It is narrated about Sayyiduna Abu Ayyub (may Allah be pleased with him) that he used to instruct people to wipe over leather socks (khuffs) but would himself wash his feet. He was asked about this, and he said: "What a poor share that would be for me, if its benefit were yours and its sin were upon me! I saw the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) wiping over the leather socks and instructing people to do so, but ablution (wudu) has been made dear to me."

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Ayyub (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) stayed with him; the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) stayed on the lower floor and Abu Ayyub (may Allah be pleased with him) on the upper floor. One night Abu Ayyub (may Allah be pleased with him) woke up and said: Are we to walk about above the head of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)? So he went down to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The lower floor is easier for us." The narrator says: And whenever Abu Ayyub (may Allah be pleased with him) sent food to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), he would ask about the places where his (peace and blessings be upon him) fingers had left their marks. Once Abu Ayyub (may Allah be pleased with him) sent him food containing garlic, and he did not find in it the mark of the fingers of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), so he said to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): Is it forbidden? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "No, but I dislike it." So he said: I dislike what you have disliked, or: what you dislike. And the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to be visited (by the angel).

Aflah, the freed slave of Abu Ayyub (may Allah have mercy on him), narrates that he passed by Sayyiduna Zayd bin Thabit and Sayyiduna Abu Ayyub (may Allah be pleased with them both) while the two of them were sitting by Masjid al-Jana'iz. One of them said to his companion: Do you remember the hadith that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) narrated to us in this very gathering in which we are sitting? He said: Yes, about Madinah. I heard him (peace and blessings be upon him) saying that a time will come upon people in which regions of the earth will be conquered, and some men will go out to them and find ease, a comfortable life and food there. Then they will pass by their brothers who have come for Hajj or Umrah and say to them: What keeps you in the hardship of living and severe hunger? The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "So some will go and some will stay" (he (peace and blessings be upon him) repeated this several times) "and Madinah is better for them. No one stays firmly in it and bears patiently its hardship and severity until he dies, except that I will be a witness or an intercessor for him on the Day of Resurrection."

Sayyiduna Abu Ayyub al-Ansari (may Allah be pleased with him) says: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) came to Madinah and stayed with Abu Ayyub. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was lodged on the lower floor, and Abu Ayyub stayed on the upper floor. When evening came and they settled in for the night, Abu Ayyub began to think that he was on the roof of the house of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) with him below, and that he was between him and the revelation. So Abu Ayyub could not sleep, fearing that dust might fall on him and that he would move and cause him discomfort. When morning came, he went early to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: O Messenger of Allah! Neither I nor Umm Ayyub closed our eyes all night. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O Abu Ayyub! What was the reason for that?" He said: I remembered that I am on the roof of the house and you are below me; when I move, dust scatters on you, and my moving causes you discomfort, while I am between you and the revelation. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O Abu Ayyub! Do not do that. Shall I not teach you some words which, if you say them ten times in the morning and ten times in the evening, you will be given ten good deeds for them, ten of your sins will be wiped away, you will be raised ten degrees, and on the Day of Resurrection they will be for you equal to freeing ten slaves? Say: 'La ilaha illallah, lahul-mulku wa lahul-hamdu, la sharika lah' (There is no god but Allah; His is the dominion and His is the praise; He has no partner)."
