Abu al-Najashi Ata' bin Suhayb (may Allah have mercy on him), the freed slave of Sayyiduna Rafi' bin Khadij (may Allah be pleased with him), said: I remained in the company of Sayyiduna Rafi' bin Khadij (may Allah be pleased with him) for six years, and he narrated to me from his paternal uncle Zuhayr bin Rafi' (may Allah be pleased with him) that he met him one day and said to him: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) has forbidden us something that was beneficial to us. Sayyiduna Rafi' (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I said: Whatever the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) has said is the truth. He said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Tell me about your farmlands - what do you do with them?" We said: We rent them out for a quarter of the produce, or for some wasqs of dates and barley. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Do not do that. Cultivate them yourselves, or have someone else cultivate them, or leave them unused."

Sayyiduna Rafi' bin Khadij (may Allah be pleased with him) said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) came to Madinah while the people were doing ta'bir (pollination) of the palm trees. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "What are you doing?" They said: This is what we used to do. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "If you did not do it, it would be better." So they gave it up, and the dates came out poor. That was mentioned to him (peace and blessings be upon him), and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "I am only a human being. So when I command you with something concerning your religion, adopt it; and when I command you with something concerning your worldly affairs, then remember that I am only a human being."
