حَدَّثَنَا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ الْوَهَّابِ بْنِ نَجْدَةَ الْحَوْطِيُّ، ثنا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ خَالِدٍ الْوَهْبِيُّ، ثنا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ إِسْحَاقَ، عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ إِبْرَاهِيمَ بْنِ الْحَارِثِ التَّيْمِيِّ، عَنْ أَبِي سَلَمَةَ بْنِ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ، عَنْ زَيْدِ بْنِ خَالِدٍ الْجُهَنِيِّ، عَنِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ: «لَوْلَا أَنْ أَشُقَّ عَلَى أُمَّتِي لَأَمَرْتُهُمْ بِالسِّوَاكِ عِنْدَ كُلِّ صَلَاةٍ»
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Zayd bin Khalid al-Juhani (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Were it not that I would make things difficult for my Ummah, I would have commanded them to use the tooth-stick (siwak) at every prayer."
حَدَّثَنَا عُبَيْدُ بْنُ غَنَّامٍ، ثنا أَبُو بَكْرِ بْنُ أَبِي شَيْبَةَ، ثنا يَعْلَى بْنُ عُبَيْدٍ، ح وَحَدَّثَنَا الْحُسَيْنُ بْنُ إِسْحَاقَ التُّسْتَرِيُّ، ثنا عُثْمَانُ بْنُ أَبِي شَيْبَةَ، ثنا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ فُضَيْلٍ، وَيَعْلَى بْنُ عُبَيْدٍ، عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ إِسْحَاقَ، عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ إِبْرَاهِيمَ بْنِ الْحَارِثِ، عَنْ أَبِي سَلَمَةَ بْنِ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ، عَنْ زَيْدِ بْنِ خَالِدٍ، قَالَ: قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ لَوْلَا: «لَوْلَا أَنْ أَشُقَّ عَلَى أُمَّتِي لَأَمَرْتُهُمْ بِالسِّوَاكِ عِنْدَ كُلِّ صَلَاةٍ» فَكَانَ زَيْدٌ يَضَعُ السِّوَاكَ مِنْهُ مَوْضِعَ الْقَلَمِ مِنْ أُذُنِ الْكَاتِبِ، كُلَّمَا قَامَ إِلَى الصَّلَاةِ اسْتَاكَ "
Sayyiduna Zayd bin Khalid (may Allah be pleased with him) said that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Were it not that it would be hard on my Ummah, I would have commanded them to use the siwak (tooth-stick) at every prayer." So Sayyiduna Zayd (may Allah be pleased with him) used to keep the siwak on his ear in the same place where a scribe keeps his pen, and whenever he stood up for prayer he would use the siwak.
