Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) said: When the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) conquered Khaybar, Sayyiduna al-Hajjaj bin Ilat (may Allah be pleased with him) said: O Messenger of Allah, I have some wealth in Makkah and I also have family there, and I want to go to them. So do I have permission, if I say something about you or say anything (that I will not be held to account for it)? "The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) gave him permission to say whatever he wished." The narrator said: When he reached Makkah, he went to his wife and said: Gather whatever you have, for I want to buy some of the spoils of Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) and his companions, because their lives and wealth have been made lawful. This news spread in Makkah, so the Muslims were dejected and the polytheists displayed joy and delight. The narrator said: The news reached Sayyiduna al-Abbas bin Abd al-Muttalib (may Allah be pleased with him), and he was stunned and was unable to stand. Then he sent a slave boy to al-Hajjaj bin Ilat: Woe to you! What news have you brought? And what are you saying? Nothing can be better than what Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, promised. The narrator said: Al-Hajjaj said: Convey my greetings of peace to Abu al-Fadl, and tell him to give me privacy in one of his houses so that I may come to him, for the news is such as will please him. The narrator said: So his slave boy came, and when he reached the door he said: Glad tidings, O Abu al-Fadl! The narrator said: Al-Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) leapt up with joy until he kissed him between his eyes, and he told him what al-Hajjaj had said, and he then freed him. The narrator said: Then al-Hajjaj came to him and told him that "The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) has conquered Khaybar and taken their wealth as spoils, and the shares of Allah have been apportioned in their wealth; and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) has chosen Safiyyah bint Huyayy (may Allah be pleased with her) for himself and taken her for himself, and he gave her the choice between his freeing her and making her his wife, or her joining her family; and she chose that he (peace and blessings be upon him) free her and make her his wife." But I have come here for my wealth; I wanted to gather it and take it away. "So I sought permission from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and he (peace and blessings be upon him) permitted me to say whatever I wished. So keep this hidden concerning me for three days, then say whatever you see fit." The narrator said: So his wife gathered whatever jewellery and goods she had and gave them to him, and then he set off with them. When three days had passed, al-Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) came to the wife of al-Hajjaj and asked: What has your husband done? She told him that he had left on such-and-such a day, and said: May Allah not grieve you, O Abu al-Fadl! The news that reached you has caused us great distress. He said: Yes, Allah will not grieve me; by the grace of Allah, nothing has happened except what we love. "Allah has granted His Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) victory over Khaybar, and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) has chosen Safiyyah for himself." So if you need your husband, go and join him. She said: By Allah, I think you are telling the truth. He said: By Allah, I am telling the truth, and the matter is as I have told you. The narrator said: Then he went on until he reached the gatherings of Quraysh, and whenever he passed by them they would say: May nothing but good befall you, O Abu al-Fadl! He said: By the grace of Allah, nothing but good has befallen me. Al-Hajjaj bin Ilat has told me that "Allah has granted His Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) victory over Khaybar, the shares of Allah have been apportioned, and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) has chosen Safiyyah for himself." And he asked me to keep this hidden for three days; he came only to take his wealth that was here, and then to leave with it. So Allah turned the grief that had been upon the Muslims back upon the polytheists. And those Muslims who had sat in their houses in grief came out and came to al-Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him), and he told them this news. The Muslims were delighted, and Allah turned the grief, anger and sorrow that had been upon the Muslims back upon the polytheists.
