) of this, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Tell Safwan to join us."

Sa'd, the freed slave of Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him), said: I placed dates before the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). The people were eating in front of him (peace and blessings be upon him) and eating them two at a time together, so the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade qiran (eating two dates together).
