Abd al-Rahman bin Azhar al-Zuhri (may Allah have mercy on him) narrates from his father, Sayyiduna Azhar (may Allah be pleased with him), that a drunkard was brought to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) while he was at Khaybar. He (peace and blessings be upon him) threw dust in his face, then ordered his Companions, and they beat him with their sandals and with whatever was in their hands, until he (peace and blessings be upon him) said to them: "Lift him up." So they lifted him up. Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) passed away and this remained his (peace and blessings be upon him) practice. Then Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) had forty lashes given for wine, then Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) had forty given at the beginning of his caliphate, and eighty lashes at the end of his caliphate, then Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) applied the prescribed punishment of forty, then Sayyiduna Mu'awiyah (may Allah be pleased with him) eighty.
