Abdul Rahman bin Abi Layla narrates: I prayed the funeral prayer behind Sayyiduna Zayd bin Arqam (may Allah be pleased with him) over a deceased, and he said four takbirs; then I prayed behind him over another, and he said five takbirs. I asked him about it, and he said: "The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) also used to say the takbirs in this way."

Sayyiduna Zayd bin Arqam (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: We said: "O Messenger of Allah! Every people has followers, and we have followed you, so supplicate to Allah that our followers be from among us." So he (peace and blessings be upon him) supplicated. Amr bin Murrah says: I conveyed this to Ibn Abi Layla, and he said: "Zayd bin Arqam said exactly this."

Abdul Rahman bin Abi Layla narrates: Whenever we said to Sayyiduna Zayd bin Arqam (may Allah be pleased with him), "Narrate hadith to us," he would say: "We have grown old and have forgotten, and narrating hadith from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) is a weighty responsibility."

Sayyiduna Zayd bin Arqam (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: When Ibn Ubayy said what he said, I came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and informed him (peace and blessings be upon him). Then he (Ibn Ubayy) came and swore that he had not said it. So some people began saying: "This one (Zayd) brought a lie to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)." Eventually I sat in my house, fearing that when people saw me they would say: "This is the one who lies." Until Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, revealed this verse: "They are the ones who say: 'Do not spend on those who are with the Messenger of Allah until they disperse.' And to Allah belong the treasures of the heavens and the earth, but the hypocrites do not understand." [Al-Munafiqun: 7].
