Abdullah bin Hunayn (may Allah have mercy on him) narrates that Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) and Miswar bin Makhramah (may Allah be pleased with him) differed at al-Abwa'. Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: The muhrim (one in the state of ihram) may wash his head. And Miswar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: The muhrim does not wash his head. So Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) sent me to Abu Ayyub al-Ansari (may Allah be pleased with him). I found him bathing between the two posts of a well, screening himself with a cloth. I greeted him with salam, and he asked: "Who is this?" I said: I am Abdullah bin Hunayn; Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) has sent me to you to ask you: How did the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) wash his head while he was in the state of ihram? The narrator says: So Abu Ayyub (may Allah be pleased with him) put his hand on the cloth and lowered it, then said to a man who was pouring water over him: Pour. So he poured water over his head, then he rubbed his head with both his hands, taking them forward and bringing them back, then he said: This is how I saw the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) doing it.

Abdullah bin Hunayn (may Allah have mercy on him) says: Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) and Miswar bin Makhramah (may Allah be pleased with him) differed about the muhrim washing his head, so they sent me to Abu Ayyub al-Ansari (may Allah be pleased with him). I came to him while he was bathing between the two posts of a well. When he saw me, he drew the cloth to himself. I said: Your nephew Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) has sent me to you to ask you: How did you see the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) pouring water over his head while he was in the state of ihram? So he poured water over his head and said: Like this; and he placed his hands on his head and moved them from front to back three times.

Ibrahim bin Abdullah bin Hunayn (may Allah have mercy on him) narrates that Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) and Miswar bin Makhramah (may Allah be pleased with him) differed over whether the muhrim may wash his head with water when not in a state of major impurity (janabah). So the two of them sent me to Abu Ayyub (may Allah be pleased with him), who was at one of the watering places of Makkah, to ask him about this matter. I came to him and found Abu Ayyub (may Allah be pleased with him) washing his head between the two posts of a well, screening himself with a cloth. I asked him, and he lowered the cloth with his hand until his head appeared; then he rubbed his head and hair with both his hands, moving his hands forward through his hair and bringing them back, then he said: This is how I saw the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) bathing while he was in the state of ihram. Ibrahim (may Allah have mercy on him) says: Then I went back to them and told them.

Abdullah bin Hunayn (may Allah have mercy on him) says: I was with Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) and Miswar bin Makhramah (may Allah be pleased with him) at al-Abwa'. We kept talking until the two of them mentioned the muhrim washing his head. Miswar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: No; and Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: Indeed he may. So Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) sent me to Abu Ayyub (may Allah be pleased with him) (with this message): Your nephew Abdullah bin Abbas sends you his greetings of salam and asks you how the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) used to bathe and wash his head when he was in the state of ihram. I found him bathing between the two posts of a well, screening himself with a cloth. When I introduced myself and asked him the question, he drew the cloth to himself until his face and head became visible to me, and a man was standing at the well pouring water over him. Then Abu Ayyub (may Allah be pleased with him) passed both his hands over his head, moving them from front to back. Then Miswar (may Allah be pleased with him) said to Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both): I will never argue with you again. (Ibn Jurayj did not narrate it as marfu' (attributed to the Prophet).)
