Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) said: The two sons of Mulaykah came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: O Messenger of Allah, our mother used to honour her husband, was kind to her children, and also took care of guests, but in the time of Ignorance (Jahiliyyah) she had buried (a daughter) alive. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Your mother is in the Fire." Hearing this, the two of them turned their backs and left, with signs of grief clearly visible on their faces. He (peace and blessings be upon him) had them called back, and they returned (in the hope that something new might have happened) with signs of joy on their faces. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "My mother is also with your mother (that is, she too is in Hell)."
At this a man from the hypocrites said: What has it profited him to speak about his mother, when we follow in his footsteps? Then a man from the Ansar - and I have never seen a man who asked more questions than him - said: O Messenger of Allah, has your Lord made any promise concerning her or concerning them both (the two mothers)? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Do you think that something (of the kind) has happened?" (Then) he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "I have not asked my Lord (for anything in intercession for my mother), and indeed on the Day of Resurrection I will stand in the Praised Station (al-Maqam al-Mahmud)." The Ansari said: O Messenger of Allah, what is that Praised Station? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "That will be when you are brought barefoot and naked, and the first to be clothed will be Ibrahim (peace be upon him). He will say: Clothe my Khalil (intimate friend). So two white garments will be brought and he will be clothed in them, then he will sit facing the Throne. Then my clothing will be brought and I will put it on, then I will stand at his right side in a station where no one other than me will stand; the first and the last will all envy me for it. And my river, al-Kawthar, will be opened to the Pond."
At this a man from the hypocrites said: Whatever (river) flows, flows only over mud or pebbles. (The Ansari) said: O Messenger of Allah, what will its mud and pebbles be? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Its mud will be musk and its pebbles will be pearls." The hypocrite said: I have never heard anything like today! Any water that flows over mud or pebbles always has some vegetation. The Ansari said: O Messenger of Allah, will it have any vegetation? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Yes, branches of gold." The hypocrite said: I have never heard anything like today; no branch grows without leaves and fruit. The Ansari said: O Messenger of Allah, will it have any fruit? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Yes, jewels of every colour, and its water will be whiter than milk and sweeter than honey. Whoever drinks a single draught from it will never be thirsty, and whoever is deprived of it will never have his thirst quenched."
(The narrator says:) This hadith was also narrated by al-Sa'iq bin Hazn from Ali bin al-Hakam, but he differed from Sa'id bin Zayd in its chain.
